In 1993, The Toronto Maple Leafs & The LA Kings faced off in the conference finals to determine who would meet the Montreal Canadiens for the Stanley Cup. In that series, we learned what happens when Wayne Gretzky breaks the rules, and gets away with it.

  1. How can you call a call you dont see? All of this is foolish, today is different with replay, the lefs payed dirty in those days like the flyers and bruins, it just caught them up.

  2. I think the hockey psychology to take away from this one is that gretsky mindtricked the refs by being in there face about everything that was his fault and holding back in this one moment acting like he had no reason to talk to the ref

  3. They'd give you a major penalty or more for that today, but yeah back then it was actually debatable because of the way games were refereed, especially in the playoffs. There's a conspiracy that Canadian teams were kept out of the later rounds deliberately due to ratings, the sort of thing that's hard to prove because the calls were made in such a "subjective" manner. Edit: was talking about the Leafs penalty. Just saying there were a lot of missed calls in the playoffs and many seemed dubious.

  4. The thing is, It never shoulda got to that point. The LA Kings shoulda gotten a penalty shot… which clearly everyone saw. The high stick, was almost unseeable even if youre trying to catch it. I truly believe noone saw it. There wasn't replay like there is now for that kinda shit.
Gretzky got his ass handed to him in the finals though. 3 overtime losses, 1-2 were double overtime. They couldn't win a single game in OT, they lost every game by a goal, that series was 100% won by Patrick Roy. Wayne had like 6 assists in the 5 games but not a single goal, yet the legendary underrated defenseman Eric Desjardins scored EVERY, SINGLE, GOAL in a 3-2 double overtime win!

  5. There was another ignored call going in Gretzk’s favour in game 7 too. It was at the end of the game in the faceoff circle and Gilmour was again the victim of Gretzky’s stick. Poor officiating in the NHL is a plague.

  6. What I always wondered was if Robitaille or Simmer did it and not Gretzky, would it be called?

  7. Big leafs fan. Was an eye witness to Gretzky’s greatest game.
Can only argue one thing in your video. Carey Frazier has great hair, not merely good. Even today.

  8. I find this a little bit ridiculous. It was a great series, one of the best of all time tbh. Both sides were playing extremely chippy and yet it’s still being talked about because of a missed high stick? Do you guys know how many missed high sticks there are? I feel like this whole thing is overblown.

  9. I mean, maybe it's the Leafs' hater in me, but it's kind of hard to feel sorry for them about one blown call among many in that game, especially with a Game 7 at home to fix it.

  10. Game 5 2019 finals Bozak Trips acciari contributing to Perrons go ahead goal.. still one of the worst reffing moments in nhl history

  11. leaf fans always believe what they want. yes it changed the momentum and hard to say if they would have won that game. they got their asses handed to them in game 7. leaf fans assume if they won that series they would have beaten montreal. Montreal smoked LA btw. leafs somehow find a way to beat montreal? possible yes, probable, no. Going into the finals leafs had lost 9 games and montreal lost 3. Montreal only lost 4 games in the entire playoff run and remember who they had in net that year? Some guy who won 4 cups.
