The Leafs primary purpose is to increase shareholder value of MLSE. They do so via scoring lots of goals with marquis players/personalities and having a satisfactory regular season. However, they are not built to win against Stanley Cup contenders because they aren't constructed for that purpose. Matthews, Marner and the Swedish guy are softies who get muscled asily; they're not John Tonelli-type guys. And the Leafs can't play defence in their own end. BUT, they make a lot of $ for their owners.
