Why I will always be a Rangers fan – feel good story before game 6

My brother, Jacob, passed away in 2015. He was an amazing person, and absolutely loved sports and was the type of guy who could list off stats, records, and scores without hesitation. His best friend is a huge Caps fan, so naturally, when their teams played each other, there was a bet around whoever lost had to buy the winner a jersey. My brother ended up winning the bet, so Caps Fan bought him a Rick Nash jersey (his favorite player). Also, we are from South Carolina, so I have no idea how/why Jacob landed on The Rangers as his team.

Fast forward to 2015, Jacob unfortunately passed away at 26 and 6 months away from Caps Fan’s wedding (he was the best man). While back home, my mom asks Caps Fan if there is anything he wants that my brother owned. He said he wanted the jersey he bought him after losing that bet. My mom said of course, and that she’ll get it to him when she finds it.

I consider Caps Fan another older brother and he always looked at me as the little brother he never had. So he asked me to be the best man at his wedding in my brother’s place. After hearing that Caps Fan wanted the jersey he bought Jacob, I asked my mom to tell Caps Fan that she was struggling to find it because I had another idea.

I just started a career in tech sales, so I had access a tool to get emails/phone numbers for businesses. I got to work cold calling, emailing, and sending out LinkedIn messages to the Rangers organization and Madison Square Garden, sharing the story and asking if it would be possible to get Rick Nash to sign the jersey. Eventually, my sales skills paid off and I got in touch with someone who said she could make it happen.

Not only did MSG pay for the shipping, they also sent a signed puck as well! I was amazed. Still am to this day.

Fast forward to the wedding and I pulled Caps Fan aside the day before and gave him the jersey wrapped up like a Christmas present. I made sure to print off the email threads from MSG and put them on top so he could see what went into it. To this day it was one of the best memories I have.

Idk what my brother would have loved more, the fact that Rick Nash signed HIS jersey or that Caps Fan proudly displays a Rangers jersey in his man cave! I ended up keeping the puck and Caps Fan and I both got frames for the jersey/puck with Jacob’s favorite phrase, “fuck you, pay me”. This is why I will forever be a Rangers fan.

To the Carolina Hurricanes, I have one thing to say;
FUCK YOU PAY ME! RANGERS IN 6!

    People can say what they want about the overall lack of Cup success, but the Rangers org haa always been first class.

    If we win tonight, “Fuck You, Pay Me” is the new slogan for the rest of playoffs

    As a longtime fan of Big Dick Rick, I love this story.

    I loved him on the Rangers but I am selfishly happy he retired in Columbus because I hope to randomly run into him one day on the street.

    Amazing story! Love that you were able to get that done in time for the wedding and that MSG cared to help facilitate. Hopefully they win it tonight for Jacob!
