It really has been quite the journey for Jacob to get to this point.

  1. I believe he was a big reason the Utica Comets went to the Calder Cup finals in 2015, so yeah, very smart in the end to put him through waivers.

I've seen some say the expansion draft, now only a year and a half away, complicates things, but I'd say it simplifies them somewhat, as long as Markstrom can be signed to a non-stupid deal.

Roll with the same two goalies for one more year, with Demko told he will be staying long-term as long as he plays to the expected standard. Then if Marky still looks great, he can go to Seattle, protecting Vancouver's skaters getting picked in the process. If Markstrom doesn't go to Seattle, then he's still a trade asset, or can stay on as number 1 if something stalls with Demko. That's how I see things panning out anyway.

  2. Marky is just getting into his prime. Most NHL goalies reach their prime in their late 20s early 30s, look at Roy, Hasek, Brodeur all were even better as they became older. The Canucks are still a relatively young team having a 'veteran' goalie in the fold can overcome the trials & tribulations of a young team. This year Marky has stood on his head on numerous occasions and has been the best player on the ice for most of the year.

Imagine where this team would be at if he wasn't in net. No disrespect to Demko who has been good but he's not ready to play 60-70 games a year.

  3. The Canucks are in the basement if they don't have Markstrom this year. He's stolen a lot of games for them.

  4. Ideally I'd like for a marky extension for 3 years then trade him in the last year. Near the end of his contract the duo should be demko and dipietro

  5. i always thought markstrom was pretty good at least a couple years ago when he had that 9.10 saver percentage. he always made really good saves but his problem was he would let in a soft one all the time

  6. Markstrom for Jones and a 2 round pick… I really hope this becomes a thing, would really help the sharks.

  7. I think after the allstar break is the perfect time to trade him. We're going to need to move either him or Demko before the expansion draft, and unless we go on a deep playoff run, his stock won't get any higher than it currently is. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Markstrom, but Demko is our guy long-term, and I'd hate to see Marky walk while getting nothing in return.

  8. If there's one thing you need to win a Stanley Cup, it's good goaltending. So heck, why not keep both and have them split starts like in Boston with Halak and Rask?

  9. Am I the only one that noticed you can't play 12 games in a season and have a 1-6-3 record? that's only 10 games… Not to be overly critical, I love your work, just a funny mistake.
I also think it would be worth looking at a shorter term contract for Markstrom. I disagree that Demko is ready for fulltime play, maybe look at a 2-3 year contract with Demko playing a bigger role than he currently does. Markstrom tends to get burnt out when played too much and Demko likes to get injured, start with markstrom as the number 1 and slowly transition Demko to 50% of the games giving you 2 starters, Solving both the Markstrom burnouts, and having a good goalie to take over in the event of inevitable Demko injuries.

  10. Picked him as my first half MVP in the last column – glad to see he's backed me up on that pick tonight! 😄

Markstrom is definitely a guy you need to see play before you understand just how well he's doing. Going to be tricky to keep between the cap and expansion, but I'm hoping for a two or three year deal. That should give Demko enough time to fill out his game – if he stays healthy.

  11. 2014-15 was Markstrom's year to build confidence in the AHL, as he took the Utica Comets to their first finals appearance of the AHL playoffs. That was when I think Jim Benning decided to pull the trigger on the Lack trade, as Jim thought Lack already peaked, whereas Markstrom, with a renewed confidence could be the goalie with a higher ceiling.

  12. Demko need to split games next year if we sign Marky, if Seattle rolls around we protect Demko and run with him with DiPietro

  13. I say commit to him for maybe 3 to 5 years. He is on the young side of 30 yrs old and thats when players usually hit their prime. Example: Luongo was 31 yrs old when he backstopped the Canucks to the finals, Fleury was 32 when he won with the Pens in 2016.

  14. This guy has been great. I almost think they should trade Demko and give Dipietro time to mature. It fits the timeline better. They will likely lose one to the expansion draft anyway.

  15. Marky is great like a god and I love him and I’ve always seen potential in him since he was a Canuck!

  16. This is tricky. We have the Seattle expansion draft coming up after next season. We can only protect one goalie. Both of ours are legit starters, either now or will be, so you know Seattle will likely grab one of them.
I’d play it this way. We look like a playoff team for this season. I’d see what Markie does with that pressure. If he holds up, I’d keep him and make Demko available. He would likely fetch a good return.
It’s not like Markus has been a long term starter, ie he doesn’t have quite as much wear and tear for his age. Goalies have a tendency to age more slowly than anyone else. So…though he’s 30, I’d still say he has 7-8 good years left. Plenty of time to see if DiPietro has NHL potential or not

  17. Most underrated starter in NHL imo. I can see him stealing games in the playoffs.
I started watching NHL again early 2018 and never understood why so many people kept complaining about Markström and how he needs to be replaced.
Now I understand where this come from, but after seeing this video, I only have more respect for him.

  18. This and last season markys been unbelievable and proved my wrong cause from when marky came in till about the 17-18 season I was very on edge about the guy but ever since the 18-19 season he’s been great. This season I think at the pace he’s playing he should be a strong candidate for the vezina and quite honestly should win the bill masterton award because of his perseverance with his dad passing away months ago and playing this amazing.

  19. Really appreciate the one-take mindset, I think it's a lost art on this platform, but if we're going that route, is it possible to mute the coughing? Seems like a simple edit assuming you use a simple editing software prior to uploading. Thanks, and keep up the great work.

  20. Thoughts on trading Marks for Athanasiou? Don't beat me up too much Nuk fans. I am a not as keen with Van's needs as I am with Det's, just seeing what others think.

  21. To me Markström is simply a canuck, but if he were to be traded we could probably get something juicy from it. Only question then is if Demko can manage a starting position.

  22. It's totally Luongo/Schneider all over again. I think it all comes down to his contract, if you can get him for 5 million or less? And he's a proven #1/ all-star goalie? And you can lock him up long term? … I don't want to say it, but yeah, you have to think about trading Demko down the line, even if Demko could turn out to be even better (and he totally still could. Being this good in his rookie season is pretty crazy).

Also, you can't discount how good of a fit he seems to be in the locker room. Maybe it's just that when a 6'6 grinning viking wants to be your friend you say "more like BEST friend!", but they really seem to love him in all the behind the scenes stuff.

Also also: complete tangent, but I love how alive the locker room seems now. Like they're all a bunch of buds who happened to end up on the same hockey team. It's so great.

  23. I remember Markström from Brynäs before he left for the NHL. He was unreal for two seasons, and you could tell that he was going to be an all star goalie, but I wouldnt never think it would take this long. I really think that this is a guy who needs a certain chemistry in the team to succeed, and that chemistry with all the swedish influeces you have in the Canucks fits his mentality perfectly.

  24. Man was I certain he was a bust here in Florida… I used to hate when I’d show up and see him between the pipes starting…boy we’re we all wrong. Congrats on all the success Marky! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

  25. He could be considered a late bloomer, but he never really had a chance with a legit team. With a full team in front of him he can absolutely be an all star for the rest of his career.

  26. This is just proof that Benning knows more than the fanbase does. While he makes boneheaded signings and moves, I don't doubt he always has some kind of plan in mind.

  27. I'm sorry Shannon but it hurts my freakin' swedish ears everytime you say "Lack"…or Niclas "Backstrom". I know you didn't attend Swedish pronunciation class in school over there but – if you from now on – would pronounce their surnames as Leck and Beckstrom I'll send you either a team Sweden jersey or the jersey from my favourite team in the SHL. Thanks for all the great vids though, keep up the great work and stay safe. Cheers.
