All Time Power Rankings #27: Buffalo Sabres

All Time Power Rankings #27: Buffalo Sabres

Welcome back all right so I have something to explain at the start of this one so the average here the number of ons had in there has been the average year by year um I like the average with all the power rankings included and just

Average it out so it does end up being a little little different so for Buffalo for instance the numberers 23.0 five it was like 23.4 when you averaged out the years and it means that certain teams may end up in the wrong order because of

Where they are in the sheet so up until now might be like hey this this team had a different number uh the number that I’m going by here Ottawa 25.15 Chicago 2428 these are the averages including all the power rankings Arizona 24.1 Anaheim and Detroit both

23.976024 that I like is going week by week by week by week for the hundreds of weeks I’ve been doing this so again much appreciation to her much appreciation to uh Max for sending all this information in so that we can turn it into these these beautiful graphs and all this so

You’ll see with Buffalo’s graph there’s some heartbeats there uh but the overall picture in Buffalo is not great and most of those heartbeats you see where it goes way up and then way down that’s going to be at the start of the year a lot of the time right so the last made

The playoffs in 2011 and this was supposed to be the year Buffalo got better I’d expect Buffalo was going to get better it has not happened uh they have not achieved what they did in the second half of last season second half of last season Buffalo honestly was

Pretty darn good so they’re 27th overall in the power rankings again going week by week by week all the weeks I’ve been doing them since 2017 2018 their top Skinner or top top scorer over that time that time has been Skinner uh 392 games 146 goals 13 two assists for 278 points

Uh the top goalie Lena Sark yeah that one hurts doesn’t it 42 36 and 11 record with 912 safe percentage just imagine a world where olark stays in Buffalo and you have Levi as the backup that might be the perfect or Lucan and as the backup and Levis in the AHL getting that

Experience so he can come up and be the replacement uh hindsight’s 2020 uh olark goes to Boston has a pretty good time of it and and buffalo has been seeking that goenda is going to be the guy I also think Lucan and is going to have an

Excellent career so yeah we’ll see how things turn out for Buffalo going forward so this year their average is 26.13.6 on average and they were seventh once so for Buffalo uh they have had time in the top row they have had eight weeks in the top row 19 weeks in the

Second row 53 weeks in the the third row 77 weeks in the bottom row so again are we surprised that they have a lot of time at the bottom row no cuz they’re 27th overall on average uh so when we look at this team and where they’re at

The points percentage over this time 453 that’s 28th in the NHL over that time uh their power rankings as of January 20th they were 27th so consistency from Buffalo consistency’s there they’re 27th and they number 27 on this playlist uh so the really it’s about finishing the rebuild which is easier said than

Done Kevin Adams has a a pretty tall task here you have a team that looks okay I think they need depth on the blue line and I think they need experience in net there’s a reason why before hok signed that extension in Winnipeg there’s a lot of hey could heluk go to

Buffalo talk because it would be perfect if heluk was in Buffalo I I think we’d be looking at a much better record for this team and a much better Outlook the only other issue with that is they’re not scoring goals like they did last year either so hu and have to be winning

A lot of those two to1 and 3 to2 but he’s a goenda and he’s been very good over the last month in fact he’s been excellent over the last month but haluk of course is you know at or near vzna level most of the time so for Buffalo uh really I

Think adding that experience would help them a lot the depth on the blue line I think is necessary I wanted to put down like more forwards but when I think about it they’re forward groups pretty darn good it’s just a matter of having that mesh the one question mark being so

How how long is Don Granado behind the bench does he stay till the end of the season do you keep him in next season do they make a change behind the bench before that and then you can ask the question too about Kevin Adams and the

Rebuild this is a team though that did go into the rebuild after not getting out of their last rebuild right so you you draft eel you develop eel you get him you know he’s really really good then he has his his his disc problems and he wants to do the disc replacement

You’re like no he goes to Vegas he gets the surgery and while they did did very well in that trade the reality is that they’re they’re still in this Perpetual rebuild they’ve been in since 2011 it looks like they’re uh their playoff drought’s going to continue for another

Year it’s the longest in the history of the National Hockey League and then the question becomes one of where does it end now for Buffalo fans I don’t want to leave this on that sour note because I think that’s kind of just it’s a sour note I don’t like leaving it there uh

The Vancouver Canucks were in not a dissimilar position in this offseason I thought they weren’t going to go very far maybe they’ll push towards a playoff spot but probably not that great and this year they’ve just taken my my expectations and exceeded them tremendously and exceeded everybody’s expectations really so maybe Buffalo can

Do that with the Right Moves In the off season and uh how this team could look going into next season we’ll see but it definitely feels like this year’s going to be another one where they finish outside the playoffs and and could very well be 27th yet again but let me know

Your thoughts in the comments section below how do you fix Buffalo there’s there’s the question how do you fix Buffalo don’t forget to hit like And subscribe in the event that you haven’t done that yet thank you guys so much for all your support as always I will talk to you again soon

Well, Buffalo has been consistent, just not in the way their fans would like. It feels like this misery has to end soon.

  4. I'm a Sabres fan, and this is fair enough. We just miss that bright promise from last year when we were in the top row of Shannon's board. Never good when the same cast of characters goes backward after having more experience.

  5. Max here – Thanks again for the thanks and apologies for the averages mix-up. It wasn't until last night I realized there was the small but sometimes significant difference in the "by season" and "by week" values I had sent you.

  6. As soon as Toronto wins their next Cup, Vancouver and Buffalo are then tied for the longest Stanley Cup drought (0 – '1970') as well.

  7. I think Buffalo might be a good trade partner for the Capitals. They could probably use Shepard or Stevenson.

The Capitals probably can't trade Kuemper. They could trade Lindgren, but it'd make sense to trade him to a team that expects to make the playoffs this year (maybe Carolina or New Jersey). But most likely the Capitals should trade one of their two NHL ready goalies at Hersey, and those guys would both be a good fit for Buffalo.

Goaltending is a big part of Buffalo's problem, although it's not as big of a problem as it is for Carolina and New Jersey. I have to admit that before the season started, I was influenced by Buffalo's strong second half last season, and I thought that this would be the season when they break their playoff drought. It appears that I was wrong about that.

I would love to see Shepard and Stevenson both get their chances in the NHL, and Buffalo is close enough to the playoffs that a hot streak (it doesn't need to be a 16 game win streak) could put them into a wildcard spot. I could see Shepard or Stevenson being good enough to do that for Buffalo. But I can't really see Buffalo doing that without a change in goaltenders. Levi is no Skinner.

  8. I commend you on your 40th Anniversary sweater. Born and raised in Buffalo, now an expat, but its the only Sabres sweater I own. I just loved the nod to the old AHL Buffalo team with the "Pepsi logo." Couldn't not buy it.
    Sabres needs:
-Veteran forwards. They need to trade some of their youth/draft capital for veterans that can calm the team down after bad starts and definitely teach them what a bodycheck is. I assume Okposso is done after this year. Girgensons probably would like a change of scenery.
-A veteran partner for Owen Power. Dude looks like a rudderless ship out there. They're going to ruin him is he doesn't get a mentor.
-The entire team needs to learn how to play defense. Ullmark looks good now because he went to a better defensive team. I think if UPL can play consistently, he is your "older goalie" for Devon Levi. Im not certain we need a veteran goalie, we just need to play better defensively in front of whoever we have in net.
-Power play needs fixin. The same guy that ran it last year is running it this year. I don't know what changed, but we went from one of the best PP's to one of the worst.

  9. I'm just glad that Buffalo trading Eichel made them a better team. Playoff bound for sure…….in 2033 😂😂😂😂

  10. Honestly, goaltending has been the least of Buffalo's problems this season. The defense has left the goalies out to dry most nights, and the forwards are not scoring enough. The team as a whole is just too inexperienced and are simply too easy to play against. They need to get mentally tougher so they can play a tougher brand of hockey. They play way too timidly most nights. And I think it might take a new voice behind the bench to bring that toughness out of them.

  11. Kevyn Adams blew it when he refused to making any meaningful full moves this offseason then over paid guys like Jost, Bryson and others who are now bouncing between the NHL and AHL.

  12. This series of videos is fantastic! Max, Yvonne, and Shannon have nailed it here. Especially, recapping the recent efforts of these teams in rebuild-mode….it shows the effort and is compelling content about squads that, day-in-day-out aren't always compelling.
