The Hockey Guy with another breakdown of the Jackets.

This guy understands our team better than 80% of those in the national media.

I should tell all future dates that proof of me being loyal is from me being a fucking Blue Jackets fan

Decent overall assessment, really. Strong fan base and location that’s easy to visit for close away fans. Full cupboard of prospects that needs a front office/coaching staff with direction and intent.

It’s nitpicky, but he talks about recent first round picks and skips over Sillinger and Mateychuck. Why?

*The ongoing mediocrity of the Columbus Blue Jackets*

I keep saying it and I will die on this hill…Columbus fanbase is a sleeping giant. The 5th line is waiting for their moment to have a true coming out party spite it being 20+ years and once they do the league won’t be prepared. Nationwide can get loud and fan can go all in…we just need a true period of sustained success and not short little periods of success hitting playoffs then drop back off into 24+ in the standings.

    Key takeaways:

    – Jackets have consistently been mediocre in their 24 year history in the NHL. Only 8 seasons where team was above .500, and just one above .600.
    – It’s more just a stigma at this point that players don’t wanna play in CBus, but doesn’t help when Panarin, Bob, etc.. don’t re-sign.
    – Despite mediocrity, team is… stable. Fans still turn up in droves to watch even bottom feeding CBJ teams. Will never be a threat of relocation.
    – Columbus has never had that bonafide “superstar”. Nash was great but club failed to give him a team. Gaudreau is the most recent example of a player brought in to turn club fortunes, but has largely underperformed. Fantilli is the latest name that could turn into that massive franchise superstar that headlines contending teams.
    – Columbus, even in their best years, was never a true “contender”. 2016/17 finished 4th in NHL and nobody really talked about them as contending. Best year outside of 16/17 was 18/19, where they were #2 WC going into playoffs.
    – 2019 loss vs Boston changed franchise trajectory. If they get through Boston and make a run to the Stanley Cup finals, even if they lose to St. Louis, it would’ve done so much for the franchise, its reputation, etc…
    – New GM is in tough spot. On one hand, Hockey Guy said in previous video on Jarmo firing that Columbus isn’t in a situation of ground zero or needing to tear everything down; they have a solid foundation that new GM can use.
    – The problem is that the new GM not only has to improve the team, he has to make an actual contender and change the identity of the club. No longer enough to just be filling in the numbers in the playoffs, Columbus needs to have a top 10 team in the league which is consistently top 3 in the Metro.
