  1. Trading him honestly doesn't make sense. At best we get a late first round pick. We should just resign him and build around him. If anything trade couture and get his contract off the books. He hasn't produced since becoming captain

  2. I think he's gone. Do we give out another massive 8-year contract, to a guy with a history of knee problems? Or do we trade him for maybe a first round pick and a top prospect? We're already saddled with these huge, long-term deals given to players who end up underperforming.

  3. Signing him is delusional. This team is not, and will not be good enough in the next few years. They HAVE to trade him, the return for him would be awesome and kick-start the “rebuild” or whatever management wants to call it.

  4. Why not trade him with the intention of him being a rental and try resigning him? If you can’t then you still got something for him. The playoffs are a very long shot at best and in all honesty we’d probably be a first round exit anyways. He gets to go to a contender with a legit shot at the Cup THIS season.

  5. If the Sharks were in the playoff mix, do you think that would greatly impact keeping Hertl on the Sharks for the rest of the season?

  6. CALGARY LOVES YOU Tomáš! They’ll sign you forevvvverrrr…..they have decades of issues saying goodbye to cancerous players. Go win as a rental. I know Calgary would love to have you long term….most would. The thing with Sharkie is that they’ll always overpay to bring you ‘home.’

  7. The mistake they've made in the past is to hang onto the player through the deadline, making the assumption that they'll be able to get something done in the summer through the magic of good intentions. I'm here to tell you, a player can love their team and their city, and intend 100% to sign an extension, but when that date comes around and other GMs start offering retirement contracts, some of them involving better linemates, better tax situations, better incentives, and frankly a chance to win… the guy starts to feel he wasn't valued and he is gone. If you can't get him signed by the week of the deadline, you move on. Personally, I could see the case for keeping Hertl because he's a pillar on and off the ice for the team you want to have. You could trade Timo Meier for a better package right now because he's not a UFA, and he's a simple scorer, which is what teams want at the deadline. But Brodie is right. If it can't get done now, you take the parting gifts.

  8. I want Hertl to come to Boston!! U can have Debrusk and Valkalanian, 2 former first round picks who are alot younger than Hertl..Perfect trade, Debrusk had 2 goals and the game winner the other night..Gm Don Sweeney is terrible in Boston

  9. Getting "something back" is certainly not good enough! The only way the Sharks should trade him is if they get a huge return, or if he turns the Sharks down flatly. Right now the Sharks should make generous offer and put the ball in Hertl's court. Hertl is a known commodity. Most compensation will come major questions.
