Andrew Cogliano did shoot a broken stick at Mats Zuccarello. Zuccarello was affected by the stick, and the right call to award a penalty shot was made. It’s just a tough sequence all around.
The responsibility is on Cogliano to not 'just do what you would normally do'. instead of swiping his stick along the ice to get in the lane, he needs to lift the blade of his stick over the one on the ice – in other words, he needs to avoid the stick on the ice.

You can't just do what you would have done if there is a stick in the way, you see the stick you adapt.

Not to mention the 2 handed slash and hook..
If you lift your stick an inch, you would clear the stick on the ground 🤦
