John Tavares slash and broken stick NHL officiating controversy

Another contentious moment unfolded in the Toronto Maple Leafs-Winnipeg Jets game, adding to the ongoing discussion about controversial officiating. While the goalie interference call leading to the disallowed goal has been a frequent topic of debate, another incident involving Dylan Samberg and John Tavares drew attention. In front of the net, Samberg slashed Tavares’s stick twice, with the referee observing the play but making no call. Shortly after, Samberg slashed Tavares’s stick once again. Tavares, in response, looked at the referee and leaned on his stick, causing it to break. It was only at this point that the referee raised his right hand and made the call, imposing a two-minute penalty on Samberg for slashing. #nhl #hockey #nhldiscussion #nhlnews #highlights #torontomapleleafshighlights

  1. Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek discussed this incident on their pod today. I hadn't seen the video until now. Seems to be a bad call.

  2. It’s a slash or it’s not. Nothing in the rule book about a broken stick making a difference. If it wasn’t a penalty before Tavares breaks his stick, it’s not after

  3. i think the ref saw the slashes and was like ok no harm done till John shows that the stick is fucked so now the ref is like ok yeah thats a penalty

  4. Tavares clearly felt the stick was broken before he bent on it as he slides his hands up and down the stick. It was a weird call, but a good call.
