I think of LaPointe more but he signed to Boston of his own free will. Mick deserves it more.

I dunno. I love mick and he will always be on display at LCA in some way or another but I dunno about a jersey retirement.

  3. Strawhaterza

Idk about jersey retirement but maybe some creative kind of hybrid statue that honours both his playing and broadcasting careers. Something like him holding a stick in one hand an a mic in the other.

Not sure I’m going as far as a jersey retirement here and I am a huge Mick fan like pretty much all of us. I’m nearly 40 years old and this man was my childhood and still getting after it today. Something should be done when he retires and I really don’t know what it should be maybe hang his name in the rafters or do something like a compilation statue that blends both his player career with the team and him as an announcer holding a mic. You could even put it in two parts of the arena as to draw you over to a different part of the arena where you have restaurants.

No, but they should absolutely retire his flannel.

  6. MeTieDoughtyWalker

Not jersey, but he should be permanently honored in some way whenever he retires.

  7. He *has* to be honored in *some* permanent way, can’t imagine wings being the same without him.

Jersey is a pretty huge stretch though, but if there’s no other way, at all, to commemorate him, then sure, but only as an absolute last resort. Ideally they’d raise a flannel banner with just “Redmond” in the rafters

  8. RobotFace

No, but they should make it so that whoever has the number has to grow a mustache.

Even if it’s awful wispy nonsense, you want the number then start growin’.

Rafters is for Their on ice performance, and should be reserved for the few special ones. But an statue would be Nice.

  10. It’s been mentioned but a statue, probably of Ken and Mick both, makes more sense. If they were thinkin with their noggins(and wallets) they would collaborate with Atwater or someone to make a “Redmonds ‘Ginger’ Ale” for the arena..

  11. If they’re going to do it, do it while he’s alive. Don’t miss a chance to show appreciation.

  12. I may not have been lucky enough to be a red wings/hockey fan during the golden years of the Wings, but I count my lucky stars I was still early enough to enjoy Mick cause someday there’ll be fans who’ll have never heard the best of the best

In some way he will be memorialized I’m sure

We really need like a team Hall of Fame that will solve all these sorts of questions

  14. kermitthefrog57

His face at center ice instead of a logo

  15. Wolfinstien

No way. number retirements should be for the elite of the elites. Put a microphone in the rafters with M.R. Maybe name the gondola, Mickey Redmond Gondola?

so i think there’s a *bit* more of an argument for it than some people in this thread imply since he was the first red wings player with back-to-back 50+ goal seasons and was on track to join the ranks of the team’s true greats before back injuries abruptly ended his career, but that last part is unfortunately what sinks it since he never got the chance to join said greats.

i wouldn’t be *opposed* to his number being retired, but i highly doubt it will be

  17. On the list of Red Wings to be retired before he’s even in the conversation are: Fedorov, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Osgood, Shanahan and probably a few others.

    No.

  18. BellsBeersy

Love Mickey and he did accomplish some feats (first Red Wing to score 50 in a season) but take a look at the names the Wings have retired. Do you really think he fits in? He has also played the least seasons with the Wings out of any of them by quite a few.

  19. DeathToPoochie

This is why the Wings need a Ring of Honor or something similar. So many players, coaches, broadcasters etc. deserve to be recognized for their contributions

  20. If he is the Red Wings Ernie Harwell, he deserves a statue

  21. Big bronze statue wearing a wings jersey with a flannel over it. He is synonymous with Red Wing hockey and will live forever with the franchise.

  22. Tigersfan1985

Crazy to think that he was the first 50 goal scorer for a season in red wings history. Especially with everyone that came before him
