Just watched fascinating episode of “Locked on Sabres.”
How do Sabres make the playoffs? Let more teams in!! Go to play-in rounds for 7-8 seed and 9-10 seed, ala NBA.
Just think all the money Terry can make on more Beef on Weck sales!
Geez – knowing Sabres, they would then come in 11th the year this is implemented.

Why? So we could watch them give up early goals in 4 extra games?
What a stupid idea. Half the league already makes it to the playoffs. Don’t NBA my NHL.
We tried this one year by letting the 5th-12th seeds play the first round and the sabres missed that cutoff by finishing 13th
If we have to wait for the league to expand the playoffs, we don’t deserve the playoffs. We simply just need to be better.
As it stands right now, the Sabres wouldn’t even make an expanded playoffs…
I dont want them to expand the playoffs. It would just feel like we were a charity case because we couldn’t even be an average NHL team.
How do they make the playoffs?
Make it easier???
Perhaps employ a real coaching staff?
Ew
This will happen in the next 5 years, especially if we get two new expansion teams (as it seems likely to happen).
Friedman really bangs the drum on this, but once the owners realize how much extra revenue there is from an expanded play-in, they’ll take it in a heartbeat. His idea was a 2 game series. It potentially gets settled in a shootout, and I’m sure there are people who would cry about that. But the easy solution to the problem is to not finish outside the top-3 in your division.
Oh. We’re here again. April 9th and someone suggests they expand the playoffs. Probably the sign of a mild summer.
It would honestly feel hollow if we made some dumb play-in.
Plus play-ins suck and aren’t good for the game–I’m a Mets fan and wasn’t happy a couple years ago when our regular season meant nothing because we lost a Best of 3 (!) to the Padres
Lowering the bar for bad teams seems like such a pity-play. Keep the streak going, let’s see how far we can go at this point.
In all fairness we haven’t made the playoffs in the past 13 years because we haven’t deserved to. Widening the goal posts doesn’t change that fact, unfortunately. Hell, Philly could still make it this season. Ending the streak with training wheels wouldn’t make Pegula not a jackass or us any closer to winning the cup that is supposedly the reason for our existence.
