Andrew Peeke In, Johnny Beecher Up, Remembering 2011 Bruins-Habs Playoff Series

The Boston Bruins are battling some illness as they prepare to take on the Canadians in Montreal tonight and we’re reminiscing about how sick that 2011 Playoff round was between them that really set up this era of Champions that we are celebrating here in the Centennial let’s get into it on a brand

New episode of Locked on Boston Bruins you’re locked on Bruins your daily podcast on the Boston Bruins part of the locked on podcast Network your team every Day what is up Bruins fans and welcome back to the locked on Boston Bruins podcast I’m your host Ian McLaren and this is a Daily Show where we discuss all things spoked be today is Thursday March 14th and I want to thank you so so much for making lockdown Bruins part of

Your daily routine free and available on your favorite podcast app and on YouTube part of the locked on podcast Network your favorite team every single day please go ahead and hit that subscribe button if you have not already so that each new episode will be automatically

Added to your feeds for you to download listen and enjoy if you’re on social media you can find the podcast at locked NHL Bruins and you can find me my hockey thoughts and dad jokes at ianc McLaren all right the Boston Bruins uh some illness going through the locker

Room as both James Van Reams DIY and Matt grizzli missed practice on Wednesday due to illness grizzli did not travel to Montreal that’s how serious it was for him van rsdg did make the trip we’ll see if he is in the lineup tonight in the event that he can’t go

Johnny beer was recalled on an emergency basis and he was talking on Wednesday about the fact that he started with Boston was sent down about halfway through the season wasn’t super happy about it I don’t think he said it was just part of the business nobody wants to leave their

Teammates that they’re with for the first half of the year but some good can come of it he had some great buddies on the team in Providence the coaching staff is amazing and he was able to kind of get back to his game maybe the Bruins

Thought he hit a bit of a wall needed to get some more confidence gets uh some different opportunities and in different situations more ozone draws than he was used to some power play time for the Bruins part Jim Montgomery said all they heard was that he kept getting better and better kept showing

That he’s fighting for a spot which is why he was recalled here in an emergency situation now for me I’ve been saying since the trade deadline that I would love to see beater up on a permanent BAS basis as the fourth line center for the Boston Bruins because he ranks second on

The team this season in faceoffs and that is an area where the Bruins have struggled this season he’s got a I think almost 54% success rate Pavo zaka 54.2 and I think beer in the playoffs you need those guys who are reliable in the dots we’ve seen all season long Bruins failing to

Win Key faceoffs failing to clear the Zone it’s come back to bite them in late game situations where they’ve given up leads and yeah dropped points because of this key area of the game now again this is just an emergency recall if van rdik is able to suit up perhaps beer won’t even

Play for the Bruins he’ll be sent back for me I would send brazzo back and keep beater up with bfist and maroon loo um shuffling in and out as the Wingers on that line one guy we know who will be in the lineup tonight is Andrew Peak grizzli

Out so Peak will be in making his Bruins debut after being acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets last Friday he’s eager to get into game action he’s excited to make his Deb for the Bruins in Montreal what a dream that is to suit up put on the spoked be and play her

First game in Montreal and you know he said he’s watched Bruins Canadians matchups for a long time no matter who’s playing at The Bell Center it’s a pretty special place this is a guy who is born in Florida he he sees how special this place is playing for the Bruins against

Them is going to juice it up a little bit more he said there’s been a couple tweet and adjustments coming over from the Blue Jackets to playing under Jim Montgomery there’s only one practice under his belt but um he said there are some similarities he’s picking up things

New every day and that’s all you can ask for uh Jim Montgomery said you know Peak doesn’t know the complete structure they shown us a video but he has to go out and apply it the good thing is having talked to him there are some similarities between the way they played

In Columbus and the way we play obviously the Bruins were able to do it much more successfully uh he’s going to play on his toes bring some physicality some Mobility on the back end and uh I for one I’m very excited to see Andrew peak in the lineup tonight for the Bruins and

See yeah obviously Don Sweeney and management see something in him that was worth uh flipping a first round pick in yobs Boral whose time with the organization was pretty much done as well as a pick for a guy who’s under contract for two more seasons so if this doesn’t work out

Then the Bruins are kind of stuck with this guy 2.75 million over the next two seasons Beyond this one so it’s in the best interest of the player and the team for this to work out and if it does the Bruins have an internal replacement for Derek forbort who’s set to become an

Unrestrictive free agent and who is very banged up uh penalty killer shot blocker hit thrower with some Mobility it all sounds great on on paper and in theory but we need to see it in practice uh in order to make a determination of how well he

Will fit in give him a few games to settle in it’s always tough coming over to a new team new system especially for defenseman uh and uh hopefully he’s out there throwing a couple hits and quickly endear himself to Boston Bruins fans Bruins Canadians tonight and I can’t help thinking about

The 2011 series the Bruins posted on Twitter this morning you know what are your some some of your favorite memories from that series or from that rivalry and that was the first thing that jumped out to me so we’re going to just uh quickly go over that series once again

Google Play or App Store and use code locked on NHL thank you so much once again for making locked on Bruins part of your daily routine free and available on your favorite podcast app and on YouTube and as you know lockon has launched the first ever National Sports 247 streaming

Channel called locked on sports today it’s available on YouTube and the free Amazon Fire TV channels app Baseball fans mark your calendars for March 20th 7 PM Eastern for the best MLB season preview coming exclusively to lock on sports today local insights from local experts on lockon podcast Network find

It on March 20th at 7 pm. Eastern on lock on sports today so the Bruins recently celebrated the Champions era which was 2001 to the present and of course the Pinnacle of that was the 2011 Stanley Cup Championship That season it was very possible that they didn’t even get out

Of the first round because of a crazy series with the Montreal Canadians who they play tonight now the Bruins entered the playoffs as the third seed in the East after winning the Northeast division remember it used to be the six divisions the division winners were ranked one two3 the Canadians were sixth

They finished with 96 points and uh won the tiebreaker over Buffalo so one of the greatest rivalries in Pro Sports it was the 33rd meeting of these teams in the postseason most frequent playoff series in NHL history to that point um Boston had beaten Montreal on route to winning the championship only once

Before and that was back in 1929 they had played in 2009 with which ended with Boston sweeping Montreal but of course that run was ended by the Carolina Hurricanes quite a few series between these teams in the early ODS to be uh to be fair there was the one uh just before the

Lockout that was crazy as well but this season heading into this playoff matchup was insane between the Bruins Montreal had won four of six meetings uh there was a game in February that featured six fights a goalie fight 187 penalty minutes the Bruin won that one 86 there

Was a game in March where the Canadians won but that was the infamous zido charara on Max pater ready incident resulting in an injury that ended pater season uh Char was not suspended but the Montreal police opened a criminal investigation into the incident uh which was insane so losing Patti you

Know that certainly hinder the Canadians in the playoffs as well now once this series got going the Bruins lost their first two games at home which is for me I remember just being devastated so much hope for this team and you’re down two nothing in the

First round losing two games at home so it’s a now you have to win four of the next five with three of those games being played in Montreal uh but the Bruins uh came back in this one as we all know in game four so the Bruins won uh game

Number three by a score of 4-2 giving them some life gave them some hope but in game four the Canadians went up three to one but they could not take advantage as Boston won 5-4 in overtime thanks to former Canadian Michael Ryder in game five Michael Ryder had

That insane glove save wow Tim Thomas was out of position that game went to double overtime which was won by Nathan Horton uh so at that point the series was 3-2 in favor of the Bruins they lost the first two games one games three four and five but then of course nothing is

Ever easy Montreal scored twice on a five on3 power play and won the game two to one this series of course was also the um Infamous glove malfunction for Andrew ference game seven of course had to go to overtime it was Nathan Horton who scored to give the Bruins a 4-3 win and

Send them to the second round of the play off S Boston became the first team to win a seven game postseason series despite being held scoreless on the power play don’t forget that they did not score a goal on the power play despite adding Thomas Cabret before the

Trade deadline in an attempt to help boost the power play um just a crazy crazy series Montreal’s first game loss seven loss since 1994 and that was a defining series for the Boston Bruins of course they went on to sweep the Philadelphia Flyers avenging the uh reverse sweep from the year

Before the series against Tampa was no less uh what do you want to say uh anxiety inducing Tempa won game one Boston won game two it went back and forth back back and forth until Boston was able to get the one- nothing win at home in game

Seven and then we all know what happened in the uh in the finals that year but that Series against the Canadians just just insane and um I shudder to think about what would have happened if Boston had not been able to come back from that you had the reverse sweep the year before

You have the um two nothing series lead if they don’t win that who knows what comes of this core for the Boston Bruins uh just just pretty crazy indeed um again I look back to the uh series earlier in the 2000s 2002 the Bruins losing in 2004

After having a 3-1 series lead the first time that Canadians had won a series in seven games after trailing 3-1 um just some great matchups between these two teams over the years especially in the 21st century and I remember that you you know B Montreal had won in

2002 2004 2008 the ruins won in 2009 so this series in um 2011 could have gone either way it wasn’t the last time they played they played of course again in 2013 and the Bruins won that one in seven games as well on route to the um Stanley Cup Championship that they

Lost to Chicago just an incredible series then as well fortunately the Canadian well depending on how you look at it the Canadians have fallen off since then but they do pose a problem for the Boston Bruins tonight and we’ll discuss why here coming up as the podcast

Continues did you know that even if you have a 401k for retirement you can still have an IRA Robin Hood has the only Ira that gives you a 3% boost on every dollar you contribute when you subscribe to Robin Hood gold right now through April 30th Robin Hood is boosting every

Single dollar you transfer in from other retirement accounts with a 3% match that’s right no cap on the 3% match Robin Hood gold gets you the most for your retirement thanks to their Ira with a 3% match it’s good through April 30th get started at robinhood.com booost subscription fees do apply claim

As of q1 2024 validated by radius Global Market Research invest does involve risk including loss limitations apply to IRAs and 401ks 3% match requires Robin Hood gold for one year from the date of the first 3% match must keep Robin Hood Ira for five years 3% match on transfers is

Subject to spefic specific terms and conditions the IRA is available to us customers in good standing and Robin Hood Financial LLC is a registered broker dealer Bruins Canadians in Montreal tonight and here’s the reason why the Canadians are not an easy out at this point because they have a pretty pretty

Pretty good first line developing in OST Cole Coffield and Nick Suzuki and while the Canadians are destined for the draft lottery that line can score on you any given night and Patrice Bon even recently hyped up Nick Suzuki it’s a guy that is regularly compared to Patrice

Bon because of his strong two-way game um in a recent interview with BPM Sports on Wednesday berson said he loves Suzuki’s attention to detail his two-way game his offensive Talent people are taking notice of his goals and his production but he’s so efficient and he makes his teammates

Better um even Ryan O’Reilly recently praised Nick Suzuki saying he’s one of the players around the league that he loves to watch an incredible player um similar to Patrice berson Andie Kopitar uh he’s got extreme hockey IQ and he’s just so intelligent I have a soft spot for Suzuki because he was part

Of the 2019 gal storm team that won the OHL Championship and again he’s a GU to keep an eye on for the Canadians but this is a very winnable game for the Bruins Montreal’s three five and two over their past 10 uh they’ve lost two of their

Past three the one win was over Columbus so you know not necessarily uh anything to be super proud of Suzuki’s got 61 points in 65 games Coffield with 52 points in 65 games and Sosi cominging on uh really developing properly into a solid Winger as the first round pick our first

Overall pick uh last year he’s got 14 goals 20 points for for 20 assists I should say for 34 points in 65 games Canadians 27th ranked offense 26th ranked defense 23rd ranked power play 27th ranked penalty kill again this is a very winnable game for the Bruins Jake

Allen is out uh he was traded to New Jersey prior to the deadline looks as though it’ll be Sam monmo in net and he can steal some games every now and again he’s got a 904 save percentage uh if the Bruins stick to their rotation it’ll be

Lenus allar in net for them tonight Bruins 42 and four coming off that pretty bad loss to St Louis but that was on the heels of two wins against Toronto one against Pittsburgh and the overtime loss to Edmonton over their last five pav zaka is on a heater five goals in

The last five games eight points total to lead the team in scor over the past five games so look for him to keep things going tonight in Montreal Andrew Peak making his debut uh the Bruins are skating this morning at 11:30 it’s an optional so may not get an

Indication of uh who will be necessarily available they’ll travel back after this one to uh presumably skate practice tomorrow and get ready for a Saturday game against uh the Philadelphia Flyers which uh is always fun as well we’ll preview that one on tomorrow’s podcast we will recap whatever happens

Tonight and bring you all the latest on the black and gold because that’s what we’re all about here on the locked on Boston Bruins podcast your favorite team every single day um oh let’s talk about this for one moment there is a brand new oh maybe we’ll save this for tomorrow some notes

About Lena omark at the deadline from Um Elliot Freeman of sportset talking about allmark um at the trade deadline we’ll talk about this tomorrow it deserves more of a um more of a chat and uh then we’ll throw in here at the end of a podcast thank you for the kind words about uh

About my mom and uh please send Positive Vibes her way in Ottawa and um yeah thanks so much for all the support friends we’ll talk to you again here tomorrow on lock on Boston Bruins part of the locked on podcast Network your favorite team every single day

The Boston Bruins are in Montreal to take on the Canadiens, and Andrew Peeke will make his black and gold debut with Matt Grzelyck out due to illness.

James van Riemsdyk is also under the weather, prompting the emergency recall of Johnny Beecher. He should stay up, in the opinion of this podcast.

In honour of this rivalry and the Bruins’ centennial, we’re looking back at the pivotal 2011 first round playioff series that led to the Bruins’ Cup win.

Plus, a preview of tonight’s game.

  1. Bruins never played Montreal in 2013, you probably mean Toronto. they did lose to Montreal in 2014 in the second round.
