The New York Islanders Suffer Another Embarrassing Collapse at the Stadium Series to the Rangers

The New York Islanders suffered another embarrassing collapse and fell to the Rangers 6-5 in overtime. We’ll break down what went wrong again and discuss the event itself which was full of excitement and pageantry. There were some bright spots like Brock Nelson and Noah Dobson, but the third period was the same old story with bad penalties and a poor penalty kill that blew a 5-3 lead with 5:00 left in the game.

Plus, we’ll discuss how this changes things for Lou Lamoriello, Patrick Roy, and the Islanders at the trade deadline.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Gil. WIth Lou having squandered the team's future draft picks augmented by overpriced multi year guaranteed contracts this team is a number of years from being competitive. If the team is headed to the bottom, best get it over and trade the team's few remaining assets for high level draft picks … Had I been ownership, I would have fired Lou on the spot after today's collapse. Penalties from Mayfield, Lee, and Barzal combined with slopping defense from Dobson are not only common they are lethal with the league's worst PK … I am done watching for the remainder of the season as this team is just too painful to watch. I can only assume Roy is going to play out the string with these guys.

  2. Tell it like it is Gil, tell it like it is….Just not good enough, accurate and honest…..Still i am a lifer…LGI !!

  3. I THINK THE ONLY WAY TO TURN THIS SHIP AROUND IS TO GET RID OF BARZAL, HORVAT AND VARLAMA FOR DRAFT PICKS. I DONT SEE ANY OTHER WAY TO DO THIS IF THIS TEAM IS TO BECOME A TRUE CUP CONTENDER. AS FAR AS THE NO TRADE CLAUSES IF YOU TRADER HORVAT, BARZAL AND VARLAMA TO A CONTENDER THEY WILL WILLINGLY GO.

  4. Owners need to fire Lou and get a GM in here for a complete tear down and rebuild. It's over for this group. This is a lottery team.

  5. Gil, how do we know if there’s no one coming up from Bridgeport? The kids haven’t been given a chance with the fossil here for six years. We saw Durandeau last season obviously was ready for the nhl but Lou trades his arse. Of course iskhakov can’t get a look. The best offensive talent in the organization. Don’t look now Maggio on fire in Bridgeport with five goals in eight games. Kyle Maclean already showed he was ready this year. Senile Lou should send clutter and Martin packing. Bring up Iskhakov and Maclean and really shake up the cul de sac crew. But nothing is going to change with this 81 year old shell of a Gm here. Like I said Gil, the defense would be worse when mayfield,Pelech, pulock returned. I’d rather see bolduc and bortuzzo (when healthy) than mayfield and Reilly. Mayfield should be sitting next game. Let’s see what st. Patrick will do if anything. Lou should have been FIRED right after lasts night embarrassment but we know the property brothers don’t care. Raising season tickets next year 12% good luck with that! lol The place should be a ghost town. If any of u buy season tickets u should have your head examined!

  6. Time for the islanders to just admit they stink. this game should have been handed to them. Shesterkin was playing terrible. He couldnt stop a beach ball. AND THEY STILL FOUND A WAY TO LOSE. They arent making the playoffs. They are in no mands land for the next 5 years because they have traded away all their picks. Sorry isles fans. the 40 year drought aint ending any time soon.

  7. I never played in a game where there wasn’t a penalty called. I don’t even know how these guys play defence. Yeah, the player stepped on his stick-blade and he slipped. It was all planned out by the Rags because they knew they couldn’t win this game 5 on 5. The only chance the Rags had to win this game was via the PP. Hey, let’s be honest: The Rags aren’t a great 5-5 team. They rely on their PP way too much and come playoff time? I’ll be surprised if they make it past the first or second round. I’m at a loss for words, because how can you play hockey if you’re going for the puck and the guy dives as soon as he feels the stick by his feet? People say “You can’t take penalties!” Do people honestly believe they wanted to take penalties? I guess you could sit back and let them skate around you and not play defense. So we don’t make the playoffs, big deal! It is what it is. I strongly disagree with that last penalty. Because this is hockey and players fall. I love how 93 for the Rags had his hands up like “Aren’t you going to call a penalty?” This type of officiating made me walk away from the sport for about 10 yrs and I’m starting to get to that point again with all these phantom calls. Let’s not even get in the the embellishment when a stick is high. Lol, I’ve seen guys not even get hit yet they almost give themselves whiplash trying to sell a cheap call.

  8. The first person I trade is Ilya Sorokin. You can get a haul for him! You can 2 first-round picks, a second pick that turns into a 1st and a 3rd that turns into a second pick if they win the SC. You can get draft picks and good prospects for Pulock and Pelech. You’ll get a low draft pick for Wahlstrom. My core is Horvat, Dobson, Barzal and Romanov. Everyone else is on the trading block and the biggest asset we have right now? Is Ilya Sorokin! I hope Lou has the balls to pull the ripcord on a mega trade for Sorokin, but he has to do it NOW. Full rebuild mode! Hey, if we suck for 3-6 year? So be it! Also, buy out some contracts if you can! I’m done! I want a full rebuild. I only watch the Isles because I can’t stand watching other teams play and all the bogus penalties! It makes for horrible regular season unwatchable hockey for teams I don’t root for.

  9. Every game they take bad penalties at the end of the game and can't kill a penalty. They don't learn and make that same mistake game after game. Mayfield should be waived and sent to Bridgeport. Nobody will touch that contract. He was a mediocre player before his injuries and has taken a step back. On top of that he takes 2 bad penalties at a crucial point of a game. Roy, at the very least needs to healty scatch him next game to send a message to the team that bad penalties at the end of a game are unacceptable. This could be rock bottom.

  10. Gill my respect to you ,dot know how you doing it but I will give up long time ago THANK YOU! Now 10 hours after game heads are cool…This team is embarrassment for all of Iskanders fans ….I'm asking all fans to please stop going to wach games we need change so bad. LOU should step down today or should be fired today players I hate them but I understand them not they fool that they are over payed if I am in their shoes I do the same….yesterday's game ,zI swear on my Father's grave zI stop watching after second period I know exactly what's coming……. keep Roy if he want to stay give him coaching and GM jobs , and clean h ouse we are late already ….LG ISLANDERS❤❤❤

  11. What should isles do at tdl? SELL SELL SELL. What isles can't do at tdl is SELL SELL SELL. Isles are in no position to do shit. Flames on the other hand are about as far out of playoffs in west as isles are in east yet flames control the tdl. Why? Because they have ufa's teams want and the top goalie they don't have to move on the market. Its all about flexibility. Flames already moved lindholm for a nice haul. Once tanev, hanafin, and probably markstrom get moved by flames they will have re-tooled their team with nice pieces of youth/picks going forward. Isles on the other hand can't do shit unless you foolishly think 15, 17, and 26 can bring the haul needed to re-tool. 27, 21, 24 immoveable buy outs down the line. Should move 44 but wont. Isles need to id 3-4 players that can get them the best haul and do it. Even if that means 13, 30, 29. That will be the job of next gm one day. And if louzer has his phone waiting for tdl call thinking he has something other teams want then he really is an insane old fool. Tuff shit louzer-no deals for you.

  12. That game yesterday was Groundhog Day, a microcosm of the season. Spot on diagnosis, Gil, of the teams’s current predicament. Neither Lou nor ownership would ever admit this, but the time to rebuild was after the second run to the conference finals, but with the new arena opening and a need to to fill 19,000 seats there was a reluctance to go backwards. As a result, we have had several years of treading water, and delaying the inevitable…

  13. Gil, you sound disappointed. lol This game actually gave me hope for the Isles. The Rangers are a top 5 team in the league that should have slaughtered the Isles. Instead, the Isles outplayed them 5 on 5 all game long. It took a few dumb penalties and two 6 on 4 goals with the Rangers goalie pulled. IMO, without the Lee, Mayfield and Barzal penalties, the Isles aren't so gassed in the last few minutes and are able to weather the storm the Rangers brought.
I hope Roy saw it the way I did and compliments them on their play, then benches Mayfield for a game. He's been killing us with his really dumb penalties late in games. We have 2 extra defensemen on the roster. Put them in and get Mayfields head right. 3 minors, 2 at key moments and every single one avoidable should get him 2 games off.

  14. Islanders have created a Country Club environment on this team. This teams since the days of Barry Trotz never had any accountability where veterans are concerned.

The plethora of 7 year contracts with NTC or partial NTC has made the situation worse

This team needs a culture change in the locker room

    Short term
Lou needs to have a Press Conference and literally call out specific players

Time to call up Ishakov and Koivula

    4th line needs to sit
    Pierre E needs to sit

  15. The ice was terrible by the end of this game. Making any team or personnel decisions based on some sort of ridiculous outdoor game is a mistake. That said the Islanders are one of the worst defensive teams in the league and have been for years. Only the Sharks give up more shots against. They have one of the best tandems in the NHL. That alone is keeping them in the fight for a playoff spot. The team is old. The Islanders have the worst prospect pool in the NHL.
The hiring of Patrick Roy is a last gasp for a failed team. They are in a tanking situation even though management and ownership doesnt realize it, yet.

  16. Good morning team. Gil, absolutely right, as usual. Extremely, EXTREMELY embarrassing. Two things I didn't like. Well, make it three things. This was supposed to be an Islander HOME GAME! I understand, this is way after the fact. Not only was I severely PI$$ED and how the game turned out and how we lost a game we had every opportunity to win. I HATED how the scoreboard was flashing RANGERS WIN at the end of the game. Show me any other venue that excitedly flashing the 'visiting team' as the game winner?? Please guys, PLEASE stay out of the penalty box! And if you do have to kill a penalty, dumb or otherwise; PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK, PK!! Lastly, I was so sure, after the Rangers pulled Shesterkin, TWICE, we were going to score the empty netter. Which, of course didn't happen. On to the next one. Everyone, have a great day! Talk to you again tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  17. Get rid of Mayfield and put Bortuzzo in… He is defensively responsible and doesn't take penalties, which Mayfield does quite often. At the trade deadline, acquire a big defensman and a scoring sniper

  18. that was painful. And yet while i was watching , I never felt that we were going to hold on. Mayfield has to sit and if possible (it isn't) traded…how spent last offseason spending months trying to lock up his below average third d pairing guy to a seven year contract is just…..replace with bortuzzo,…can't be worse. Let's talk about OT, where we win the draw, bring puck into our own zone and dobson lazily passes puck through the goalie crease ….terrible, terrible, terrible.

  19. Boy oh boy that was a painful loss yesterday. Kinda getting used to it at this. Just getting that loser point time n time again sucks. Your absolutely right Gil thats not gonna cut it. And i dont wanna hear any player say glad we got a point anymore either. Im not giving up hope just yet! Gil do u really think they need 108 pts to get into the playoffs this year? We got some important must win games against other teams in the east fighting for a wildcard. If they can win those specific games. Im hoping a 18-10 or 19-9 run can get us in!?

  20. Lou LoserIllo locked up mayfield and engvall for 7 years!!! That is GM malpractice and flat out lazy + stupid. Worst GM in the NHL

  21. tough game. curious your thoughts on Maclean and Ishakov. Maclean got a cup of coffee two weeks ago and scored a goal. Ishakov was very Barzal-like when I saw him in Bport

  22. They deserved to lose. Every player in that locker room should be ashamed of themselves. Especially Mayfield. He should have been waived 10 minutes after that loss.
