Nobody seems to know, but after watching years of hockey, and seeing players battle through some pretty significant injuries to bring their teams to victory.. This is pretty embarrassing in my opinion..

lets say both matthews and nylander had some sort of neurological something or other. Thats not something anyone f*s with. as hard as these guys skate if you're a little off and take a header into the boards you can end your career. I'm not making excuses for them, but I'd rather see them not play than play when they're off and end up hurting themselves.
i'm a leafs fan and I wanna see better. But maybe this is what it takes to clean out some of the crappy leadership upstairs (and maybe on the bench?) and get a better culture for the next playoffs. I completely agree with what you say that these guys generally aren't showing up for the playoffs, but when a whole team has that issue its a 'culture' problem thats there, not just your elites.

After seeing all these years of futility, why would anyone be a leafs fan? Pretty much pick any other team and you would be doing better. This team has been trash for the past half a century. hockey junkie i like you but this is an awful take. If Matthews is out its because he's so unhealthy it will be better to put a healthy player in. Being sick isn't like having a hairline fracture where you can just take painkillers and grit your teeth. Sickness drains you of energy. If you don't have energy you can't play.
