Wooooof…
Bottom 3 on both sides for Transition, Possession, Center Control, Rush Shots and especially Defense…all keys to modern winning.
Maybe several 07 goalies washing out traumatized isn’t about ‘fit’ after all
Stats all screaming for a big Yzer-moves summer or is the system just that far off?

Didn’t need a chart to know we had all sorts of trouble entering the zone, but 32nd? Yikes
Low on rush shots on both sides; we’re slow. We knew this.
Possession entry and possession exit near-worst-in-the-league. Yep. Something is definitely wrong.
A crazy-good power-play that gets top-third opportunities in the league will carry you right up until the refs stop calling penalties.
We need to be able to protect the puck when that happens.
I doubt there will be big moves made this summer. They will most likely keep adding depth players on 1-3 year contracts while waiting for some of the young guys in the system to push their way onto the team. Kasper and/or Donaldson will most likely see time next year(maybe not right out of camp but eventually) as well as Johansson on D. Also a chance Mazur gets a look as well if he’s playing well to start the year in the A. I think Berggren most likely gets traded at some point this off-season and maybe a guy like Holl if there is a market for him.
Team is VERY VERY SLOW, 31st in Rush chances highlights this.
Also fucking horrible at exiting the zone 28th, and horrible at entering the zone 32nd, and horrible at forechecking and preventing zone exits 31st.
Replacing Copp, Perron, etc. With big fast skilled offensive players must be priority 1.
Our passing was god awful and we played “dump-and(no)-chase” far too often.
They really never locked in a consistent, effective team game all season. There were good games all throughout, but even their good games carried the DNA in this breakdown. I can imagine the number of truly “great” games they played this season is shockingly low. Honestly, that game against the Capitals was one of their best of the year, and I know there were very few games like that one.
Better players will help, but I really hope the coaching staff can learn from these two seasons. I’m tired of so many of the ineffective things they do. Defensemen getting stuck behind the net because they have no open forwards to pass to, so they rim it around the boards where it’s easily turned into a battle at the blue line. Passive waiting and watching in the defensive zone, but forwards in the neutral zone making runs at the puck carrier and whiffing completely because they’re standing still. The rare offensive zone pressure without even a sniff of a shot on goal. Mindless dump ins that we have no chance to retrieve. So many things I could point to that have to change.
It’s coaching, and not just the head coach, we needed to wipe the entire staff a couple of years ago. This shit was around with Blashill, still here with Lalonde, and it’s definitely not Stevie teaching them that.
possession exit % – 31
possession entry % – 32 there are only 32 teams in the league and one of them is columbus how the fk are we 32
Can we get a goal breakdown by type of every kind in the NHL? Tip vs. wrist shot vs. slap shot etc.
I’m convinced we have the lowest tipped-goal percentage in the NHL. We shoot high and into the chest of the goalie or wide, instead of contesting the front of the net with tipped goals like the Rangers have with Kreider, Pavelski on the Stars, even Crosby had a ton of tips/deflections.
LaLonde gotta go I think
I knew by eye test that the stats would be bad, but I didn’t think they were THIS bad
The style they play the possession and entrees numbers are going to be bad but it’s worse than I thought. Defensively nothing shocking here they were a terrible defensive team all season.
Love seeing this. I’ve been bitchin about this for years. A good defense is having a good offense. If you have control, they don’t. I felt like the majority of the team just didn’t want to make a mistake. That’s boring hockey. For all we know, Lalonde wanted real short shifts causing a lot of dump and changes, not chases. Next to no confidence on this team. If I’m Kane, I already know if this is the team I want to play with next season. Possession guy on a non possession team. Not a fit.
Uggg this is not a good look for a team that’s supposed to be on the upswing
Looks like a coaching thing. Replace.
This pissed me off. The dumping it in all year made me frustrated every game but I didn’t know it was this bad. Coaching needs to change.
People want to scapegoat LaLonde. Maybe he isn’t the answer. But it’s 90% about the players and this roster is mostly short-term filler. Expect no more than 5-6 of the current players to be on this team by the time the Red Wings make a real Stanley Cup push. The entire D will change over besides Seider and Edvinson. The only forwards still around will be Larkin, Raymond, Debrincat, and maybe one or two others.
Stevie assembles a crappy roster and hires a crappy coach to work with said crappy roster… let’s 100% blame the coach!
Not having ghost and petry will probably move us up to middle of the pack in zone exits next season lol
The difference between our first line and the bottom 3 lines is staggering.
Larkin, Raymond, and DeBrincat were flying compared to the other lines.
So who needs to go?
We have specific players who are playing poorly and driving these lousy results.
The worst players in expected goals (5 on 5) were Ghost, Seider, Petry, Chiarot, and Holl — Holl was worst by a lot. Ghost is probably gone and maybe we can ship out or buy out Holl. Seider is not a bad player, that stat is usage-driven and he could improve with more talent around him.
Petry and Chiarot aren’t going anywhere. They played 719 minutes together and sucked — 45.8% expected goal share with them out in the ice. That is usually *with* Walman-Seider drawing worse assignments and getting killed to the tune of 41.1%. That is not viable. A sheltered second unit that still gets caved in is what killed us five on five. And it’s what forces the sheltering — you need to use Seider against talented forwards because even average forwards are feasting against your second d-pair.
Seider and Chiarot together (292 minutes) were also lousy — 43.1%. Not sure if Chiarot is better than Walman or if Lalonde gave them slightly easier matchups.
Edvinsson Petry, in their 201 minutes, were 54.7%. If that is viable next season it really changes the picture. Either Seider can be used in a more sane way or he can continue to take lumps because the second unit can feast.
Chiarot did have a pairing that was successful — with Holl for 126 minutes he was at 52.3% expected goals. That is not because Holl is good, the reflects third pairing usage with the sheltering caused by Seider’s extreme deployment. It’s still a little encouraging. If we can keep Chiarot in a #5 role he may be successful.
Of course there’s more to expected goals than defensive pairings. Larkin and Raymond played a lot together five on five and had positive xGoals with DeBrincat as the third and negative with Perron. Larkin was also negative with Kane and DeBrincat. Compher was positive with Kane and DeBrincat. I don’t think that’s because Compher is better than Larkin, I think it’s because that unit sometimes drew second defensive units because of Larkin and Raymond on the top line. But Perron can’t be the third, he doesn’t have the wheels.
If we can keep Kane we need another top 6 forward, someone with speed and back checking and enough skill to play on the top six. I guess you could plunk Fabbri in there but we don’t and presumably for a reason.
The Ras-Copp-Fischer unit was our best forward combo with at least 100 minutes played together. Wouldn’t want to break it up unless we have to.
It’s crazy to me how we can replace 90% of the roster/coaching staff and still have such a hard time entering the zone. Clearly a scheme issue!
This has been an issue since the end of the Babcock/Datsyuk era. We haven’t had the talent who can actually carry the puck through the neutral zone without game breaking speed (remember when the drop pass to Larkin/AA was literally our entire strategy).
Coaching has been obsessed with the dump & chase because it can mitigate the lack of talent. My question is, how the fuck has it been 7 years and not one person has been brought in to deal with this issue? You’re telling me no one has been available across most of a decade, with 2 GMs and 2 coaches?
We don’t put a premium on possession and it absolutely kills us.
The amount of times we gave up the puck at center ice during a change doing a bullshit pass was mind blowing. Led to 2-3 Mickey “look out” calls a night.
Looking at all that how’d we even win as much as we did? That chart above looked like we sucked.
Seeing these numbers really makes me hope wings give Berggren a spot next year. His strengths are some of the wings weaknesses and skill set is unique to the rest of the roster
I don’t believe he’s actually bad defensively. People just read and hear quotes and copy that thought. He struggles against the boards/weak in battles at times. Reminds me of Maccelli on Arizona/utah
Would be solid scoring depth player on a cheaper contract. Expecting sprong to be gone and potentially both kane and Perron and who knows about Veleno. Only so much can be spent on free agency to replace them
Wings defence needs a complete change obviously. Ghost walks, holl traded or bought out and maybe it’s false hope but petry retires.
Some of those stats are system-oriented. Like for example, finishing 31st in rush shots. Larkin is a rush shot *machine*, for example, but they’re even having him dump it in at times.
