[Denver Post] “We never really did that kind of stuff in Tampa” “It’s new to me” The Avs don’t just embrace analytics, or just have a coach that’s fluent in them. It’s how they use the data and how they communicate it to players.

Really good article. Not because it reveals some specific detail, but because players are admitting things are different here in how they are done. Usually they are very shy from admitting things were not as good at other teams.

Glad this team embraces analytics and as sad as it was that Parnass stuff is no longer public so glad the Avs hired him.

Very good read! The nerds are really helping the team. I’d love some more specifics/ to sit in on one of those meetings 🪰

That was an awesome read and a great example of how Analytics should be used.

This was a good read. This is why Bednar is a championship winning coach. His approach to the game is very smart, level headed, and driven by facts instead of emotions. Jets got seriously out coached in that series.

We are really lucky to have Bednar, CMac, Joe, and the rest of the coaching/management staff we have.

Great article by the Denver Post! didn’t know they did actual journalism over there still?

  6. Interesting that we have direct quotes saying the Flyers, Kings, and Lightning aren’t doing anything close. I wonder how many more teams aren’t utilizing it efficiently?

Interesting read. What really stood out to me was Jack Johnson’s comment:

“…I think it’s super useful for us,” said defenseman Jack Johnson, an 18-year NHL veteran who admitted he had little desire to understand or use analytics earlier in his career…”

It’s a small tidbit, but I feel this is actually quite revealing. Remember how bad everyone used to think his hockey IQ was? Commonly cited as an “all tools, no toolbox” type of player.

I know he’s on probably the best team he’s ever played on, and gets sheltered minutes, but he has become a much better overall defenseman on the Avs, and I think this has a big part to do with it.

Great article, backs up a lot of what i’ve been hearing about the staff

As someone who does analytics for living (in banking, not hockey), this was interesting to read. I wish it would have been able to go into some more of the technical aspects, but I suppose they probably don’t want to share that stuff and it would go over most readers’ heads anyway.

Great article but wtf is up with this post title? Did a bot post this?

The whole 10 games thing is brilliant. It’s enough time to get to a statistical significance and see how much they’ve improved with whatever problem they’re having vs doing bag skates after one bad game and hoping for better results.

My question would be: how does this shift in the playoffs or does it even shift at all? 10 games is a lot in the playoffs. At the same time, the Avs seem to operate on a “next game” mentality. Maybe they keep the 10 game system because it’s just another game on another day they have to win? Unlikely but I wouldn’t be shocked if that were the case.

Jack Adams is a scam btw

  12. Stuff like this is why I’m pissed that Bednar has gotten shafted for the Jack Adams. Dude 100% deserves it.
