Here’s an interesting scenario: Matheson on the ice for 24 minutes, Hutson on the ice for 21 minutes, whoever else on the left for 16. That’s a long fucking 45 minutes with a serious scoring threat on the blue line. How many teams can manage that kind of opposition?

Matheson really took too much unwarranted criticism this year. I remember calling him the “puck fumbler” but he was quietly putting up points all season. I think he was perceived as making more mistakes than he did simply because he always had the puck.

I’m somewhat of a Matheson hater. He’s an excellent player, but I feel that he doesn’t really fit the teams current timeline. The goal should be to develop the young D, having Matheson hogging tough minutes and also hogging the puck doesn’t help guys like Guhle develop.
If Guhle is to be a top LD on this team, he needs to be there on the Left shutting down top lines, not playing offhand RD covering for Mathesons many mistakes. I remember Guhle was a weapon in his early career when he was playing on his strong side with a reliable partner. Got some PP looks as well.
Assuming Guhle is a lock for the team next year, and Hutson is NHL ready, would you prefer to see Matheson put up another career year on a losing team, or see Guhle and Hutson develop into top pair LHD?
Matheson has immense current value, but this isn’t a win now team. It’s a develop 5-6D who will all be better than Matheson team.
