B.C. runner misses 60-hour marathon cutoff by 6 seconds

A Canadian ultramarathoner managed to run for 60 hours through the cold, muddy hills of one of the toughest races in the world, but his triumph ended with heartbreak and a disqualification.

Gary Robbins, of North Vancouver, B.C., was attempting to become the first Canadian to complete the notorious Barkley Marathons, a gruelling 60-hour race through the steep hills of Tennessee that only a handful of people have ever completed.

  1. So I guess I have participated in this event less than he yet completed this event just as much as he has. I'll wait for the news story to come out on me now.

  2. I had something like this happen to me except instead of a 60 hour marathon I was 20 minutes late before the close of the 7/11.

  3. If he would have been disqualified for going off course regardless of his time… why publish a story where the lead-in about his time? He wasn't 6 seconds late for anything, he went the wrong way – period.

  4. Fire those wondering:
No one in ultra running respects this guy. Gary Robbins is a known self promoter and liar. His ultra resume is WELL below average. This is a perfect example. The guy didn’t miss it by 6 seconds. He missed it by taking the wrong trail, coming back from the wrong direction and yea, just happened to get back to the gate 6 seconds after all this nonsense.
Gary Robbins is a POS. Ultra community better without him

  5. the fact that he took that so well and did not need to resort to shouting, he had an incredible show of control and reign over his emotions (I will admit if I was in that position, wrong turn or not, there would've been some voices raised) that was in of itself incredible!

  6. What did he eat and drink during all that time. This level of endurance is too hard for my brain to process

  7. Think of everyone else who finished on time: Who cares? This guy is literally last and gets all that fame!

  8. ”Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.“
