Linus Ullmark blanks Predators, may have saved the Boston Bruins from themselves

Hey so remember when Don Sweeney reportedly went up to lenus omark and was like uh would you want to maybe go to the Los Angeles Kings and Omar was like nah well thank goodness that happened because Omar has been lights out since the trade deadline and should

Be the game one starter for the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup playoffs you’re locked on Bruins your daily podcast on the Boston Bruins part of the locked on podcast Network your team every Day what is up Bruins fans and welcome back to the locked on Boston Bruins podcast I’m your host Ian McLaren and this is a Daily Show where we discuss all things spoked beat today is Wednesday April 3rd and I want to thank you so much for making lockdown Bruins

For $20 off your first purchase there was a ton of Bruins fans in Nashville last night May hey maybe they used game time to secure their tickets and they witnessed a thre nothing victory for the Boston Bruins over those Predators who had been red hot 162 and two over their

Past 20 games and the Bruins just straight up shut them out thanks to lenus omark and others and we’ll talk about that here in a moment first a quick reminder you can find the podcast on social media at locked NHL Bruins and you can find me my hockey thoughts dad

Jokes ATC McLaren I am a lifelong Bruins fan been hosting this podcast since 2019 covering the Bruins for various outlets for 20 or so years and worked for five years as a full-time hockey news editor for the score and I’ve seen a lot of Bruins scores over the

Years this one was incredibly impressive last night against the national Predator the Bruins posted a shut out against the Predators a team that features Philip forsberg Roman Yosi Ryan O’Reilly these guys have been RedHot over the last couple of months climbing into the Western Conference playoff picture and the

Bruins went in on the road and just kept them off the board for the whole game Boston moved four points ahead of the Florida Panthers because they lost to the Montreal Canadians last night if you can believe it and uh we’ll discuss the cup check later on but Jim

Montgomery credited lenus olar who made it 31 saves his second shut out of the Season calling him spectacular Saros was really to and it was a scoreless game until the third period but for the Bruins Jim Montgomery thought Omar was like an onslaught he

Had to be down in his crou he had to be finding pucks through a lot of traffic a lot of great plays that the Predators were able to make at times and he just straight up made some saves look pretty easy it was a playoff type hockey game

I’ve been talking about that for days now how the Bruins need to get into that play mentality they showed it on Saturday against the Washington Capitals with that penalty kill in overtime and they certainly showed it last night with Charlie Cole breaking the deadlock z z

He gave the Bruins a one- nothing lead at 1318 of the third period beating Soros on a breakaway uh and that was all the offense the Bruins needed because of how good lenus alar was playing at the other end of the ice and Omar is really solidifying himself as

Boston’s game one playoff starter now look it remains to be seen whether or not Jim Montgomery will stick with the rotation in the playoffs that’s been a big point of discussion all season long after he rightfully went with lenus alar to begin the series against the Panthers

Because look he was coming off a vzna worthy season he faltered a bit especially in game five of that series and the Bruins did not adjust quickly enough they deviated from that rotation and just stuck with allmark until well only giving Jeremy San a start in game seven so there’s something to be

Said for perhaps rotating the goenda all season long and into the playoffs but lately allar has been vastly outplaying Jeremy swan in net I referenced the trade headline off the top and the fact that reportedly Don Sweeney had approached allmark and asked him to wait wave his

No trade clause in order to be moved to the Los Angeles Kings now allar well within his rights said thanks but no thanks I want to remain in Boston and since that time he has been lights out he has made six starts for the Bruins since March 8th he’s 4-2 with a

950 save percentage and a 51 goals against average allowing only nine goals on 179 shots over that span Swan on the other hand he’s made five starts he’s three and two but the personal other numbers are vastly in Omar’s favor 858 save percentage for Swan with a 3.37 goals against

Average he’s allowed 17 goals on 120 shots that is a huge difference in save percentage 950 versus 858 and more than double the goals against average 1.51 for allar 3.37 so whether allar perhaps has a bit of a fire under his butt because of that trade at

Or just you know he’s turning it on because it’s that time of year to do so all Mark has clearly set himself apart as the guy who should start in game one if they go odds and evens perhaps or if they just stick withar for a

Couple of games and see what happens I would not fault them at all for that because he has been the better goalie of the two over the past month or so now does that change plans for the summer do they still look perhaps to move allar with Jeremy Swan being due a raise

Or are they questioning whether or not Swan is ready to carry the load fulltime that remains to be seen but for right now alar is the guy and he should be come playoff time but having said that at the earliest sign of trouble put swan in there because you have that luxury of

Having this two-headed monster in net that’s my two cents and we’ll talk more about the Nashville game and who stepped up in this one coming up as the podcast continues baseball season is here and if you’re like me you’ve been looking at picking up some tickets to check out

Against a very good team in the national predators the Bruins were uh on the right side of the shot count last night 3231 um and it was lenus alar who got the better of yuss Saros on the other side of the net or the other side of the ice I

Mentioned Coyle had the short-handed breakaway goal which stood as the gamewinner then you also had uh pava zaka scoring from Danton Heinen and David posto is 19th of the season to give the Bruins a two- nothing lead and then David posto added his 46th goal of

The season on an empty net zaka now only two goals away from his career high which was set last season four points away from uh a career high in points as well two assists away so he could conceivably set new career high for the Bruins in a much elevated role

This season filling in for uh David Cree on that second line now also stepping up last night uh we got to give a mention to to the defense in this one just some fantastic defensive play up and down the ice um leading the way in terms of ice Time

Charlie McAvoy hemp lindol and then Andrew Peak jumping up in there as well he played 19 minutes and 10 seconds and I believe he was credited with five blocked shots just a fantastic game for him and he has only chipped in one assist for the Bruins in nine games since being

Acquired at the deadline but he has been as good as the Bruins could have hoped after a Down Season to begin with the uh with the Columbus Blue Jackets they brought him in knowing that Derek forbort was unlikely to play again this season and with the knowledge that he

Signed for two more years after this one and yet they committed they brought him in and he’s looked pretty good on the third pairing the Bruins were um outshot at five on five last night 2725 shot attempts were 58% in favor of the Predators they had 56.5% of the high danger

Chances but again lenus allmark stepped up huge and the Bruins uh were able to come out with a very important Victory against those Nashville Predators a team that had been RedHot until the last few they’re now on a three-game losing streak thanks to um thanks to the Boston Bruins Carlie

Coyle said these are playoff type games where z00 or low scoring kind of a battle to see which team will break first and that’s what they’ve been talking about in between periods and on the bench there’s always things you can fine-tune throughout the game and they address those overall their game has

Been pretty solid as of late and they figured they get their opportunities if they stuck with it and that’s what happened they played a full 60 Minutes all Mark said for from his vantage point and showed that they don’t get frustrated easily they kept sticking with it they did a great job penalty

Killing couple cut clutch goals from Cole and zaka before uh poso scored that empty net Predators went 0 for four on the power play Roman Yosi saying they just couldn’t really set up it felt like they never really got set the entries they got in but they couldn’t get set

And the Bruins pressured pretty hard Predators were unable to make plays and get set and couldn’t really uh get things going so if credit to the Penalty kill um again you removed Derk forbo that was meant to be one of his strengths um and they’re still able to

Keep Roman Yosi Philip forsburg at Bay much to my suar because I had them both on my fantasy Squad last night and I’m getting tuned in the finals one bit of bad news was Justin brazzo leaving in the first period with an upper body injury uh Jim Montgomery didn’t really

Have an update but he said there will be more important sorry more information on the length of the injury in the coming days meaning well Pat maroon set to come back so that would be a big body that they can plug in on the fourth line um

Jacob Loco took a seat in favor of James man Reams dik so you’d expect lro to come in in the meantime uh but there could be a recall at some point as well if brazzo is out for any length of time so that’s something to keep an eye on

But to bring it back to a positive postu it was his 35th multi-point game of the season the most by a bruan since Adam Oats in 92 93 he had 46 multi-point games that season he’s also up to 46 goals on the season and uh a chance to

Crack 50 here over the remaining what six games of the Season yep the Bruins do only have six games remaining and they’re now level with the Panthers in terms of games played so no games in hand the Bruins have a four-point Advantage for first we’ll discuss uh the cup check and where the

Bruins rank amongst the top five teams in the NHL here as the podcast continues FanDuel let’s talk about FanDuel shall we the best place to make your bets here on all things Sports whether it’s the ongoing March Madness Tournament whether it’s Major League Baseball the NHL the

Hoops till they cut down the net and get in on the action Major League Baseball and the upcoming NHL and NBA playoffs fanduel.com lockon America’s number one sports book cup check time this is where I look at the top five teams around the NHL and assess where the Bruins rank among them

They had been slipping a bit in terms of points and point percentage but they are right back up there in the top five at the moment after beating the pan or sorry beating the Predators last night the Bruins 76 games played 44 17 and5 103 points in a 678 point percentage

That puts them right in third place in terms of well tied for second with the Dallas Stars although Dallas has a game in hand so they’re third in point percentage behind the New York Rangers who were in first the Dallas Stars in second and then ahead of the Carolina

Hurricanes and the Vancouver Canucks and the Bruins will be in Carolina to take on those hurricanes tomorrow night in what will be a huge game and they will have another date with them next week following a game against the Florida Panthers on Saturday so three tough

Games for the Bruins coming up and they will really give us a glimpse of where they stand with respect to some of these top top teams in the NHL I’ve been talking about the underlying numbers all season long and how the Bruins you know not necessarily one of the forces when

It comes to Advanced stats in fact they rank 24th at five on five in terms of shot attempt differential uh which is not great at all uh they are regularly outshot at five on five they rank 23rd in that category when it comes to uh scoring chance differential at five on five the

Bruins ranked 21st uh when it comes to high danger attempts at five on five the Bruins a bit better at 18th but there are teams that are much better in these categories namely Carolina Hurricanes Florida Panthers one two when it comes to um shot attempt differential five on five

Carolina’s number one in terms of scoring chance differential five on five the Panthers are third High danger chances Carolina is second uh and the Panthers a bit further down but you get the idea these teams are very good when it comes to the underlying numbers Boston being kept near the top because

Of their goal attending they have a second ranked 92.9 six save percentage at five on five and their shooting percentage five on five is third ranked as as well and that gives them uh a second ranked PDO where you add up shooting percentage save percentage just behind the Vancouver Canucks and teams

Like the the Hurricanes the Panthers right around 100 Mark which you would expect teams to level off at meaning those are two teams to really keep an eye on come playoff time as are the Rangers in the Eastern Conference so while the Bruins you know they’re only

One point out of first overall I’d put him right up there with those three teams in the east at least in terms of legitimate Stanley Cup contenders the other uh top teams in terms of point percentage right now Carolina Vancouver to round out the top five they’re tied with

Colorado at 667 just ahead of the Florida Panthers those are the seven teams that have clinched playoff spots with Edmonton Toronto and Winnipeg rounding out the top 10 yet to clinch in terms of goal differential the Bruins are a bit further down Dallas leads the way at plus 56 tied with the Hurricanes

Vancouver is at plus 55 tied with the Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers Panthers are at plus 53 those are all the teams above plus 50 goal differentials and of course that’s what hockey is all about scoring more goals in the opposition so those are the teams to

Really keep an eye on now if the Bruins uh if the playoffs started today the Bruins would be in the first in the Atlantic second overall in the East which means they would play the first wild card team and that would be the Tampa Bay Lightning the Rangers would play the

Second one or the yeah the second wild card team which is the Washington Capitals there’s a big difference between those two teams so while we know that first place doesn’t necessarily matter it kind of does this season because the capitals are not the Florida Panthers from last year don’t forget the

Panthers were the president’s Trophy winning team the year before they had some big adjustments in terms of new players coming in but when they caught fire they showed their true potential what they are this year which is an elite team so if the Bruins can somehow jump the

Rangers the Rangers do have a game in hand and they’re a point ahead uh it would be great to get that second wild card spot because between Washington Detroit the Islanders none of these teams seem to want to to jump into the playoffs I had the Charlie lingren on my team was

Hoping for a big win last night against Buffalo they got spanked like six to2 even the penguins are still alive uh they’re three points back of the C capitals with seven games remaining so that second wild card spot would be much more desirable under the old format if you go

One to eight the Bruins would be in line right now to play the Philadelphia Flyers in the third second and third in or sorry third in the Metro 83 points for the Flyers third in the Atlantic 95 points for the Toronto Maple leaes I would really like to at

Least go back to that one versus eight but that’s a discussion uh for the offseason anyways that’s it for today’s episode my friends thank you so much for taking time to uh check out lock down Boston Bruins if you have not subscribed already please do so on your favorite

Podcast app and on YouTube we’ll be back tomorrow to bring you all the latest on the black and gold and preview tomorrow night’s game against the Washington cap what against the Carolina Hurricanes uh please do take care of yourselves take care of each other and we’ll talk to you

Again here on locked on Boston Bruins part of the locked on podcast Network your favorite team every single day bye

Less than a month ago, Linus Ullmark was (reportedly) going to be traded to the Los Angeles Kings before he invoked his no-trade clause. And thank goodness he did, because Ullmark has been lights out over his past handful of starts, widely outplaying Jeremy Swayman.

His latest feat was a shutout of Filip Forsberg, Roman Josi, and the recently red hot Nashville Predators. While there’s an argument to be made for a goalie rotation in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Ullmark is playing like a guy who wants to start Game 1 and not look back.

Plus, a look at who else stood out in the win over the Predators, injury concerns for Justin Brazeau, and a Cup Check! Where the do the Bruins rank among the top 5 teams in the NHL.
