The Arizona Coyotes are officially headed to Salt Lake City.

The NHL Board of Governors voted unanimously Thursday to approve a $1.2 billion sale from Alex Meruelo to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith, clearing the way for the franchise’s move to Utah next season.

The deal includes a provision for Arizona to get an expansion team if a new arena is built within the next five years. The deal will be facilitated through the NHL, with $200 million going to league owners as a relocation fee.

“We expressed our interest publicly with the NHL,” Ryan Smith told The Associated Press. “It’s probably been two years where we’ve said, ‘Hey, look, we really believe Utah can be an incredible hockey town.’ You look at all the demographics, we were just talking about the Olympics and you think about the Olympics coming back. It all kind of made sense.”

  1. Bettman comes off like a babysitter for Murello and pushes him back in the crib before he screws it up again.

  2. Then why do you sold the team then you could’ve just be the same the same ownership you didn’t have to do anything you just have to move out out of Arizona simple as that dude

  3. Gary will NEVER let this go because if he does it will prove he is wrong about the market. They will get another team and they will hold the most ridiculous expansion draft. Something like each team will only be able to protect 2-4 players. Wait for it?

  4. Sooo, what if the “dormant” Coyotes franchise never gets reactivated. What happens with the statistical history of the Jets/Coyotes? Disappear? The end of the “franchise”? It’s as absurd as the Browns arrangement 25 years ago.

  5. If mureulo can't shake down phoenix for the entire project it won't get built. By then scottsdale will have thousands of new residences with retail, commercial built near the once planned project. The coyotes walked in 2000 on the Los argos site now home to innovation center skysong, currently yielding the benefit of billions in tech investments

  6. Bettman is a crapweasel! He screwed over the Phoenix fan base. Strung them along for the past year or two. He should never be trusted, and Murello should never have anything to do with a new franchise in Phoenix. The National Hockey League didn’t want another Oakland A’s situation. They found it easier to be disingenuous with the Arizona fans. Very disappointed.

  7. As a Patriots STH, to put it lightly, it's hardly a surprise why Bob Kraft has kept the heir-apparent Jonathan; out of the limelight. A "douche canoe" is putting it lightly. I wouldn't be surprised if other NFL owners forced Jonathan to sell the team when he inherits it.

  8. To me, having the games shown in Phoenix makes no difference. I am highly unlikely to watch them. It sucks too much to lose them as they are about to be good after going through as many bad years. And keeping the Roadrunners here is just another way to kick us while we are down, especially moving them to Tempe.

  9. Brodie…would you want to watch the A's once they are in Las Vegas? Of course. My dad was a Cardinals (football) diehard fan after they moved from Comiskey Park To St Louis and then to Phoenix. Brodie you will always be an A' fan.

  10. I don't trust him for a second Alex Meruelo has been lying to The people of Arizona since his arrival. A leopard doesn't change his spots.

  11. OMG again he can’t read the teams fans (or just maybe who I talk to) we have praised hockey ops, it’s ALWAYS been the business side. Sadly the side we are keeping. Wish we could reverse things. Can we get the Smiths? 😉

  12. Gary should go out with a bang and admit 4 expansion teams simultaneously and have all 4 of them take part in an expansion draft. Like imagine the amount of talent some teams would lose? Lol. It would also make for a great couple hours of TV. You could have all of the eligible players show up like the Entry Draft and go up to the stage when their name is called, maybe even do a Top 3 picture to be all extra.

  13. Grateful that nhl will be televising utah hockey games in arizona – team has a boatload of young exciting players in the pipeline – fun to watch plus a bunch of high draft picks in the next few years

  14. As a Thrashers fan, the franchise was dead to me as soon as it was sold to Manitoba. I had no desire to watch their games despite being a fan of the team since 99. I didn't watch ANY NHL games for 5 years and even now, I hate the Jets and wish they would lose every game and then lose the draft lottery every year. I don't think many AZ residents are gonna tune into Utah HC games if they watch any hockey at all.

  15. The Roadrunners are still the AHL affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes, but will have a working agreement until the NHL Utah team can set up their own AHL affiliate. Interestingly enough the Chicago Wolves of the AHL have no affiliate agreement with an NHL team.

  16. If Arizona gets a replacement team in the NHL—thus giving it 33 ACTIVE teams—will that necessitate a need for a 34th team to be added? Or would they just play with an odd number? Since 1978 (when the Cleveland Barons "merged" with the Minnesota North Stars) to 1991 (when the league added the San Jose Sharks), it played with an odd number of teams.

  17. Long time ago but when the Colts left Baltimore we were force fed their games for the first year they were in Indianapolis. It didn't go over well. Then they made Baltimore part of the Washington Redskins TV market and that wasn't popular either.

  19. Cannot keep piling on too many additional teams in the NHL otherwise the quality per team diminishes.

  20. Why anyone would do business with this clown is beyond me. Get rid of him and the Coyotes would have a much better reception where ever they went. It sucks that the players had to endure this greedy crook.

  21. Phoenix people quit bitching Salt Lake City and the workarounds with the League are enabling you to get a future franchise and keep Coyotes legacy alive. Which most NHL fans want.

  22. There are many cold weather markets that would be great for the NHL. Milwaukee, Indy, Hamilton, Cleveland. The Arizona experiment petered out, and died on the vine.
