When will the ‘youth movement’ of Marco Kasper, Carter Mazur and other prospects arrive?

The Detroit Red Wings have one of the deepest prospect pools in the NHL with guys like Cossa, Kasper, Johansson, Mazur and Danielson. Despite this, only 3 Yzerman draft picks are on the roster, and they are 6th oldest team in the NHL. At what point will there be a youth movement on Detroit’s roster? #LGRW

  1. That's been my biggest complaint about the #yzerplan. Steve's prospect management has been terrible imo. Doesn't help his coaching hires all prove to impede the youth movement as well.

  2. It is funny to read all these comments questioning Yzerman’s roster management and long term plan

Like Scotty said, the team is doing better and better over the last 4 seasons, and it is already a playoffs bubble team. The only way to go is up.

Patience and let the man cook. I would trust the best player that this franchise ever had, and one of the best GMs in the league who has proven he has built a cup winning roster and culture in Tampa.

Anything else is just beer talk.

  3. The official youth movement begins at the start of the 2025-2026 season.

At the start of 2024-2025 season:
    Locks: Edvidsson, (Berggren?)

Competing – Dark Horse: Kasper, Danielson, Mazur, Johansson, (ASP?), Cossa

At the start of the 2025-2026 season:
Locks: Kasper, Danielson, Mazur, ASP, Soderblom, Johansson, Cossa?

Competing – Dark Horse: Buchelnikov, Hanas, Wallinder, Tuomisto, Lombardi

  4. Wings need to bring up 2 or 3 each year to keep team young. Otherwise you have older, slower, over the hill guys whose best years are behind them and still paying them $ that could be used differently. LGRW 🏒

  5. I definitely think bringing up some youngsters makes sense. Just look at the upgrade we got recently in Simon Edvinsson! With how well Cossa has done, why not give him a game or two?

  6. What player have the Redwings drafted that will replace Larkin as a number 1 center? I don't see one. I see a number of second or third line centers.

  7. Bring up the youth next season anyway this season ends. I really hope Kane sticks around. I think that superstar talent is good for the youngins.

  8. One or two rookies that are 100% ready would be fine. Berggren will either be up or traded in the off season. I think Danielson is a dark horse to make the team next year. Sandin-Pellikka, Cossa and Kasper are a possibilities for 25-26. Hard to say with the depth prospects like Johansson Lombardi, and Mazur.

  9. If they resign Kane, Perron and Valeno, they probably only have 2-4 million in cap space and only one open roster spot. Definitely need to clear some people out or at least bring back Austin. Bregs and AJ I don't think are waiver eligible either so they need to be on the team or traded. Would suck, but may need to cut someone and eat the cap hit.

  10. Detroit Red Wings future line-up depth chart: 2028 est:

    Mazur Larkin Raymond
    Soderblom Danielson Buchelnikov
    Hanas Kasper Lombardi
    Finnie N.D. Nilsson Neiderbach
    James, Savage

    Edvidsson Seider
    Wallinder ASP
    Buium Gibson
    A. Johansson
    Tuomisto

    Cossa
    Augustine

  11. Newsy has to go. He has mishandled the goalie situation all season long. He benched Justin Holl but keeps Petry in the lineup?
    Time for a change.

  12. You guys are so much better than most of the "locked On" crews from other teams around the league, and it's not even close. I tried to watch the Flyers locked on cast, and I made it five minutes. How can you make a podcast about Torts boring? anyways, keep up the great work.

  13. its not an inherent guarantee that veterans will play well either; copp, petry, holl, maata, sprong, chariot, reimer. all of these guys are entirely unreliable, uneven and uninspiring…bring up the kids please…no more sh9t retreads

  14. Watched the 2008 playoffs again. Just wow! we had so much talent. Hard to imagine getting to that point again

  15. After this year Steve doesn't have any excuses because he'll have plenty of cap space and plenty of picks. If we're not firmly in the playoffs next year, we really need to start asking questions.

  16. Need to remember hockey is a business and you might want to shift your worldview to consider prospects as assets to be invested in many different ways. The Griffins are a legitimate asset to the red wing organization. trades are made with assets. To make a long run you need to have a blend. You need to assure that the pipeline is a long one. You also need to understand team chemistry and culture. A focus on a youth movement could be counterproductive at times. A players ceiling needs to be understood in the context of when you believe (based on the eye test) they can achieve that level of consistent play.

  17. If there’s anything we can count on it’s that Stevie wants to win, and if this looks like the best bet that’s what he’ll do (so long as it doesn’t negatively effect the players long term)

  18. Send Holl and a 4th rounder to the Yotes for a 7th round pick or future considerations, don’t resign Ghost, send Maatta away for 6th rounder and there’s room for one more defenseman and there’s plenty of room for 2 more forwards if they’re good enough

  19. I think Yzerman made a shift in the Yzerplan after getting shafted by the lottery too many times. So, he made the decision to skip that part of the rebuild and instead started building the main roster around the age of Larkin. I agree with him, I don't think the kids in GR are necessarily the answer. Prospects always get over hyped and end up being Teemu P.

  20. I think Edvinnson, Kasper, and Mazur should be up next season at a minimum. Probably another year+ on Cossa, ASP, and I'm assuming they'll give Danielson a year in the AHL, unless he blows the door down in the prospects tournament/training camp/preseason games.

  21. Yes the Wings have defensive prospects but no young power forwards in the system. How can it be the 5 year of the rebuild and no power forwards in the system? Larkin needs a big strong Burtizzi type winger to run cover for him and the prospect cupboard is bare.

  22. When does it come? When they're more than ready. Yzerman remembers the days of overcooking the prospects in our system. This has always been a cornerstone of the Yzerplan, and if I'm being completely honest, it's the number one reason why I wanted him in our front office.

Is it a bad thing that more aren't in Detroit now? Not necessarily. If you saw how Berggren played when he was in Detroit this season, you can see why we didn't start the year with him. He needs more time to cook. Edvinsson is making rookie mistakes (and appears to be making fewer with every game), but has been one of our better D since getting called up. I think others (like Kasper) would've been given a call-up if there was a need for them once GR clinched.

"The youth movement" will come. Don't force it.

  23. I think we will see a combination of Kasper, Mazur, Johansson up next year. Kasper I think if he wasn’t rusty from recovering from his broken knee cap he coulda made it out of camp. Also I think if I recall Lalonde at beginning of the year said Mazur had a great chance to make the team if he didn’t get hurt just before camp

  24. The answer is easy: what prospects are in the same level of Seider and Raymond when they make the roster? I don´t see any. Maybe in two years we can have Kasper, Mazur, Danielson and ASP.

Look at Edvinsson! He is miles better than last season when many of us wanted him making the roster.

  25. As Brian stated, there is a logjam on the left side of the defense. Yes, you can trade one or more prospects but also a trade of one of the existing defensemen should be considered, including Maata, Charott & even Waldman . All three of these players are very solid esp. Waldman but they might be able to get a top 3 or 6 winger. Charoot is also a physical player and has teamed up very well with Mo Seider. I am not in favor of trading either Walman or Charott unless the return justifies such a move.
