  1. Any expansion now has be QBC cuz anywhere else you risk moving like the Yotes. The SLC moves cements cold environs where people enjoy winter sports is only way to go.

  2. If two teams came into the west the Preds can move into the east. If it’s Phoenix, Houston, KC, and Atlanta, the Preds would be natural rivals for ATL.

  3. The state of the Winnipeg Jets over the last decade serves as a potential bellwether for a Quebec Nordiques revival. The team will do well early on due to strong nostalgia, but if or when the team's fortunes on or off the ice decline after the honeymoon period ends, the team's long term viability will be put into doubt.

  4. There HAS to be an expansion team in Houston before anything happens again with Arizona (or Atlanta), the NHL would be crazy to give them another shot before going to Houston, the 4th largest city in the US. Plus, the Dallas vs. Houston rivalry would be great

  5. The NHL does NOT need more than 32 teams. I know, I know, I sound like a broken record. But I’m still too stubborn and set in my ways when it comes to saying “No” to NHL expansion.

  6. How come Portland Oregon never gets mentioned in these expansion videos? I think it would be a perfect market for Hockey. The Portland/Vancouver (WA) area is a big metro market and I don’t think people outside of the PNW realize how big hockey is in the WA/OR area.

  7. In a 1972 expose on Ken Dryden he said he worried if fans would pay $7-8 for a ticket to watch poor teams as the league expanded from 14-16 franchises. There is not the talent for 32 teams now, so can we expect AHL or even ECHL level players in the bottom half of the league with 36?

  8. As an Atlanta native who was too young at the time (26 now) to really support the Thrashers would love to see them back with the same name (though they could change the colors lol). I don't really see what else they would call the team. It's the state bird and it fits the avian theme of our pro sports teams. (Outside of the f1's baseball team in Marietta)

Oh and fuck the Atlanta spirit group

  9. Utah gotta go with the Yeti for its name…The Utah Yeti has a different ring to it and the jerseys and logos and signage would have the opportunity to be cool af

  10. Houston and KC both join? Easy work around to keep four divisions!!!
Move the Utah team to the Pacific (yes technically they aren’t one of the expansion teams, but their a “new” team in a new market, they have no history tied to the central division and their teams, so no one in Utah I doubt would be very mad if they got moved to the Pacific say three years into their lifetime.)
KC and Houston to the Central. Atlanta to the Metro, Quebec to the Atlantic.
    Four divisions of 9

  11. My Guess: Coyotes to Utah
The 4 Expansion Sites Would Be: Atlanta, Houston, Kansas City and Phoenix

A timezone friendly 6×6 realignment would be implemented.

    EASTERN CONFERENCE
Atlantic: NJD, NYI, NYR, PHI, PIT, WSH
Northeast: BOS, BUF, DET, MTL, OTT, TOR
Southeast: ATL, CAR, CLB, FLA, NSH, TBL

    WESTERN CONFERENCE
Central: CHI, DAL, HOU, KC, MIN, STL
Mountain: ARZ, CGY, COL, EDM, UTA, WPG
Pacific: ANA, LAK, SJS, SEA, VAN, VGS

  12. Unfortunately, it's Winnipeg's turn (again) to go through a biopsy. So here's the Greek tragedy that THG has just set up. Coyotes move to Utah and become the Pookie Bears, or whatever market researched kid oriented thing they call them. ATL, KCMO, HOU, and either Quebec or Hartford jump back into the fray – that's 36. So then does WPG end up going back to PHX again?? That just seems too incendiary a thought to even entertain. You'll have the NHL trying to move a problematic franchise to another area that just lost their franchise. Yeah, I get the numbers and the circs, but the optics are really, really, bad. And yeah, PHX will fill an arena. VGK has filled up their arena from the get-go, also in a hot desert city, but VGK has something that PHX never had – a successful, saavy marketing, and WINNING franchise. Put that in PHX and you get just as rabid a fan base, just as raucous an arena, and just as high ticket prices…Dollars to ding-dongs Smith already has a name picked out. These "name the team" campaigns are all scams. They already know the team name through "market research", and they use the bogus naming contest to float their own name into the fray. I GUARANTEE you that "Golden Knights" was not a fan favorite. That was Bill Foley's name. Actually, he wanted "Black Knights" until the US Army cockblocked him on that one. Out of all the catchy names with a Las Vegas feel – Blackjacks, Jokers, Atom Bombs, blah, blah, blah, you end up with Golden Knights? Read Ryan Smith's bio. You'll find the team's name in there somewhere already…

  13. I love the elimination of the divisions idea but make the conferences north vs. south. That way it is more fair with travel and you can have all the Canadians teams competing against each other. Atlanta won't work. The Braves don't sell out playoff games. The NHL should go Arizona/ Houston expansion in 5 years. Go north v south and the NHL can just keeping adding two at a time until their content.

  14. If the NHL opted to expand with Arizona and Houston/KC, could they move Nashville to the east? They're certainly much closer to most eastern teams than western already

  15. If Omaha feels like an odd choice just keep in mind that this is an ever expanding city, with one of the highest amounts of millionaires per capita, the city with the second most Fortune 500 companies (second only to New York City) and zero professional sports teams in (sort of) 3 states (Iowa Nebraska and Kansas – i know KC has pro sports but they are technically in Missouri)
Lots of points brought up here, the city of Omaha checks off. Just for anyone that is curious as to "why Omaha Nebraska??"

  16. 36 teams? Phoenix, Atlanta, Quebec, and Houston. 2 east, 2 west. Quebec gets their team, and see if Phoenix 2.0 or Atlanta 3.0 work out. Don't forget, those three US cities have to compete with NBA, NFL, MLB, and NCAA

  17. I don't live in Atlanta anymore but I'd love to see the city get a team back. The only thing that would make me happier would be for my Whalers to return but I know that won't happen in my lifetime.

  18. Atlanta shouldn't even be a thought. Failed twice for a reason. Not to mention what a shit jersey and team the whole time lmao… bonehead move to try to stick a team for the third time into Asslanta….

  19. This entire thing is wild. The coyotes are not moving salt Lake is a new team new history they don't get any of jets stuff. It's an expansion team with zero history that has all of the coyotes hockey operations

  20. I live in Kansas City, particularly in the downtown neighborhood the arena is. It would be a smash hit here. Also Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are known hockey fans. I will not put on a tinfoil cap, but the NHL is absolutely aware of the financial impact Taylor Swift has had on the NFL.

  21. Houston is the biggest market on the board & Quebec City has the best hockey traditions on the board. Those 2 are the most deserving for sure.

Phoenix (bailed out by NHL multiple times and given a redemption window) & Atlanta (twice) had their chance and blew it.

    Kansas City would be alright.

Hamilton, Hartford, and Cincinnati all have bad arenas from 1970 and are very close to TOR/ BUF, BOS/NYR/ NYI/ NJ, & CBJ respectively.

  22. One major metro area is Austin, TX. Austin has proven to be a MEGA dedicated fanbase selling out MLS games at ~21,000 capacity Q2 Stadium for Austin FC.

Along the same line of thinking would be Portland, OR. Another proven dedicated fanbase for the Trailblazers and Timber.

I'd be disappointed to see most new expansion teams be repeats.
