Early offense is enough as Alex Lyon shuts the door on the Buffalo Sabres



The Detroit Red Wings came out hot in the first period, as they put up 3 quick goals from Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, and Dylan Larkin before Buffalo pushed back the rest of the game. But luckily Alex Lyon and Moritz Seider had their back. Lyon allowed just one goal on 38 shots, and Seider blocked 10 himself, to take the league lead in blocked shots. The win (temporarily) puts them back in the wild card. #LGRW

    If Lyon can sustain making saves like he did today, just maybe there's a chance. Wings will still need to change their defense for next season because they have almost none. The Wings roster are not good defensively. You just can't win all the time when your goalie is making 40 saves a night. You gotta help your goalie, eventually. This is where puck control comes in. Wings need to control the puck more than their opponent or they will not progress as a team.

    If ras comes back I'd sit sprong for the rest of the season and just let him know he doesn't fit with this team, he just refuses to back check and is too sporadic offensively for a team that already has enough scoring. Kasper and possibly mazur will be up next year and sprong is too much of a liability defensively, too bad because he has so much potential but refuses to play defense on a team that has no defensive awareness to begin with. Kasper will bring the sand paper they need, and mazur is a sniper who can still be molded into playing 2 way hockey. Sprong just seems stubborn and unwilling to play in the d zone.

    Surprised they picked sider. He had multiple giveaways for no reason. Can't seem to clear the puck. He also touched the puck when they had delayed high stick and we were hemmed in.. He made some bone head plays

    A) I hope Czarnik doesn't turn into another AAAA type of player. B) It feels like Petry is getting the Ericsson the treatment. Is he the weakest link? Yes. No doubt. But he is no pylon.

    Not impressed.. didn't score after the 7 minute mark of the 1st period…and were outplayed and out shot the rest of the game by a not very good buffalo team

    The wings should play Seider the way he is. They ask too much from him. Perhaps they want to lower the new contract.

    Good win, as is any win this time of year when the playoffs are on the line. Not impressed with Fischer's D especially. Lots of hearts but lots of mistakes too. Sprong seems more interested in offense than playing solid D and hustling back to get into passing lanes. D is the difference between the best teams and that next level where Detroit is this year. They can all score.

    Having played beer league my whole life the goalies did not want us trying to block shots from close in because if you missed it screened the goalies. Yes forwards should block shots from the point but get out of the way inside the hash marks. I guess it's different in the pros.

    I'll never understand the concept of trying to sit on a lead for two and half periods. The Wings came out strong and once they had a 3 goal lead they almost completely quit trying to play offense. No forecheck and just spent their time trying to dump the puck from their own zone. That just results in the opposing team regrouping in the neutral zone and continuing their press. The best defense in my opinion would be to forecheck and keep the opposition pinned in their own zone as much as possible.
