Looking Back at The Trade Deadline in Retrospect…Did The Devils Make The Right Moves?

The trade deadline was a few weeks ago, but the New Jersey Devils are still feeling its impact. They were essentially sellers at the deadline, but it seems as some of their additions are working out. It was sad to see somebody like Tyler Toffoli leave, but it was the correct business decision. The Devils’ playoff chances are still unlikely, but at least they have a fighting chance.

  1. Yet to be determined. It appears for the moment their goalie situation is better… but last year we had no such concerns. We lost one of our gritty forwards, team still lacks that trait which is needed for the playoffs.

  2. im not sure fitzy should be fired yet, yes he swung a missed on some sketchy goal tending and refused to see signs of this that were plain as day to everyone that actually watched the team play, but what i gauge performance of not only players but management and really anything in life on is not how few mistakes you make along the way but how you learn from those mistakes, nobody is perfect in this world and fitzy is no different and made a mistake and he knows it and openly stated he did so, he has next season to right the ship, and i think he will. so far he has done everything he has said that he would do to try and fix things, got us assets to use in the offseason cleared some cap space to afford a larger contract goalie and acquired us a veteran goalie to finish out this season. he has one more box to check in his list of things he said he was going to do but that will most likely happen on the day of the draft, if by then the devils are still without a #1 goalie, id say his tenure as the devils GM could be over

  3. Devils are a rudderless ship right now. Hard to tell what they are doing. Half the time they seem woefully unprepared.

  4. All I’m gunna say is, if the devils make the playoffs if it’s 3rd in the metro or 2nd wild card. They will knock off whoever they play round 1

  5. Holtz can fill Toffoli's roll for much cheaper. Toffoli's salary can go towards a defensive defenseman.

  6. I think fans and media were over inflating our chances this year to a degree. That being said, Id say they under performed in that lindy couldnt create any consistency. The loses to ducks, ottawa, sharks etc are proof of that. (Back to backs games or not).

I think lindy had struggled to get the team to that maturation even during the success last year. Many late starts and come back wins. Not sustainable for longterm growth or success.

First off, id say Fitz should have given The HC job to someone else even before potentially addressing goaltending. I do think with a better coach and a different system, the defensive problems would have shielded vitek and daws this year. I see what Burnette is doing in Nashville and it is a style of hockey the devils could play.

Second, i think rolling the dice with the young defensive core after losing severson and graves was troublesome. And it also bleeds into my first point. Maybe a veteran D man or two could have worked better within Lindy’s system. Obviously injuries have plagued this season but siegs and marino also took a step back for some reason. I dont think miller or smith were the answer. Those were bigger shoes.

Third is goaltending. Grabbing kaapo or allen earlier in the season would have been ideal. The wait and see of it all was annoying.

Finally, I think his announcement of Lindy’s firing was way too emotional. This is a business and these things happen. I know Lindy would get that. I see Fitz trying to cushion the blow because the players obviously loved Lindy but we wanna see some winning culture developed here. Wait and see isn’t always good enough.

Id like to see our players and our GM have more of a killer instinct

  7. Nobody’s talking about filling McLeod’s spot. We’re missing the depth he brought as a solid bottom 6 center while being a stud in the face-off circle. Checking the stats on the NHL app and he’s still listed at #1 in face-offs at 65%! That’s huge! We need more of that, minus the allegations………

  8. I don't know why people want this #1 top end goalie to be strapped by another huge contract that will bury us if it doesn't work out. The two new goalies are playing as good as a number 1. Spread out the money to improve the defense and build depth in the bottom six.
