I am the first person to condemn ppl when they use their stick as a weapon, but this is a slashing penalty, nothing more. To actually FINE someone for using their stick like this would give you the impression the NHL takes using your stick as a weapon very seriously, right? Except, in the last two weeks, Tom Wilson got a slap on the wrist 6 game suspension for whipping his stick at Gregor's jaw, and Guhle two hand lumberjacked someone as they were skating by FROM THE BENCH – suspended one game, lost less in salary than Kane lost for this run-of-the-mill slashing penalty.

Okay so it's late so maybe I made a mistake but if you are Evander Kane and get paid 5.5M this year and get fined 5000 dollars and you compare it to an average salary for a regular Canadian ( a little less than 70k/year ) that means Kane's fine is the equivalent of about 60 dollars.
