Was the ’23-’24 season a success or failure?

The Detroit Red Wings soared to new heights this season with 91 points and break out years from Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider. But, they still fell short of the playoffs due to self-inflicted wounds. Was the season a success? Shai Buium, a ’21 2nd round pick, signed an ELC and is headed to GR. Larkin is the Wings King Clancy award nominee. #LGRW

  1. kane better resign with detroit he owes it to the team after claiming playoffs in February which was a downfall for everyone else especially the coach who is as green as blashill was with talent! 🤷‍♂️🫤🤔👍

  2. I'd say this season was a success but yet also a failure. So what's the best way to say it? The season was a successful failure lol 🎉🎉. If we just got one more ot point we would have made it. But it didnt happen. But I see this season had a lot of success it makes me excited about the next season and hopefully seeing more of our draft picks make the roster. Biggest issues defensive pairings I can see like at least three defenseman that we would be better off without. They're also a few forwards I think the Red wings would be better off without and utilizing those spots for rookies like burger , kasper or mazer. also @Brian , is your radio broadcasting station on Spotify? Because I was looking for it but can't find it can I listen to Spotify a lot driving in and home from work. Anyway great show is always Brothers stay frosty

  3. Problem is last season was the borderline playoff expectation & this year with Debrincat addition, was to make the playoffs and possibly win a series.

  4. Calling the season a success and using that pathetic “they did what we predicted” line is a loser mentality.

There were definitely some positives but the season overall was a failure…period

  5. Questions abound. Is Newsy the answer? Goaltending? Forwards? Defensemen?
Who goes? Who stays? This was NOT a playoff team.

  6. They were entertaining and competitive to the final second. They weren’t going to win the Stanley Cup or even a series so I say Success!!!! You can’t argue they haven’t significantly improved every year. With even an average March we would’ve been a 100 point team.

  7. Success in increasing points but failure in goals against. Needed to get to 240's but fell very short. No games of giving up 7+ goals per game but team defense was crap. Goalies standing on their collective heads could only do so much with their skills. Our goalies are no better than 2nd string and still end just a bit above 3 gaa. There was a lot of excitement and some great showing from some players but Dec. and March were both brutal. Philly pulled their goalie to try and win the game in regulation but Wings did what they need to do in last 4 games. Just not good enough to get over the hump this year. Close but no char until we play team defense. LGRW 🏒

  8. This was a success but Yzerman will have some work to do to stay ahead of other teams so we dont regress. Goalie is a big question mark with Cossa probably still a year out. Lyon is a perfect backup right now, but we need a bridge without losing too much. The need for a 1/2C equal to or better than Larkin is the other big piece. Hopefully, either Kasper or Danielson can fill that role, but it may require a trade… Defense can be filled internally or via FA probably moving out Holl and moving Petry to 7th D.

  9. On the brink of catching Toronto to missing the playoffs in just a month. With three teams desperate not to catch them no less. You will never convince me this season wasn't a failure.

  10. I think this team was more than good enough to get to the playoffs but i believe the coaching cost the wings the playoffs.

  11. Was watching another podcast with Darren McCarty on that one he said it simple as a former player. This was a 500 team from the start with the current roster. So on his observations they over achieved so yes the season was a success if you look at it that way. We lack that 100 pt 1C goaltending may sort itself if Husso gets healthy and can get his game back with Lyon as backup next season with cossa probably another yr in g r before he’s ready. Will Kane sign? Kinda doesn’t sound like it. Berger most likely done in Detroit sounds like his choice but we will see. Bad thing is we have borderline d men under contract that need to go and could be filled internally and be as good as the ones we have that need to go and grown their game at the nhl level. Who’s gonna make the next step in training camp to beat out the forwards on the team will be fun to see next fall. There will be some new faces on the team next season who stays and who comes in is the big question for the offseason. Who yzerman resigns and who he let walks should give an idea of who may take those spots. I see next season depending on who is let go or sign to be close to this seasons compete level. Still believe they are 2 season away from being a legit playoff team. That said good job boys you made it an exciting season and finale. Best hockey we have had in many yrs

  12. It was a success, although with a very disappointing ending (obviously!). IMHO, goals for vs. goals against is a much better measure of who is more deserving of that 8th playoff spot than wins in regulation is.

  13. Yzerman added 11 new players to the roster and spent 28 million dollars, and they didn't make the playoffs. Now, he is stuck with at least 4 bad contracts, and he needs to come up with big money for Raymond and Seider. So, i would say the team was somewhat successful, but Yzerman failed!

  14. I keep hearing hearing that the season was a success because they improved from last year. You guys are conflating progress with success. The season was a failure because they didn’t make the playoffs which should be every team’s goal. Did the team progress from last year yes but still a failure.

  15. Seider is not going to be a superstar, and the veterans Yzerman brought in are not part of a rebuild. If you are rebuilding a home, you don't do it by taking an old foundation from another home to build it on!

  16. they need to get rid of the extra point for a tie it's ruining the bracket and we get a mess like this one where 5 or 6 teams could make it call it a tie and each team gets a point

  17. The Wings depth scoring improved this year but looking at the top six forwards and the top four defense play, no improvement from the previous year. Goaltending was no better. The sad part is, with the exception of Raymond and Seider, there is little hope of the top skilled players improving next year. Bring up the prospects or make the big trade to improve the top end skill roster. In the big games the lack of elite players was painfully obvious.

  18. Yes they improved, but they did so with an older team and better overall roster. If we were a young team and ifBergs, Edvinsson, and 1 other prospect played a full season and we didn’t have veteran dead weight, it’d be easier to stomach. The concern is taking a step back next year if/when we get younger.

  19. I would not call the season a failure but at the same time, a major disappointment. The reality is that this Wings team has a lot of holes; namely, offense, defense, goaltending. Their offense has one strong line (Larkin, Raymond, Debricant). Compher is a solid center on the 2nd line. But that is it. Kane is a great player but does not play defense & it is doubtful if he will resign. I believe the defense will improve next year but I am not sure that their offense will improve.much if at all. The team's physical play needs improvement or they will continue to get pushed around. Finally, who will be their goalies next year? Husso? Lyon? Reimer? None of these guys are the answer and Cossa will probably not be ready to take on tghat role.

  20. 2nd year in a row that the wings choked with the extra pressure in the playoff race- same as joosing 2 in a row to the Sens at the end of last season. Other teams step up but the Wings fold

  21. Brian and Scotty you are doing great job all year, thank you for your commitment, spot on observation on things and sense of humour as well.

  22. Depends. If you call about 2/3rds the seats at LCA empty by mid-January next season a success ¯_(ツ)_/¯ At this point, if Dylan Larkin wants to trade to a team that has a shot at the Stanley Cup when his contract expires, I'm all for it. Dylan deserves a chance. This "8 Year Rebuild" is a fanbase killer, with losses in revenue that cause huge problems down the line. Almost an entire generation will not see a 16 game winning playoff for the Cup. You've got several players coming out of a primary contract and the Wings will have to fork over some big Cap Space Cash to keep them, which means fewer experienced vets coming in to help, like Kaner, who will demand large cash infusions to play. I attended several Sharks games this year (I live 4 hours away) and you could land a plane in the SAP Center without hitting anyone, that's how many seats are empty and they are only 3 years into a "Rebuild". Hate to break it to anyone, but most people don't want to watch losing. They pay to watch to win. Life is full of losses and watching a team exemplify that is the opposite of what people need. People turn to sports to get away from losing, and they'll turn away from their favorite team when they can't win.

  23. When they choked that 4 goal lead against San Jose I was LIVID. It is so sad it came down to that ONE point they blew against the worst team in hockey. I’ll never get over it. I’ll never forgive Lyon for not making ONE good save against the Pens. This was self induced. Lalonde gets alot of the blame.

  24. I’m so sick of hearing “yeah but where we were” shut up. We were overplaying when we got hot. It was never sustainable. We were always going to have a correction and even out. You can only look at the start of the season to now if you’re asking if the season as a whole was a success and by that metric it absolutely was.

  25. 2023-2024 was a success. We finished 11 points higher in the standings than we did in 2022-2023, and we were in it til the very end. Really, I expected 90 points and to be eliminated by the end of March. Instead, we saw meaningful hockey in April, in game 82, all the way up to the final moments of overtime. Stevie has work to do this summer, and I think the next goal for him and the team is playoffs, but this season? Success.
