#hockey #nhl #pittsburghpenguins #carolinahurricanes The 2024 trade deadlines most talked about player, Jake Guentzel will be moving from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Carolina Hurricanes.
The hype for moving Guentz was absurd, so there was no way Dubas would ever meet those expectations. I don't love the return, but it's something. I would have personally gone more for quality over quantity, even if that mean sweetening the pot to get a blue chip prospect and a guaranteed first- maybe by adding Pettersson in a 3 team trade.
Itâs not terrible considering the whole league knew he was not staying in Pittsburgh that koivunen kid is having a fantastic year in the Finnish elite league
If it's 3rd round of the playoffs only, that means the pick is either 29-32 or 49-60 (assuming they are a lock for the playoffs but let's assume they're a lock) which sounds way different from "first round dropping to second round"
The focus was certainly more about NHL ready prospects than the picks. I don't know much about Carolina's prospect pool but we likely went for "lower ranked" prospects because they are currently performing in pro leagues or college and are more NHL ready than others
Dubas has been an unmitigated disaster. Every move he has made from the guys he has resigned, to the free agent signings, to the trades, has absolutely blown up in his face. It's almost as if he is singlehandedly trying to ruin the Pittsburgh Penguins or at least set them back to flounder for about the next decade or so. Sad as a Pens fan to see this old dumpster fire of a team get skated off the ice every night.
It wasn't a fleece. They took the best offer that was on the table. Jake is a rental that they weren't going to be able to re-sign in the off season. They got some decent players in return, that's all Pens fans can ask for at this point. This is a sign, the rebuild is starting. The core 3 of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang will stay with the team until retirement. Everyone else is subject to movement.
Considering that everyone knew Jake wouldn't resign in Pittsburgh, because his team wanted $2M more than the Pens were able to offer, this was a pretty solid return. The prospects are 18, 19, and 21…all about point per game players, where they are currently playing…college hockey, Swedish Liiga, and AHL. They're expecting that we'll see Ponomarev playing in the 'burgh before the end of the season. On another note, after today's game, the Pens have the 8th worst record, in the league and , in their remaining 20 games, play 16 against teams above them in the standings…the Pens could have a top four draft lottery pick, and, with a little luck, a shot at Celebrini, or another franchise player…while Crosby's still playing really well.
Pens fan here. I think draft picks are relatively worthless outside maybe the top 3 in most cases, so I'm glad we didn't go all ga-ga for some playoff team's late first rounder. I'm actually happy we got a bona fide NHLer, 3 decent prospects, and a couple of lottery tickets for a guy who we could've potentially lost for nothing anyway. AND, though I don't have optimism about it or anything, it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that we could go and make an offer to Jake in the offseason and re-sign him. If that were to happen, then I'd say we come out WAY on top on that deal.
This is a business, and we can't keep everyone. I'm genuinely shocked the Pens didn't move more people. I thought for sure there would be teams wanting a few of our other guys. Especially Eller, who has been rock solid all season and is playing his best offensive hockey the last few weeks. He's a proven playoff competitor and a solid depth piece. You're telling me every single playoff team looked at Eller and said "Nah, center depth isn't that important"? Also surprised someone didn't make a run for either Rakell or Smith. Both have had down years, but Rakell is playing way better lately, and Smith has Cup experience. Also a little surprised we didn't have takers for Acciari (cheap depth C with some grit should make any playoff team better) or Ned (this year his play has been at a level that would slot him in as a 1B goalie on most teams… goalie depth has proven vital in cup runs for the last decade or more, and I'd probably say Ned is at least as good if not better than a couple starters heading to the playoffs this year).
Alas, it is what it is. We're probably entering some dark days in Pittsburgh unless miracles start falling out of trees.
I dont mind the trade to be fair, kyle used to draft and sign plenty of players that he could grow the value of. Honestly he remind me of a stock trader. Always trying for the galaxy brain move, which he pulled some good "under the radar" signings and draft picks with his tenure. Idk time will tell on this one.
Ponomarev is a really solid prospect, he'll be a steady middle 6 center in a few years. As a Canes fan, while I think the trade was solid for us, I was sad to lose him.
Sorry Pens fans. Dubas is going to set the Penquins back at least 5 years. You know any ânext Crosbyâ 12 year olds to save the franchise once they hit rock bottom?
Enjoy Dubas guys, greetings from Toronto whose team has been NHL laughing matter for decades. I only cheer for whoever plays better, except I can't cheer for the bad bears, can't stand them being consistently good for over a decade now, might just be jealous though…

Sorry for the late upload on this one guys.
hey eck could you make a vid explaining all this trading jargon? half the time i have no idea what it means
Dubas will certainly screw this up.
Ask Toronto fans.
Dubas is not a good deal maker! trading away young talent is stupid! đ
Kyle dubas is a joke. Guy ruined toronto, now he will ruin the pens !
We didn't leave after 2 rounds last year đ

He's a rental! No, they never got fleeced.
why do people think Dubas is a good GM? he should have been run out of Toronto years ago.
Dubas LLOOOVES his guys đ
I know you make alot of content but you still gotta edit your work bro lol
Itâs not terrible considering the whole league knew he was not staying in Pittsburgh that koivunen kid is having a fantastic year in the Finnish elite league
Sid is outta there!!
Wouldn't be the first time
Considering Guentzel is just coming off of injury and is a rental with zero term on his contract left, his value wasn't as big as it could have been.
As a pens fans this makes me cry

I feel bad for Guentzal. He got taken away from playing with one of the greatest players of our generation to get put in Carolina. Oof!
The focus was certainly more about NHL ready prospects than the picks. I don't know much about Carolina's prospect pool but we likely went for "lower ranked" prospects because they are currently performing in pro leagues or college and are more NHL ready than others

Finally. Something for Leaf fans to be happy about!

No.
Kyle Stoogeous!!!
vasilli ponomarev is nothing to sneeze at really i feel its been glossed over too much
why did this guy repeat the trade like 3 times? never watching another vid again this dude a moron

Yes, yes he did.
Howâs the IN DUBAS WE TUST phrase working out for ya shitsburgh
Too soon to call it a fleecing with prospects and picks involved – it'll take 5 years to see what they turn into.
Pens got Royally fked by Carolina! Getting Dumbas as a GM was an awful move
bunting is awful lmao who would trade for him

I donât understand why leafs fans think dubas is a great GM
He built a failure in Toronto (1 playoff round win?!) and is doing the same in Pittsburgh
Ponomarev is a really solid prospect, he'll be a steady middle 6 center in a few years. As a Canes fan, while I think the trade was solid for us, I was sad to lose him.
Itâs kinda funny looking at the parallels between the Red Sox and Penguins. Getting rid of talent, getting bad returns etc.
Same owner go figure.

Bro I think that youâve literally became The Ray William Johnson of hockey đ
This season turned into a shitshow real quick
Can you review the sabres oilers game? Sabres had to win twice. Overtime goal gets called back after everyone has gone to the dressing rooms
This was a huge mistake. Dubas is a dumbass.
