Akira Schmid’s agent says he senses “little enthusiasm for his client in New Jersey”

Source in German, these are the relevant parts of the article translated:

    > Because Akira Schmid has not been able to confirm his playoff performances in 19 NHL appearances so far this season, his market value is falling and falling and falling. All the more so because New Jersey has a goalie in the team who is better this season, Nico Daws, who is the same age. Agent Gaëtan Voisard no longer expects much more than a million and a one-way contract next season.

    > He had secretly expected that his client could be traded to another organization before the transfer deadline. That was not the case. So for the time being, New Jersey is the only option. And he senses little enthusiasm for his client there.

    > The situation is that Schmid’s rights remain with New Jersey. If the Langnau native receives a so-called “qualifying offer” from the club – it must be ten percent higher than his current gross salary of 867,000 dollars (farm team 70,000 dollars) – then he has to stay. Or perhaps there will be a swap deal with Akira Schmid in the summer after all, as an “encore” so to speak.

Hard to be enthusiastic about much this season but hopefully he turns it around.

I mean, he’s kind of right. The mistake that was made with Schmid, and to an extent Daws, is we relied on Vanecek to be the starter and one of those two to fill in the gaps. Schmid clearly isn’t ready and needs playing time in the AHL. I think he has talent and still has a chance to develop, but after getting called up it’s gutting to get sent back down. He wants a job with regular ice time, and no one wants to give him that.

I mean…put in better results and there’ll be more enthusiasm. I still think Schmid has potential but there are significant weaknesses in his game he needs to work on. Ultimately the team needs a better goalie coach because nothing seems to be working with any of the goalies and that’s a common denominator. The team obviously still believe in him somewhat otherwise they would’ve found a trade for him, they want him to cook a bit more and see if there’s more there like what he showed last season.

dude’s gotta prove himself and work on stuff before the enthusiasm part begins

Any loss of enthusiasm is all on Schmid. He came into a playoff series, down 0-2 and played well enough to contribute to the team winning their first series in a decade. He had *all the good will.*

He couldn’t build on that and it sucks for Vitek, Schmid, and Daws to know that your boss is actively looking for your replacement. But it’s a results-based world out there, and if you can’t hack it, they’re going to look for someone who can.

  7. never should have started that san jose game on back to backs and 3rd in 4 nights, he’s been broken ever since

  8. Flux_resistor

stopping goals would really increase enthusiams.

  9. stop hating on the guy for his agents comments.
I‘m sure he’s aware that people and he himself expected more this season.

Still a big fan of both Schmid and Daws. With luck it’ll be Saros/Ullmark/Shesty(lol), etc and Allen next year with Schimd and Daws resetting in the A.

I get the strain on his market value & instability of not getting long term contracts & how hard that must be. But it the same time…imagine being disappointed with a million dollar contract 😆.

  12. Scaramoosh1

He’s not a big league goalie. The rangers series was a fluke. Neither he nor daws would be considered roster goalies on any playoff team.

  13. His numbers in Albany are also terrible which is all you need to know. I think he’ll be dealt if we ever trade for a goalie.

  14. DontDraftSmall

He needed to play better. Had an off season but I am sure will get more opportunities

  15. Well…he shouldn’t be up here in the first place. Z

  16. Schmid is a 23 year old that hasn’t played a full season in the NHL and expected to bail a team out of a nightmare season. All while the defense has been dog shit.

Goalies take time to get good enough if the raw talent isn’t there (He ain’t Carry Price and I wouldn’t expect him to be). He needs significant time in the AHL before management can really make the decision on whether or not he’s in the future plans.

There are certain fans that are expecting a full, NHL starter when it’s not entirely clear whether Schmid or Daws are able to take on that load. But, there are likely some that would rather run him out of town because he ain’t ready. I hope he sticks around and doesn’t take the first opportunity out because a team doesn’t need that reputation, either.

  17. This makes sense. You have to think if the devils do go out and get a true #1, Schmid would be the odd man out and possibly go back the other way in a trade.

    Team X gets: Devils 2024 1st rounder + Schmid.
Devils get: True #1 NHL goaltender.

  18. McRibs2024

Some of that is on his own performance. Sure he should have been left to grow in the AHL but he got the call up and didn’t perform.

I was at Game 5 last year when he pitched a shutout and started a “Schmiddy’s better” chant halfway through the third that got real loud. If he played like that goalie this season, we’d be ecstatic. The whole goalie situation as a whole is a mess. He may get it together and become the goalie of the future, and we be ecstatic. For now, there’s “little enthusiam” for much of anything in Jersey this season, especially in net.

  20. nostradamefrus

How many squids are necessary to restore his confidence? I can oblige

  21. jimmycap123

Stopping the puck would make the fan base & management more enthusiastic about Akira

Schmid isn’t enthused and neither are we, however the Devils traded away VV not Schmid, so there is belief in what he can bring.
