Penalty Shot for Marner in OT

2nd intermission of Pens/Flames game: the panel just showed this saying they thought it should’ve been a penalty shot for Marner at the end of OT

Colour me shocked – refs suck at their job

  2. And then showed the replay of Boosh getting charged in the head, highlighting that he didn’t finish the game due to a head injury, and the only commentary was that Keefe said that he “didn’t like the hit”.

If Reaves lays that hit he’s suspended at least a couple games.

Ah! I told my wife I feel like that should have been a penalty shot but they didn’t say anything so I figured I was wrong.

I guess though this requires a “deliberate” too many men which is nearly impossible to prove?

  4. TO_Sports

Is there a clip of this penalty? Passed out early and missed the game

  5. M0dern_Leper

Ok, time for my hot take. Make all penalties in the last minute of regulation/OT a penalty shot. Then you likely won’t have players taking deliberate penalties.

I think the issue here is trying to prove it was deliberate. The announcers said that it was, but check the replay… it’s close. One could argue it was just an enthusiastic and desperate player flying off the bench to try and get in the action, and a tired one slow to get off.

It doesn’t matter, we got it done.

  7. So, the average NHL ref is probably worse than an AA baseball umpire or the ref at a Texas high school football game.. Tell me something I don’t know.

Half of them would probably screw up a WWE match..

While yeah it should have been a Penalty shot, it’s also damn near impossible to prove it was intentional unless it was clear as day there was a Scoring chance and there was no player trying to get off when the extra player hopped on the ice.

I don’t even think if this was the other way around they’d get the shot, because it’s too hard to tell

I am sure Bettman will step in, discipline the refs and apologize for the Leafs getting jobbed again. /s

  10. Surprise!

A ref not knowing or understanding the rules you say?

    In the NHL?

Nah, that could never be true.

My initial thought was that it should be a penalty shot but just assumed I was being a homer,

  12. areu_kiddingme

My first thought was penalty shot and then a pp for 7 seconds was just stupid

  13. rick__c_137

I was today years old when I learned this was a rule.

I also don’t like that a cleared puck that hits the post is an icing. Used to be if it entered the crease it was waived off.

That game was officiated really badly. There were so many stick infractions, guys tying each other up for way too long, holding each others sticks and nothing got called. And of course the missed charging call and now not following the rules properly…

  16. captaincrunch1985

Aww man, op is going to get fined with this post.

  17. I yelled that at my tv last night. Don’t know why they didn’t award it 🙁

  18. cbunnyrsm

Extend overtime until the penalty is over or award an extra penalty shot during the shootout.

Also, big picture, why are overtime games worth 3 points and the other games 2 points?

  19. I was saying this last night. I was at the game and thought it should have been called.

  20. dannybee66

I was thinking they should impose a rule around this. I guess yesterday’s officials just didn’t want to enforce any.

  21. DaltonFitz

“When you play and come into Toronto, you know what goes on”.

  22. In this case, Marner has a clear path to the net, due to being impeded by extra player, a penalty shot should have been awarded. Any normal minor penalty when he isn’t in a clear cut scoring opportunity, the normal penalty sb called.

  23. Jhool_de_nishaan

We need Keefe to throw up gang signs like Paul Maurice in game one last year.

  24. Beauuuuty

Sometimes it feels like the only prerequisite to being an NHL ref is having prior skating experience

  25. Orange_Sherbet

I was wondering about this! Thanks for the post. Another example of the NHL not knowing it’s own rules. Yaaaaay…

  26. Ryrace111

Correct me if I’m wrong didn’t Nylander do this in the playoffs and everyone praised it as a genius play?
