Despite jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead and looking poised to cruise to a victory, the next 40 minutes were among some of the worst the Flyers have played all year.
Defensive breakdowns, penalties, turnovers, and a complete inability to send or receive a pass all killed Philly on Friday night in the nation’s capital. Alex Ovechkin opened up the Caps’ scoring to cut the Flyers lead to 2-1, and it was all Washington from there, as they scored 5 straight to go up 5-2 on Philadelphia.
Along the way Bobby Brink and Olle Lycksell got benched, Sean Couturier saw himself moved back into the top-9, and John Tortorella was not the least bit happy pretty much whenever the camera cut to him. I’ve been saying it all season that the Flyers don’t even know how to rebuild. I’ve never seen an organization send so many mix signals and can’t commit to a plan.
Tortorella is not the right coach for a rebuild. He’s benching every young player for a season that means ABSOLUTELY nothing in the long run. Yes, it would be nice to make the playoffs, but this is a rebuild. The second they drafted Michkov, they were saying that this team will be ready to really compete in 2026. But we have a coach that is more worried about making the playoffs this year then going with the young guys and dealing with growing pains. If they balk at trading Seeler, Laughton and Walker, it will reinforce why this team has not won a Cup for 49 years. If you are going to rebuild, you can’t have it both ways.
Brink is a scorer. We need him out there. I get it, torts wants better D. But we need scorers.
Ovi’s dad passed away toward the end of last season and since then there’s been a noticeable fog hanging over him He’s still getting the same opportunities he always does just slightly off on the finish. I think he got what he needed to snap out of it during the all-star break because he’s been back to his typical pace, moving a lot better, etc pretty much since. I think he gets to 25-30 this year and next back to 40+
