The NHL Has An MVP Problem

#nhl #hockey #torontomapleleafs

We take a deeper look at one of the greatest NHL MVP races in recent memory. A full deep dive on Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, Nikita Kucherov & Nathan Mackinnon.

Who do you think will win the NHL Hart Trophy?

  1. The real MVP problem is that the voters never really consider whose actually the most valuable to their team. This is why there is a Richard and Ross trophy.

Out of those listed probably only Kucherov would be a proper nomination and I'll give my reasons why.

The Oilers comeback to playoff relevance has as much or even more to do with the rest of the team actually buying in to playing with some discipline. True of all the top teams of course, but I suspect if McDavid was scoring at a lesser pace they'd still be a playoff team.

Same with Matthews. If he were at 40 or 50 goals they'd still probably be right near where they are.

Same with Mackinnon. The Avs are probably a playoff team even without him.

Shouldn't the real Hart nominations be someone like Sid if the Pens make the playoffs? Pretty sure without him they're right near the basement.

Or, and my canuck bias will come out here, but I think a strong case can be made, Quinn Hughes? Check out the guy's numbers. Not only should he be a lock for the Norris, he should at least be a Hart nominee.

The Norris is a good example why it's messed up. Some ESPN guy said he'd vote for Makar because (at the time) he had 3 more goals than Hughes. Of course this caused and uproar in sensitive Vancouver where every perceived slight (both real and even more so imagined) is dissected to death. But in this case it produces a great local article where the writer showed just how dominant Hughes has been both offensively and defensively and how Makar really isn't even close to him this year in all aspects of the game. (aside from the goals and points). The Norris is supposed to be for the best defenseman right? Not the D man who scored the most. Especially when the race is virtually identical in terms of points only.

The same article makes a great argument for why the 3 Norris finalists should be Hughes, Bouchard, and Jossi and shows how those two also have had stronger years than Makar. The ESPN guy is just thinking Makar is the same as last year and he's close to Hughes and he's got a couple of more goals therefore he must still be the best.

This is the problem. The writers who vote on these things are as lazy as most fans who just look at point totals and the name on the jersey.

  2. Watching this right after Nate goes HAM ( and fast) through the Wild for 4 points tonight, three gorgeous goals! Hard to beat Kuch for the Hart but here’s hoping

  3. Whoever wins it can hold their heads high given the guys they beat to get there. Phenomenal season from these guys.

  4. The mackinnon bias has been here from the start among the nhl and also this channel unfortunately. I simply dont agree hes the frontrunner despite how amazing hes been. If you take away kuch from tampa we'd be in vacation mode a month ago. The hart is for the most important player to his team and by that criteria alone kuch is the frontrunner

  5. I never understood the "most important for his team" part of the Hart trophy. One could argue that Bedard is just as important to the Blackhawks as Kucherov is to the Lightning. Same with Crosby for the Pens. Without Bedard Blackhawks did nothing.

  6. Two guys about to hit 100 assists. Matthews closing to 70 goals.
MacKinnon just doing everything in such a dominant way that it's unbelievable.
Honestly there is no clear choice for a Hart Trophy, whoever they decide to choose, there always will be complaints.
    For me it's Kucherov

  7. The NHL doesn't have an MVP problem. They have a Toronto Maple Leafs fan problem. The Maple Leafs fans are the MAGA of the NHL. The Leafs never deliver because of the toxic media, fans, and attention placed on the team. Austin's NHL debut – scores 4 goals and the Leafs lose 5-4. It's hard to argue the value of a phenomenal performance in a losing effort. If you're just looking at numbers Kucherov has a better case. McJesus with no PCL in his knee isn't a match for Mackinnon. I hate the Avalanche but I'm not blind.

  8. MacKinnon was an absolute animal tonight against the Wild. Scored a hatrick blowing past guys like they were peewees.

  9. Its scary that Team Canada will have so much talent at the Olympics that either McDavid or Mackinnon would be a second line center.

  10. Not really, Kuch is playing in the weakest team of them all and carrying them into the playoffs. The Avs are stacked like the early 80's Oilers. Same with the Leafs, multiple 100+ point producers in the team. McDavid hasn't been quite at the same level as last year so he's out of contention.

  11. If Mattews gets 70 it's over. Assists don't win games, goals do. Plus there's 2 assists per goal. 3 people close to 100 assists means not so rare. Where if Mattews gets 70, no one else even in there 60's.Plus his production on 5 on 5 play. Doesn't cheat the game. Most likely getting nominated for selke. Selke plus rocket means, without a doubt, the heart. Sorry to others but Mattews out performed you every where!

  12. It's should be two horse race really. McKinnon and Matthews. McKinnon edges it out I think. The real issue is scoring close to 70 goals while playing Selke level defense, it's hard to ignore the dominance of Matthews. McKinnnon is more balanced offensively and is more explosive on the rush.

  13. Crosby is the blatant MVP, and it’s not particularly close… But the “MVP” award isn’t a true MVP award so it’ll just be someone who scored a bunch of points on a good team.

  14. Does this mean that there are too many good players in the NHL? Or does it mean that there is no true stand-out player anywhere in the league?

  15. Great breakdown. I hope all 4 of them get something. Hart, Rocket, Art Ross, Ted Lindsey, King Clancy. I don't care what, I just think if any of them didn't get at least some acknowledgement it would be a crime. It is nuts that we get to watch all 4 of them. This season has been great.

  16. there's no way it's not Mac. conjure up whatever copium you must, but it's gonna be Mac.

  17. It’s gonna be kucherov. Leading team stats ~50points without there is any injuries. Like no one else has played example 45 games and have 70points or something like that. Its insane!

  18. What if Sid helps pens to the playoffs?!! He has single handedly saved the pens this season! Not to mention he is the leading points leader in the nhl and is still climbing mt Rushmore of greats at 36! The only player to match Gretzky at 19 straight point per game season! That’s extremely hard to do ! But like most Americans hockey fans have the attention span of a squirrel 🐿️.
