Don Sweeney REACTS to Bruins Trade Deadline | Press Conference

Uh thanks everybody um probably a little quieter deadline relative to last year for some teams us maybe not some others but uh you know it’s as you all know it’s not just one day it’s obviously a long time leading up to a um you know a

Deadline so to speak but uh you know we felt comfortable where our team uh in the last three games has played uh certainly taking a better Direction credit to the staff uh you know for sort of getting their attention again players responding um last night’s game probably indicates where you know

Playoff hockey is going to start to take a turn to we tried to address uh the depth of our club and probably in particular areas um and then you know we’re going to we we needed to also give the the group a push you know um you

Know people you guys will ask me in terms of of maintaining your ufas and pending ufas and such but for our group and and the work that they’ve put in this year um you know we’re trying to put together the best most competitive team we can and uh and that was the

Direction we decided to go um today and continue to add to our group and uh you know thank Luke karowski and Jacob zoral for for being Boston Bruins and uh and wish them well both in Minnesota and uh and with Columbus um Pat’s coming back off of a a

Disc surgery so he’s probably four and a half weeks removed just started to get back on the ice we don’t have a definitive timeline there we’ll just let that play out get accustomed with our um medical team um and let him progress you know we know when he plays his best

Hockey and and the fact is he’s he’s been part of championship teams in the pedigree that he has um and and and what he brings to the table I think will be important to us on and off the ice and uh and we’re excited to bring Pat on

Board and Andrew uh addresses another need for us you know in depth in the right side size penalty killing U you know years past we’ve gone through most of the defenseman at certain times and and areas of the game that he can um help booster our our group and bring

Balance to our group I think is important uh he’s been in out of the lineup you know we’ve watched him um you know even the last couple nights where he’s he’s gone in and played 20 minutes against you know the Evanson oers last night so I think there’ll be an

Adjustment coming into the new structure U and the systems that we play um but you know we’re excited about being going to work with him he’s a bigger body on the right side that I think is is hard to find and and it’s not a rental you

Know we have that that player moving forward he’s young um you know and we’ll have to make sure we continue to sharpen up his game and he’s excited no and uh one of the items that that obviously came out today was with regards to Derek forbert

Um and and we went to to put Derek on on uh LTI are today um and and people should realize that Derrick’s been playing through uh you know two significant injuries um one for sure’s requiring surgery the other one quite possibly could so you know real Kudos an

Testament to the the character of of Derek and and wanting to be that Ultimate Team player and play through some significant you know pain and injuries um but it got to a point where it was it was it was not feasible for him to continue to play

So yep yeah I we have the option to to place them on for more space well you never know because you just you know you’re doing a lot of leg work in terms of what materializes and and you know we’ve been a little challenged in the fact that we have been

Aggressive in in years um with draft Capital um and whether or not we wanted to move uh younger players that have actually come on to our team this year and and added to the depth of our club success of our club you know another challenging thing

You see a lot of players that you know this time of the year that move on and go on have great so we we were we were pinched a little in that regard and we knew that going in but we wanted to make sure we we gave a push to our group now

The last three games wasn’t a reaction in any sense it was just a good indication of of this group wanting to buckle down and hope that we are going to add and believe in them

Following the trade deadline, GM Don Sweeney shared his thoughts: “It was probably a quieter deadline compared to last year. We aimed to address our club’s depth in specific areas and also provide a boost to the group.” The Bruins made some crucial moves, including acquiring forward Pat Maroon from the Minnesota Wild for a conditional late-round draft pick. They also added defenseman Andrew Peeke to their roster, while sending defenseman Jakub Zboril and a 2027 3rd round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

  1. Improved about 5%. Sweeney's best moves will be after the season's over for a genuine Cup push next season. I expect some key additions and it obviously won't be through the draft.

  2. Didn’t have any cap space. Moves aren’t much but may help. Could be SO MUCH WORSE!! They could be the Red Sox!!! That’s lame. No matter what… The Bruins aren’t the Red Sox!
