Just saw a video of a guy explaining what to do if you were to fall in. If you extend your arms to stop your head from going in the water it dramatically increases your chance of survival. Also don’t use your arms to pull up because you could just break the ice. Taught to kick like you’re swimming to get your stomach flat on the ice then army crawl until it’s safe enough stand. Anyways, that sound is terrifying.
Awwwww, that old familiar sound. Pretty much grew up and lived on or near water in northern Vt. until I moved to the desert at 35. I started skating on the pond near the house when I was 7 or 8 probably and then skated, drove snowmobiles, cars and trucks on the lakes and rivers that were all around us. I've heard ice making sounds that do sound scary as F. I've never been completely submerged in frozen water but I am quite familiar with going through the ice to various degrees. I vividly remember walking home from the pond with either 1 or both skates still on because I'd be completely frozen from the knee down after going through the ice near the edge to chase down a puck. My laces (my whole skate and foot too) would be so frozen I'd have to sit in front the electric heater in the kitchen with heat and fan cranked to high until they thawed out enough to unlace them 🥶🥶.

Believe it or not that sound is actually making ice. It happened when ice is super thick.

This is normal it’s the ice expanding basically getting bigger not cracking
Noisy ice is safe ice
Believe it or not that’s actually a good noise to hear… means the ice is thick!
Good sign, the ice is growing.
The ice cracks below from stress the. Water fills the crack and freezes almost immediately
