Leafs’ Goal Disallowed vs. Jets for Interference

January 27, 2024: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Tyler Bertuzzi saw his first period goal against the Winnipeg Jets disallowed due to goaltender interference.  Not sure we agree with the Situation Room’s decision on this one…

  1. The contact (initiated by Winnipeg's D pushing Nylander into the goalie), didn't even affect Hellybuck's ability to make the save. He was out of position because of the crazy bounce off Tavares' leg. So there's two reasons it should have been a good goal. I don't understand how they can continuously make these calls with video replay.

  2. So any time there is a goal threat the defender just needs to cross check the attacker into the goalie?

  3. Worst call in recent history. It shouldn't matter what the call on the ice is after seeing it wasn't goalie interference

  4. He goes limp and makes it look likes he's not fighting for position. Good call. He just goes to stand there and goes into limp mode

  5. Referees Cody Beach and Pierre Lambert are a joke . Please tell me they will not be doing any playoff games , Unless they are in someone's backyard . Tell me an NHL defenseman who's not going to drive any opponent who comes close to the crease into his goalie after seeing this redictious call . Stephen Walkom, if you approved these 2 jokers for anything above AHL, you should fired . To add insult to injury, the goal scorers wife just gave birth . In the NHL, new dads always give an extra effort to score in these circumstances . Plus, Bert 's scoring has been down this year he needed one . Over and over, we hear the referees should not be involved in the outcome on the scoreboard . Canadians know this game better than anyone on the planet . Never mind the BS intentional interference or accidental interference. Accept minor leaque referee Cody Beach . Cody, you just disallowed a perfectly good goal and should appolizgize to the player and the coach and team . Just like Bettman makes them do when they screw up .

  6. 100% chance there will be 32 NHL GM's that look at this call and say that it's the wrong call by the official on the ice, it's a completely unacceptable decision from the replay room, and how do we move forward now without this decision having extremely negative effects on our game?. Yes this will be all 32 GM's including Cheveldayoff.
Yes it's a terrible decision but it is one that forces the conversation to take place within the league ranks over the next couple weeks, so we can hope that they find ways to do better.
This excuse of "not enough to overturn the call on the ice is unacceptable". It's cut and dried. Do the rules negate this goal? No! They in fact confirm that the official got it wrong.
Pushed into the goalie not once but twice.
This approach to replays and the need to overturn the call on the ice is nonsense. If it goes to replay then the onus for the correct call lands directly on the video evidence and should be considered like there is no call on the ice and only revert back if the evidence simply doesn't exist. This was not a case of missing evidence but simply choosing to accept the incorrect call on the ice. DO BETTER NHL!

  7. Cody Beach referee game #24 of career – AHL ref on NHL contract. Former player – role – enforcer… Good call guy… sucked as a player, sucks as a ref.

  8. You can debate how soft Nylander is, and I’ll listen to that argument. However, that has no bearing on this play. Even after being pushed twice, he immediately gets of out the blue paint. The goalie has ample time to reset, push to his right to follow the puck, the puck appears to deflect off Tavares’ skate and onto Bertuzzi’s stick.

The way I judge this is take Nylander out of the equation. Even if he isn’t in front of the net, this play still happens exactly as it did.
