The New York Islanders Ended Their Losing Streak In Convincing Fashion Before Starting Another

The New York Islanders had a great game on Saturday to end their losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets and then played poorly again on Sunday, losing to the New Jersey Devils 4-0.

We break down both games including our hero and goat of the game and discuss the team’s overall inconsistent play.

Plus, we analyze whether captain Anders Lee will be suspended after his knee on knee hit in Sunday’s game that got him a 5:00 major and a game misconduct.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. fkn pathetic. Isles blew their wad against road weary jets. btw did anyone notice isles outshot jets 24-8 at one point yet got outshot for game? Lucky they got that big lead early. And I saw a stat that said isles are a good gf ga team on + side first period then the get worse last two periods – gf ga. This tells us isles can't keep up pace for game-run out of fuel in second period. Had 30 something shots on nj and still couldn't score showing true lack of scorers. Isles teased with win over jets. Now back to playoff pretenders for isles as caps back in 8th and nj now a pt. behind as both win. Now 1-7 last 8 shut out three times. Do you see the problems louzer? So tired of this shitshow. Isles just don't have it. Punt the season away and take the draft positioning.

  2. Unlike some, I was never fooled into thinking the Islanders were going to make the playoffs this season. That 6 game winning streak made it interesting, but I knew it wasn't sustainable with this mix of players. Lou, if he's still in charge, should have a fire sale at the draft and continue it throughout the summer. This team cannot look the same next season! BTW, where is the Sorokin from last season? I think he's AWOL.

  3. Gil, I'm an "everydayer" and enjoy your podcasts, but sometimes it seems to me (just my opinion) that you try too hard to not be critical of the team, especially when they win. Case in point, their 6-3 victory over Winnipeg. The Jets began their NYC road trip with a 4-2 win over the rags. I feel that was a statement game for them. I believe the Jets haven't won a game since that MSG victory. The Devils beat them 4-1 and then we beat them too, and tonight Washington shut them out 3-0. Suffice it to say, perhaps our victory over the Jets was a byproduct of the Jets taking their foot off the accelerator and our team taking advantage of that fact. At least that is how I see it, after 71 games, this club is woefully inconsistent and will not make the playoffs this season. Sorry for being verbose! Hope for changes for next season.

  4. You said it on a podcast podcast a couple of weeks ago and I've been saying it since November, this team needs a heart transplant. I put no stock into yesterday's game versus Winnipeg as their response today against the Devils was totally predictable. These long-term contracts to aging players have sunk this team this year and into the near future. It's going to be a long while before we ever see the conference finals again.

  5. Great show Gil and it’s the same ole thing with the isles with the exception of Lee. Gotta disagree with you, the knee was intentional and this was the 2nd time he’s done it this season ! I see him getting 3-5 games, he got lucky the 1st time he did it and he won’t be so lucky this time .

  6. isles should just keep the cap room this off season. then 21 will be gone. dump lee and sign draisital ufa after next season. no way is draisital re-signing with oil. big leon up front for free. keep next two firsts top 10 picks and presto isles could be good with new gm and leon who can score on pp. aww who am i kidding just rambling…

  7. for the first time in a long time…like capuano days…I don't even like this team . Lou has to go already or the "new" owners are going to really really feel it in their pocket book.. we need a full rebuild. I don't even want to hear about we have a good core…we don't .. save Dobson , Barzal and horvat and get rid of literally everyone that you possibly can get something for. tank the season and at least get a top ten draft pick out of the season whatever that is worth. next year will be painful no matter what but in two we have 30 mil cap space. would love to see what another gm can do with that…bring up ishkakov, Dufour and whoever else and let's take a look

  8. Next year they need to eliminate the back-back games on the islanders schedule. They can't handle it and they're too tired and I don't blame them. I'm not a fan of it.

  9. This is the longest death scene I've ever seen. Being an Islander fan is like riding a roller coaster….drunk, after eating rancid pork. You get a thrill, feel dizzy and then puke. Get a thrill….

  10. GM Gil. Was I watching The Kansas City Chiefs? The Dobson collision which took out 2 other Isles leaving Jack Hughes against a poorly playing Sorokin and another goal summed up the season pretty well. The watching public needed no more than this incident to show how far from elite the Isles D is generally and Dobson specifically. The team really only has a couple of players who should be retained and the rest traded or put on waivers. The Lee penalty should result in a suspension and was flat out dangerous.

  11. Good 🌄 Gil, how are you? The Islanders looked great against Winnipeg on Saturday, but then, GET OUT THE NEOSPORIN THEY GOT BURNED BY THE 👿. They looked great, they may even have fixed it so they couldn't catch Dallas for first place. Then, they straight up cracked against The 👿 yesterday. I think they're in FL tomorrow, and THEY NEED TO BE PREPARED, OR THEY'LL GOING TO GE MAULED. Hero, COMMUNITY EFFORT, GOAT NO COMMUNITY EFFORT. Sunday's game what happened to them, they not only lost, BUT THEY GOT ROASTED ALIVE AT 🏡, WHICH WAS EVEN WORSE. 3 Islanders collided, something that hasn't happened since 1973, their first year of existence. Hero, Ilya Sorokin for shutting out the 👿 until late in the first period. 🐐, COMMUNITY EFFORT AGAIN. What did Anders Lee to do to get a game misconduct? and will he get fined and suspended for what he did. Oh , Gil, if you want to ⌚ The Islanders play a game from happier times, go to YouTube, and go Islander Pride, and click on 12/23/1978, or I call it The Night Before Christmas 🤶, when Trots ate The Rangers Alive with an 8 point night, or any othe fun night from back in the day for that matter. HAPPY 🎂, PAT PRICE. I remember him playing for MN when they made played against The Islanders in 81. I remember that game he helped set up 3 goals that might. Hear from the tomorrow, Gil remember go to YouTube to ser a blast from The Islanders past, and LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

  12. Good morning team. Gil, excellent show, as always. To me, yesterday's game was a version of the Keystone Cops, and the inability for the officials to call an even game. What do we do for the rest of the season? There are some extremely difficult games coming up. I'm not going to count them out until they are officially eliminated, and it's not looking so good. Let's be patient, and watch how the rest of the season unfolds. Everyone have a great day. See you all tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  13. I haven't been watching post game coverage at all but in any coverage I see I have not heard anyone ask any player a tough question about what they think or can explain about their inconsistent play. I would like to see their feet put to the fire. I almost would love to see a town hall type razing of the boys. WTF! This team is too accepting of "not good enough". I think if most fans saw some angst or real remorse in some way we could maybe let some of the anger go (maybe this is just me projecting). Maybe turn it on Lou more (is this possible?). Being tired on a back to back is one thing but looking and playing lost is another. I just don't get it and am no closer to an answer. I turned game off at 3-0. I watch every puck drop and then bail when it gets ugly.

  14. Maybe there content with having reached the conf. Finals twice, you keep even good friends together long enough things can go sour and in a bad way..

  15. This group if I am correct is the 2nd oldest team in Hockey. Like you always say Gil, This team has to get younger and faster. Thanks again for the great content. Go Islanders!

  16. The Boys are done they went home Sunday night and planned their summer vacation, let the young kids up and get some ice time, on point thank you Gil

  17. You know me, I’m not going to complain about players and contracts but I do complain about how they play and when we lose. I thought we had beaten a really good team in the Winnipeg Jets (they are) but they are going through their down swoon right now (as every team does) in an 82-game season. I watched the Devils against Ottawa because I was bored to death. So I decided to do a little pre-scouting myself Saturday night and watched the New Jersey game (DVR) and everything I told Stu I thought 💭 we needed to do, to beat New Jersey. They did the exact opposite (as usual) and we lost to their backup goalie who was 0-8-1 (I know he’s beaten Isles like 5-6 times in a row) that’s why he was playing yesterday, plus Jake Allen seriously needed a game off. So the playoffs are now off the table and we’ll see what major moves are made in the offseason? If they let Lou go? I think they’ll hire in-house, because of Patrick Roy. Who isn’t going anywhere. He signed a 4-year contract so he’s gonna be around for a while, and I like it, because I think he’s a good HC who learned a tremendous amount about being a head coach by coaching in the Juniors.
