DAVID QUINN FIRED AFTER TWO SEASONS IN SAN JOSE

The San Jose Sharks have fired Head Coach David Quinn after two seasons. React to why the news was initially surprising, why it makes sense for Mike Grier and the Sharks to move on now, and how important the next hire is for the Sharks so they don’t become the next perpetually rebuilding team. Next, what did Mike Grier say in his media availability, why Quinn’s record wasn’t the deciding factor in the move, and if this was more about connecting with the players in the dressing room? Also, examine John McCarthy’s future and other nuggets from Mike Grier’s availability. Finally, explore five potential replacements for the San Jose Sharks head coaching position, including Ryan Warsofsky, David Carle, and Jay Woodcroft.

  1. I'm surprised, and have many questions, but I don't waste time speculating why. I'm looking forward to seeing a new head coach and what he can bring to San Jose Sharks the next season and further.

  2. Tbh , I didn't like the Quinn hire to begin with. But now it's interesting to see what direction they go. I think I prefer a "young exciting" hire, however as long as thry get it right

  3. Quinn seems like a good man & I wish him well going forward, but I’m pleased with this move. Other teams would have done the same thing. Lastly, Quinn’s still got 1 year left on his contract, so he’ll be fine.

I’d like to see Marco Sturm get an interview. Coached Team Germany in a past Olympics and is currently in the LA King system (AHL Coach). Oh hey, how about Sturm, Jumbo & Marleau coaching staff?

  4. I was expecting Quinn would start next season as coach. However, if the players' compete level did not improve, I expected a mid-season change.

  5. Sharks had the most Injury Reserve Hours of any NHL team in 2023-2024. I don't know what else Quinn could have done.

  6. Maybe it's to keep everybody on their toes. Maybe they need a different coach to attract some needed free agents.

  7. First move Greer has made that I don’t like. Is Greer covering has ass because the team he gave Quinn was so bad!

  8. hire Dennis “the Menace” Williams — Team Canada’s winning coach w/Bedard 🇨🇦 played against him when I was younger, he was gritty, tough and could score 🎉 🥅 🏒 he’s coaching junior right now.. and we got all these young kids that need coaching 😅😊

  9. Bill Walsh believed the first pro season for EVERY player was a system teaching season. in hockey, that's probably going to be at the AHL level. so, every draft pick, regardless of their "NHL readiness" ("pro frame", "mature game", etc.) should probably start in the AHL IF they are considered ready for the pro game. Walsh also believed that the second pro season was to develop the players skills WITHIN the system. he wanted each rookie to have a specific/defined role in the beginning and then expand on that year-over-year. above all, he wanted his players to play "fast". playing fast means knowing your role within the system, reinforced by repetition in training, and not needing to "think" (respond is better) in game. drafting "high IQ"/players with "pace" is a good place to start. speaking of drafting, Walsh believed in drafting players based on what they could do for his teams, rather than their pre-draft rankings.

  10. i think a prospective NHL HC should be someone with NHL assistant experience (preferably under a great HC), and perhaps experience as a HC at another level.

  11. Another interesting candidate for me is former Shark Marco Sturm. Hes being a assistant for the kings for 4 years and hes currently doing well with the Ontario Reign in the AHL as a head coach. Im suprised that very few had consider him.

  12. Another possible coach to keep an eye on is Bruins assistant coach Joe Sacco. He was also interviewed for the Sharks job back in 2022 and was a former NHL player and I believe teammate of Mike Grier in Washington. He coached the Avalanche for 4 seasons. Might be an interesting guy to give another look at.

  13. The more I think about it, Quinn screwed up last year when the Sharks were motivated and had that late season win streak they made them miss out on a better chance at Connor Bedard. I don't mind how the Sharks finished this season, they need young talented players. A new coach is important so the players don't get complacent and used to losing. I think Greer should hold a meeting with the team and tell them they better get ready for next season or he'll bring in Daryl Sutter as coach.
