  1. Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight champion, whose reign lasted from 1908 to 1915, was also the first African American pop culture icon. He was photographed more than any other black man of his day and, indeed, more than most white men. He was written about more as well. Blacks were subjected to a harsh, abject system of racial segregation and second-class citizenship that was often backed up by lynching and white-instigated race riots where scores of blacks were killed.

  2. He was wearing gold grills a 100 years before hip hop artists and rappers did, was into interracial relationships 100 years before it was acceptable and drove fast cars and his life ended the way he lived FAST!!! A Man well ahead of his time, top ten heavyweight ever

  3. JJ was his own man. He never listened to black white any other fella. He did what he wanted. Don't you get it. Why would he not choose his opponents? What do you think he was? A slave to the modern day boxing punter?

  4. @5:48 😂😅 Funniest shit i ever heard….like who the f*** just Wrestles with their new step dad 😂🤷‍♂️😅 oh i know who Baby-Boy but he got Choked Out tho LOL🤣

  5. Jack chased Tommy Burns for a considerable length of time if i remember correctly. It was only when Tommy was offered such a large sum of cash that he couldn't turn it down because it would be an admission of inferiority. Only then was this fight possible.

  6. I seriously doubt that Jack Johnson died in a car crash from driving wreck less. How do you know that he wasn't being chased and shot at? He was denied service at a racist restaurant and things probably escalated to him being chased by someone armed.

  7. He didn't only marry white women. Jack Johnson's first wife was black. The best documentary about Jack Johnson is called Unforgiveable Blackness. This documentary uses it.

  8. You're the only one who ever talked about the battle royals being fights between young black men 4 the entertainment of white people. Everyone else leaves that part out. I would also like to say Muhammad Ali had it easy compared to Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson could have been murdered in the street. Muhammad Ali was protected and used the race card under the banner of the nation of Islam in America. They are nothing alike. Jack Johnson was a kind man, a smart man. Ali aint got nothing on jack. And you also should realize Jack Johnson also drew the color line for other black fighters.
