This has to be something we at least consider, right?

  1. Not at that cap hit. If he was bought out, maybe.

    If he’s bought out absolutely.

    For those saying “he’s cooked”

The front office of the caps said he has wanted a change of scenery for a while and we obviously don’t know how the player assistance program and his issues factored into his current play.

Orlov spent the all star break with him and his family. I would expect us to offer him something.

Why? He’s absolutely horrible and we’d need to clear some cap space to fit him

No, not a chance, you don’t take on a project like that mid-season.

I’m sure management will consider it, briefly, and only once the Caps come to the table offering to retain 50% in a trade. I’d wager there is absolutely zero chance any team claims him in his current state – at that cap hit – and another year left on the deal.

  6. If he was a pending FA this off season maybe you do it. Cap still would still be an issue even then, but you could make a deal elsewhere to fit him in or trade the coveted Future Considerations for him in a few days if you need time to make that move. But with another year at that cap hit? Hell no. I probably wouldn’t trade for him with 75% retained even. We have to resign half the defense (someone’s leaving here for sure), Turbo, Marty, Noesen, Necas, Drury, and Jarvis, who is going to get paid.

This is why I don’t get too “the cap is going up a lot next year” when looking at moves this year and in the pre-July 1 off season after the parade in June ;). If we even traded for Kusnetsov at 75% retained, we’re probably losing Turbo or the other of Skjei/Pesce as well as Pesce/Skjei that’s expected. Necas and Drury can file for arbitration too, so they may get a sizable pay bump from that, which means there’s a chance one of them may also be gone even if we don’t make a move like this.

  7. Nope. He’ll get bought out because no one wanted his contract the last two years the Caps actively tried to move him and sure won’t touch it now. Maybe he can try after that and resurrect his career in Arizona or elsewhere but can’t see any playoff team wanting anything to do with him. He’s 31 and declining. Hard pass.
