Both of these teams were absolutely stacked top to bottom. What a great time to watch hockey

  2. Odd-Elderberry-6137

Yzerman by a hair. The two 60 goal seasons and 155 points put him over the top. Outside of that, you would be hard pressed to find two other NHL HOFers who were as close to each other in career trajectories as these two.

Two legends and either one has a solid case. Call it a tie.

As always when I am asked this question, only one answer comes top mind.

It will always be no. 19

I’m biased, I say the Captain. Sakic was fucking great too though. I’ve never held a hate for another team that was a strong as the hate I had for the Avalanche.

  6. REDitor_31

Don’t make me choose man. Those two were best part of my childhood. (Still miss having Detroit in the West cause the rivalry)

  7. CreateorWither

That is a hard call. I think I gotta go with Stevie Y.

  8. fatch0deBoi34

Fuckin Equal bro. Don’t pin these two legends against each other lol

  9. HockeyTownHooligan

The real debate was Fedorov vs Forsberg

  10. Neon_Sternum

Sakic because he got Devon Toews for two second rounders.

  11. Two legends and two great captains and GMs/execs
    Id say tie

  12. they were equally incredible. nearly the same exact player in a ton of ways.

Yzerman would have to get my vote. But not by much.

  14. RichSuckley

Personal preference. They’re both on the same level

That’s really difficult to answer. Yzerman by just a little bit tho. Detroit had the better offense but with Roy in the net Colorado the better defense. This was such an amazing series to watch. Colorado was a new team and Sakic and Forsberg were fuckin awesome 👍 Federov just destroyed. Yzerman was kinda like Gretzky in his demeanor. My opinion.

Can not pick between these 2 awesome players.

  17. I find it funny how those two players are always paired together.

There is no real reason for this appart being two Center from rival teams playing in the same era but we rarely see other Center or that era pinned against Sakic and Yzerman.

I’m a huge Sakic and Avs fan, he is probably in my all time top 3 favorite player but ever I have to say it’s a tie. Both legends and both great captain and class act.

They even both went to become GM of their team… linked destiny.

My bias says The Captain, but if I remember right, Sean Avery during his Wings days said that he was talking shit to Joe Sakic, one of the Wings players hit him pretty hard and told him to watch his mouth about Mr. Sakic. When you got that kind of respect to the point where the opposing team won’t tolerate slander or chirping on your behalf, that says a lot.

I don’t think you could make a wrong choice for either

  19. Last_Set_8634

I think it’s more a question of preference. I was a huge Yzerman fan. I love the transformation from a high flying scorer to a total player and consummate leader/captain. But Joe Sakic was no less special

  20. AKchaos49

In my heart, it’s The Captain.

    Stats-wise:

    Yzerman
    GP G A PTS +/- PIM GWG
    1,514 692 1,063 1,755 +184 924 94

    Sakic
    GP G A PTS +/- PIM GWG
    1,378 625 1,016 1,641 +30 614 86

    So, yeah. Steve

Steve Yzerman is the greatest Captain in NHL history.

Not for any play on the ice…but for the moment when Jiri Fischer collapsed (hear attack). Yzerman cleared the area around Fischer, ensured that doctors and paramedics were working, then skated across to the gate and escorted Fischer’s partner (fiancee, spouse, gf?) across the ice to the bench so she could be there with him.

This is instinctive leadership on a level that most people will never be faced with. This makes him the greatest C in NHL history…that and the 1500+ games, 1700+ points, 3 Stanley Cups, Canada Cup and Olympic Gold.
