Lol, fleeced? You mean Kent Hughes just got fleeced. Monahan gonna be playing top 6 scoring at nearly a point per game for a 25-28 pick? Did you know Halleybuck is the best goalie in the league and they could easily ride him to the finals with a solid top 6 and there big physical defenseman? Habs got fleeced and even more so if Jets manage to resign Monahan.
The habs got fleeced, what is a late first rounder worth? In a weak ass draft at that. You’d have to be touched to believe this is a win for the habs , even Hugues isn’t happy hab out this trade as he was rushed by fear of monahan getting injured.
Now the habs center line looks like this , Suzuki, Evans , Pezzetta and Stephen’s . This will put a lot of pressure on caufield , Slafkovsky and Suzuki and affect caufield and Slafkovsky development. And for what? A “maybe”?

I wouldnt say the Jets got "fleeced" on this deal. The general speculation was that the Habs could get a 1st for Monahan or at worse, a second or some other combination. Contending teams rarely pick up rentals and trade away current roster players. Its almost always for picks and or Junior prospects. I think the Jets will love Monahan on the 2nd line with Perfetti and solidify their offence. Do they still go out and get a depth defenceman? Probably.

Should be noted that the Habs have two salary retained contracts (Edmundson and Petry, although Edmundson's salary is gone on July 1st). I believe the limit for a team is 3 retained salaries per season, so Montreal couldn't retain any salaries in future deals if they had to retain on Monahan. Highly doubt this is the final Canadiens trade we will see before March 8th.
Moving forward, Montreal could retain salary on someone else or help out another trade partner in a 3-team deal. Either way you slice it, you get a 1st for taking on Monahan's contract and you gain a 1st for trading him away. That is good asset management by Kent Hughes.

Fleeced? I don't think you know what that word means. Dude has 13 goals and 35 points with a 7th placed team that is only 6 points ahead of the Senators. And it will be a late first rounder. And and Monahan is at 55.0% for face offs, one of the weakest parts of the Jets' game, and will be a huge improvement. And and and he is most likely going to play with Kyle Connor or Nik Ehlers both of whom will be a definite improvement for him.
He is prone to injury, no question, but if he can stay healthy and plays to his potential, then this will be a win win for both teams.
They did. No doubt. The worst this is, is a 32nd overall pick but even then thats not bad. The habs have gotten guys like Mailloux and Mesar late in the draft who are great prospects. Considering all the risk with Monahan as well and the pick is unconditional its a fleece.
