Penguins with a gut-punch of a loss on Jagr Night

The Pittsburgh Penguins had a tremendous ceremony for Jaromir Jagr on Sunday evening but the team wasn’t able to get the win after it concluded. Before Hunter and Pat recap the game, they discuss the ceremony and how the Penguins get an A+ for delivering on how good it was. Hunter details what he saw when he was at the game and how he even got a bit emotional, plus what Pat thought as Jagr was giving his speech. They look at how the team did right by him this entire weekend and go into detail about other things regarding his ceremony before crushing the 2023-24 team for losing that game to the Kings. They discuss how the Penguins didn’t have much of a forecheck throughout, especially in the third period, and how that’s a bit concerning since the Kings had just played on Saturday. They also continue to discuss how there are too many passengers on the team and how it might finally be time to start selling off some assets. Finally, they look at the week ahead for this team.

  1. Great night, awful game outcome. Lets go pens! Lets make the best of the rest of this season and give crosby some help out there!

  2. Also, smith is a no-show, and eller is so invested imo that he is trying too hard and making mistakes. Plus, now he's on pp1?

  3. Smith ,Rakell and Graves need to be traded even if you only get a hockey stick ! Pens far, far, far to soft and nothing has been done about it all year !

  4. This team is so disappointing!! Its pathetic!! Power Play should be far better than they are! On paper they are elite!!! In person they are toilet paper! Dubas is more scared than Hextal to make changes!!!

  5. the problem is that if you going make sid score goal every game in order for us to win then this team is in deeper hole

  6. Honestly I'm officially of the opinion that a coaching change has to happen at the end of the season. It's pointless right now, this season is a lost cause, but I think it has to happen at the end of the season. Sullivan's style of play just isn't working anymore, and games have become incredibly boring on top of that. Sitting through games is seriously a chore this season. I think at the end of the season Dubas needs to bring in his preferred coach, and then spend the rest of the offseason doing some serious retooling so they can give it their best shot next season.

  7. Pretty sure my face was hurting from smiling so much during the Jagr ceremony! It was so surreal to see all the past coaches, players, personal people to Jagr, and of course him! A++ to the organization for that part. Crappy game. I agree, I'm out on the team this year. Too many passengers and players who are bizarrely just not producing. Sell off as many assets you possibly can. Reshape the roster in the offseason and make coaching changes. Still don't understand how Reirden still has a job

  8. If Jake isn't traded when he gets back, I really think he and Rust should be put back with Malkin. Like you guys mentioned, Sid has clearly shown that he can drive a line (likely with Rakell and maybe Smith though I'd be interested in seeing DOC cycle in)

  9. Since we're reminiscing to the late 90s/early 2000s … the Pens would have needed Dominik Hasek in his prime to make the playoffs this season with the way the forwards simply cannot score this season.

  10. 100 percent agree on the ceremony to Jagr, absolutely A plus by The Penguins in that regards. Unfortunately, the game was not as good. I'm not going to get too deep because we know the team is just flawed and as has been said, too many passengers. Kyle Dubas definitely has a lot of work to do and some very tough difficult decisions to make.

I did see, he is scheduled to meet with local reporters on Wednesday. So, we may get some answers from the man himself in a couple of days, especially coming after a big game tomorrow night against the Islanders.

I personally would not be upset if Kyle Dubas punted on the season and started to retool for next year. If he uses the trade deadline to get an early start to the offseason and look forward to next year, I am perfectly okay with that.

  11. From the Burgh. Born and raised on the Northside. I come back 4-5 times a year. I luckily got to be at the celebration/game yesterday…on my birthday! 🙌

  12. Jagr loves the Pens and during the 2nd period (interview in the booth) he was more concerned with helping solve the teams problems rather than patting himself on the back by basking in the adulation of the two commentators. That's what a winner does – makes others better. Jagr is a winner.

  13. The other day, I saw a new meme about the Pens power play. "The Pens scoring on the power play is like winning the lottery…and has about the same odds."

I'm curious to see what the results of Dubas, allegedly, telling Spezza, "changes are coming" as they were leaving their box, after the game.

  14. I'm going to say it, again, and will continue to do so, until it happens and I am proved wrong…Sully, and the entire coaching staff, need to go. Aside from the core players…he's the only other thing consistent on this team since 2018. They've had these issues since losing to the Caps in the playoffs. They've just gotten worse…the blown leads, the lack of heart in must win games, etc.

  15. Go back and watch Geno's interview from the Jagr weekend events…you can see it in his face…he's baked and done. He seemed to regret signing a new contract and not retiring.

  16. Steigy put it the best, I really think if it wasn't for the Penguins really bad financial situation they were going through in the late 90s to early to mid 2000s, Jagr I think I would've stayed in Pittsburgh longer than he did. It just goes to show, they respect him as a player, as a person, and everything he did for the Penguins franchise and the NHL and game of hockey as a whole.

  17. This is a zoomer, with a childhood filled with successful hockey, in crisis. Lol this is how young Patriots fans feel in Boston the last couple years. Take a deep breath. Its gonna be just fine my guy

  18. My sister and I were in attendance for this game. The atmosphere in the arena during the ceremony felt electric!
