NFL Offseason Outlook for 49ers and Chiefs after the Super Bowl | CBS Sports
So let’s welcome back to the show Brady quinnn and Ryan Wilson we’re going to dive into the 49ers and what they should be looking at now that the off season is officially here Brady I’ll start with you first here uh in a year where everything really went right for the
49ers you know they had their quarterback stepping up The Playmakers doing what they needed to do uh and they still came up short short yeah so now as you approach the off seon if you’re Kyle Shanahan I know we touched on that in the block earlier but how are you sort
Of looking at the off season for the 49ers if got big considerations I think when you look at the roster I mean their defensive front has to find someone opposite of Nick Bosa Chase Young’s a free agent Randy Gregory’s a free agent even in an interior defensive tackle
Like Javon kinlaw is going to be a free agent so the strength of this defense has always been UPF front uh with all the draft picks that they’ve you know put into that group over the past few years so they’ve got to figure that out deshun Gibson’s also a free agent uh
Outside of that you know it’s then adding on and figuring out ways of restructuring some of the playmakers that you’ve got on your roster to maybe limit their cap hit to allow you to bring in some free agents outside of expecting one of some of these draft
Picks that are going to be added to the roster so it’s not going to be an easy off season a lot a lot of tough conversations and I think the hard thing is for players who maybe are unrestricted free agents it’s the do I want to come back and have the chance of
Playing for another Super Bowl and and do they question whether or not the 49ers can get that done versus if you’re the Chiefs and we’ll talk about them in a minute it’s a little easier after you won one to then come back and say I’ll take another discount because I know if
I’m with Patrick Mahomes I’m going to have a shot I don’t know that a lot of the the unrestricted free agents maybe are feeling the exact same way in San Francisco might want to give it some time see what your market value looks like before you want to sign back on a
More Team friendly deal in terms of the 49ers and some of the recent draft picks that they’ve had I mean Ryan you’re our you’re our draft expert here when you look back at some of the picks that they’ve had and some of the players obviously Brock py is you
Know the most famous of of and probably the most productive that they’ve had in recent in memory uh given that he was the last pick uh you know just a couple of seasons ago when you look at how the 49ers have drafted in the impact players
That they have had you see a couple of them here how do you assess the 49ers in moving forward they’ve hit on some pretty important position Brock pie is obviously the big one because of the Tre Lance trade they didn’t have a first round pick last year or the year before
And in fact they didn’t pick until the third round this year and they nailed Jr Brown who was a rookie uh allp Pro had the interception against Patrick mahom to start the the third quarter played really well when he was on the field after Huna got hurt and then the pick 99
A few picks later they took Jake Moody who momentarily set the longest field goal in a Super Bowl uh record uh John breach was probably the happiest person outside of the Moody family to see that happen bucker later broke it but they’ve had success with the picks when they
Haven’t had haven’t had those High picks excuse me that said they they’ve had opportunities to get players to help their team Ronnie Bell this year they drafted out of Michigan uh the year before they had had Danny gray at SMU sort of speed at the wide receiver position they didn’t necessarily need
Them but they may need them going forward and we’ll see how that uh plays itself out in terms of young players stepping in up stepping into these roles after a year or two in the system seeing how that works they will have a first- round pick this year as well uh to
Bolster any number of positions as Brady pointed out yeah the tough thing is too when you look at where San Francisco is oftentimes drafting when you make it to a Super Bowl is you don’t have that high pick so you got to hit on some of those
Later round picks where guys might not be as ready to go right in and have the impact that you’re hoping for they might need a little more time developing or a little more time assimilating into the NFL and into the system that you’re looking to run so that’s part of it but
I still think defensive line is going to be a big time you know looking concern I think you’re look at the right side of the offensive line too Feliciano is going to become a free agent he was playing Right Guard for them got banged up in last night’s game but that’s
Someone who you’re going to look to and I think continuing to look at and I wonder if they’re going to evaluate uh you know a potential backup quarterback or another quarterback behind perie and part because darnold is unrestricted unrestricted free AG Sam darnold but also you know maybe you’re looking at it
Saying like we want to make sure we have someone who gives us what we feel like is an opportunity if you love a guy and he’s there for you to take in a subsequent round not that he’s going to necessarily challenge Brock pie right now but you need to have someone in the
Room you feel good about if Pie Gets Hurt we’ve seen that before yeah that’s a great point when you think about Sam darnold I almost forget that he is technically the backup out in in San Francisco uh Ryan looking ahead to this year’s draft we know as Brady pointed
Out the Niners will pick very very very late in that first round I was at your latest mock draft you like them taking an offensive lineman maybe there with that position uh just tell us a little bit more about that and why you think that’s the direction they should go in the first
Round yeah I got a few names for you Haley by the way backup quarterback of the future in San Francisco M Jones make it happen all right here we go uh he was the guy that’s supposed to be a third overall pick back in the day imagine how
His future would have turned out had he gone there in another one all right that’s a sad tale here we go here are the guys that I’m supposed to be talking about Troy fanu the offensive tackle out of Washington uh he wears shorts haly this this is the guy that wears shorts
That our guy Rick Spielman doesn’t like because he wears shorts and plays football in them but he is incredibly versatile he’s incredibly athletic volleyball player coming out of high school so you have that athleticism can play outside probably plays inside to the next level Cooper dein I love his
Versatility I like him as a cornerback he also has some return skills he’s a big strong fast cornerback and then finally Darius Robinson which sort of checks a couple boxes as ready talked about he can play Edge went to the Senior Bowl kicked inside as well and he
Has the ability to play uh three technique or all the way out to five or seven te technique and he is an absolute Game Changer both in terms of his twitch and the power with which he plays that versatility makes him an interesting Prospect maybe he sneaks into the first
Round but he feels definitely a top 40 top 45 pick had a really strong season uh for Missouri in the fall take a look at some of those uh players that Ryan’s highlighting uh Brady let’s let’s focus on the Chiefs here and and their free agent see what
Their looks like I mean here’s the beautiful thing about winning the Super Bowl right when you have free agents and you know that you’ve got a good chance to to repeat it’s pretty easy to keep those guys around but you’ve got guys like Chris Jones lerus sne that are
Going to be guys looking for New Deals what does free agency look like for the Chiefs and that and and it’s not just about the guys that are free agents but maybe the guys that are about to become free agents down the line yeah I mean
Look it’s easy ear it’s not pretty easy again because everyone smells and looks like roses right beautiful after you win a Super Bowl and so once you hit that free agent Market you’re like yeah let me come join your team I can bring some of that Super Bowl pedigree we can
Figure this thing out for for your franchise and Chris Jones is going to have the argument more so than anyone because he has been the best defensive tackle in the league in recent history outside of a guy named Aaron Donald and so he should be able to cash in and the
Good thing for the Chiefs is you’ve got a quarterback you can always restructure with and you can push his contract a lot of those bonuses down the road it really comes down to the hunt family how much cash are you willing to spend in signing bonuses in order to give these players
What they’re looking for and be able to keep that number underneath the salary cap both Chris Jones and lerus sne to me are two guys that I don’t think you can allow hit the free agent Market even though they’ll probably both want to lerus sne showcase he can be one of the
Top corners locking down the best receiver for whoever the opponent is playing against and like I said before Chris Jones he’s getting up there in age so at 29 you kind of wonder how much of our financial commitment they’re willing to make it doesn’t seem like he’s
Letting down anytime soon though so he’d be a guy that I think if you look at what this contract extension may look like first two three years should be loaded up for him and then after that maybe you see a little less in the back end of the contract but both these guys
To me I don’t think you can let go because I think they’re kind of becoming the backbone of of what is a really really good defense under Steve Spagnola I always laugh when I hear like 29 you’re getting up an age because I’m also 29 so I’m like am I also getting up
In age no but NFL standards they look at you and they’re just like yep use Parts moving on l once you hit 3 0 they’re like happy birthday it’s a big one you got to go that’s typically how it works yeah and it makes sense when you think
About the wear and tear that guys like Chris Jones are taking too I just always laugh um Ryan when it comes to recent draft picks with Kansas City the one that jumps out to me just recently was Richi rice in the impact that he had in his first year uh becoming Patrick
Mahomes’s also reliable Target there next to uh Travis Kelce who have you seen just within the recent years with the draft as we take a look at some of the notable guys here uh that have really made an impact for the Chiefs yeah the 2023 class is pretty
Easy because rashie rice is basically the only show in town of Chiefs players who stepped up as rookies and had impacts but that 2022 class highlighted here except for the bottom name there and Rashid is the reason they won the Super Bowl and it starts at the top with
Trent McDuffy You could argue that he could have been a legit MVP candidate uh had did not go to Patrick Mahomes with the way he played George carus absolutely balling out Brian Cook was a big part of what they did until he got injured earlier in the year he plays
Safety Leo Chanel was making plays in that games Josh Williams was too those are all 2022 class members and of course as is Peko a seventh round pick uh did his part so I think what Brett Vach Andy Reid and that uh their scouting Department were able to do 2022 set the
Table for what they were able to accomplish not only last year winning the Super Bowl but also this year but again if Rashid rice isn’t there we’re having a different conversation because obviously Tyreek Hill is gone caderas Tony didn’t work out sky Moore struggled at times as a secondy year player and
Rashid rice ended up being the glue that brought it all together outside of Patrick Mahomes or Travis Kelce yeah look Brett V re have done a tremendous job I think draft allowing these guys to develop and you look at their defense and players like Trent McDuffy is an all
Pro this year George caraus has really continued to develop as an edge rusher I there’s a number of guys you can point to I think this is a draft though where you really got to focus in on the offense you got to help provide more weapons for Patrick Mahomes on the
Outside because to Ryan’s Point some of the guys they have taken outside of rice really haven’t developed and I think it might be time to start thinking about too you got one of those pass catching tight ends not to replace Travis Kelce but to provide you a different look with
Peko in the backfield I’d love to see more 12 Personnel out there on the field with Travis Kelce and another tight end who also you feel like can threaten the defense with various matchups but can help give you an advantage if you want to run the football I mean we touched on
This earlier clearly Andy Reid wanted to try to find a little more balance in their offensive attack I mean 18 rushes for Isaiah Peko 11 of those came on first down in particular kind of wanting to set the tone for that drive and so if that’s where they want to go moving
Forward wide receiver tight end and I think also the tackle position remember Donovan Smith’s a free agent The Tackle play wasn’t great this year that’s another position group they really should look at all right so let’s talk about those targets then the last couple of drafts in the second round they’ve
Taken wide receivers Rashid rice obviously you know one of the contributors to the Super Bowl success this season but as Brady mentioned Ryan I mean they do have some issues that are kind of in the trenches as you look at top targets for them who’s on that
List yeah it’s like Bray and I are cheating off the same paper here because I had them going with Jaylen gon the offensive tackle out of Oklahoma as a possibility at the bottom of the first round uh he’s coming off a really strong season played opposite Anton Harrison
Last year Anton Harrison ended up going to the Jacksonville Jaguars and starting right away Jaylen pul uh was the other wide receiver quotation marks in Washington outside of Roman dun who had a big gear feels like he can come in right away and be a Difference Maker
With his athleticism and uh Brady I’m curious what you think about old jaavan Sanders there because you talked about an athletic pass catching tight end he will offer you nothing in the way of blocking that’s okay if that’s not what you’re looking for but he is a special
Talent down the field and can provide uh provide Patrick Mahomes another weapon outside of uh Sergeant D is true outside of Travis Kel come on R we’ve been doing this for long enough now you know how you have to word that you have to say is
He a willing blocker is he willing to block I do believe tavien is a willing blocker we’re just still honing in that skill set uh but it it does um bring up the point of he’s a tough matchup he’s a tremendous athlete tough matchup for anyone who’s got to go up against him
And and you look at the different ways Andy Reid likes to utilize that talent to find those mismatches and and different little wrinkles in their offense he would make a lot of sense there so uh this this to me is a big draft for them because I think if they
Do want to get that third Super Bowl title they can’t miss they have to keep hitting with some of the pieces that they’ve got to bring back in free agency Leica Jones and sne those are going to be huge cap numbers and even with restructuring Patrick Mahomes deal if
They want to to create more space they’ve still got to hit on all these draft picks in particular the late round ones draft will be here before we know it gentlemen we love this conversation we’re going to keep it going here on the other side but we got to hit a break
Here you can get more draft coverage though by tapping into the with the first pick podcast with Ryan Wilson and our good friend Rick Spielman uh their latest they’ve got their mock draft 7.0 currently up in the latest episode so tap in as we get closer to that draft coming up later this

The boys played their hearts out! I'm so proud of this team and prayers to dre for a speedy recovery. We'll need him for next season!!
Jayir Brown was not a rookie all pro š¤£
Niners should draft a high qb with a different skill set than Purdy.
7:41 "Teehee are you saying 29 is old, that is my age…"
Thanks to all the priveleged undeserving women in sports media for constantly derailing conversations!
What about the 49ers O-line.
It has been a weakness all year long.
Yeah Chiefs are gonna aim to re-sign Snead Jones, draft a LT, sign and draft at reciever and LB
Gay Tranquilly Jones Sneed will be retained
KC: Improve the WR core
Improve the LB core
Resign key free agents
SF: Improve O-Line
Improve CB room
Niners really just need to beef up their o line, and get a good shut down corner back. In recent years, we have relied on the front seven protecting the secondary. This past season, in spite some calls from the DC in Wilks, they still played well enough to win, but this past season, many OC's around the league that have had to play the Niners have been having their qb's get the ball out quicker. I will just leave it at that.
See! He mentioned that niners need another back up qb niners need to draft jj McCarthy he fits the scheme great and more talented then purdy
Jj McCarthy to the niners go ninersš
They should trade.give my jets purdy niners can take zach wilson, hell i evon throw aaron too if they want.
Taylo swift is great at art and Travis Kelce is great at sport, imagine they produce a kid great at both to play SB and Perform Halftime show at the sametime. Its gonna be crazy lol.
As a niners fan we gotta be winners in one of these scripts some time or another shitš
if the AAF uses hub cities , and partners with German Football or the IFAF . They should return 2024
Like Bum Phillips coach of the Houston Oillers said this year were nocking at the door next year were going to kick the Son of beach down, in reflection what the Dallas Cowboys are going to do in 2024
