Bruins legend Jay Miller questions if the Boston Bruins have enough toughness || Greg Hill Show

and we want to thank everybody for showing up this morning showing up last night uh and it’s time for our Miller mystery uh local Legend although the problem I’m realizing is I noticed it too on the way in if you get a real legit local Legend everybody knows who the local Legend is correct so we really can’t do the guessing who the local Legend is no I don’t think so maybe I can just introduce uh one of the all time toughest guys ever to play in the NHL the great Jay Miller can we have a round of applause Jay I am not a local Legend uh anybody can come and see me as you know up the street I’m always around well they don’t call me a local Legend at all uh I just uh mayor of Mayor of Mayor of fouth Mayor of katut do they ever they ever say that may mayor of my my houseold May that’s about it my wife and three children well we’re delighted that you came by this morning we’ve known each other 40 years probably one of the great things about this job is you can grow up as a as a Bruins fan and then eventually somehow you get to meet the the the people that you idolized as a kid and that is you J Miller so thank you I think it’s been great being friends for yeah we’ve gone back a long time to Larry Foundation uh We’ve um I’m trying to tell you 40 years you were just a little whip a snpp on I was yes I was I two I was two but I was a whip a snap on the side I was a fourth line left Winger for the Boston Bruins when I first met well I was telling shye cuz uh shye was not alive uh that your uh that one of your one of your big jobs was to protect Wayne Gretzky yes uh back when fighting was allowed in the NHL do you remember that uh I was very fortunate enough to be traded um uh he wanted me to protect him Marty molley said I’m done here’s the keys to the car so I went there and uh she it was one of a kind I uh I had so much fun out there but I would rather stay in Boston and protect Ray and the the team but you know what it happens it’s a job um and that’s Mike mil will tell you more he was uh playing with me when I got traded so who was who is the toughest your entire career you know that’s the stupidest question I’ve ever heard well that’s what I I hear that question that’s what I’m here for every day they were all they were all tough fear was my biggest asset but they were all tough I mean I was in Philly doing the Philly fights about a month ago they do a Friday night Philly fights at the at their right there I don’t know the Wells Fargo and bruy day Brown on the whole thing and they all tell me I I was but I look at it this way I did my job um I never looked at myself as a tough guy I don’t look at myself down here as a hero of Falmouth I look at myself as a good dad uh a businessman and I did what I could to make a living uh I never knew I was going to be there I never knew uh I was going to play that long you know 490 games or whatever and protect way and gret so at the time um I just did I didn’t want to uh hurt the 18 guys who were behind me I really didn’t yeah uh if you read the book tough guys uh just came out with Dale Arnold it shows the inside uh you know how what I went through um every day and every night you know pregame skates pregame warm-up you know I I didn’t have very good sleeps um I go to the Spectrum The Forum the you name the 18 20,000 people and I never want to let down my buds you know my guys who are next to me so you don’t want to lose a fight I I tried not to um you don’t you don’t last long in the NHL losing a fight uh it was funny Luke Roba Ty gretz and we were all sitting around at the allstar game down in Florida a couple years ago and the gretz goes Jay you’re the only one that never could take a night off the tough guys yeah we could have not uh gretz didn’t have too many nights off but Luke couldn’t score a goal had him assist nobody cared yeah but when Jay Miller didn’t show up for a fight that’s a night off wigs you know what it’s like it’s it’s one of those things that you never you have to perform or they get rid of it because there some there’s some Farm Boy from uh Saskatchewan or Ottawa or Vancouver that’s going to take your job yeah and I didn’t want to lose the job well what you know I think that’s like the the to try to go into the mind of what that’s like for a guy who has you know in the world that I come from a specific role in I came the same world you did yeah yeah I’m ni and you we didn’t know we were going to play any no I had no idea I didn’t stopped playing football till I got to high school but honestly growing up in East Wiggy didn’t know where NAIC was I knew ni I knew that was I knew where na was cuz that’s where Doug fluty was from oh no my mother does that all the time don’t go there it’s not Jay Miller’s Town my mother keeps yeah but what what was that mindset like like when you think about like your your your job your role was to go out night in night out and protect you know arguably one of the the greatest the greatest hockey player to ever lace up a pair of skates what what’s that mind I’m going tell you though that Ray Bor was just as close I was going to I was going to ask you about that Ray B was just as close I didn’t play with Bobby so I can’t say I was going to say Bobby or so will there be will there be somebody will there ever be somebody better oh God yeah I mean look at golf look at it it is is what it is Conor mcdavid’s pretty good yeah but Wiggy yeah um it was it was a role that uh I I was kind of put into uh in the miners from a guy named Rick Lee from hardford I was uh one point off All-American with Andy Brickley was my roommate and he got the All-American at UNH my senior year a junior year and it was really strange that uh when I went to the miners I was I went home to Falmouth and and retired and I got called back up and but our role was something uh specific like yours was we we had a job to do um they needed us that 88 team that I played on and the 2011 team was built the same way like your teams you know you had your role players and Tom Brady and and uh the coach made sure everybody did their role do your job and you do wonderful everything comes out like that right and is that what’s missing what what what what do you think about this team now where they are it’s fun we talked about this last night Greg I talked to C the other day and we don’t talk hockey but it’s funny I said I I don’t want to say this in a bad way but if we had Milan Luchi out there we had a couple other Rough and Tumble guys um we might have had a chance but I don’t pat maroon wasn’t wasn’t getting it done for you well Florida knew that Florida knew you know we you study tapes all these coaches study tapes for days on end no the the rough stuff I’m talking about every scrum in front of the net getting cross check I’m take some heads off off take a couple penalties early yeah right but make make make them make him look behind him that’s what my role was when somebody even T even went near nobody went near grits anyway or Ray they passano I’m not a hockey fan by the way I I I I I go once in a while but I don’t study it past $80 million in going to the coach and ask him if I could punch a guy could you imagine if he broke his hand what is that and like I said I was talking to cam the other day and we don’t talk hockey but I said $80 million he’s more money they we’ll ever make and whatever and uh you let them go out there and punch the guy doesn’t make sense to me especially kach Chuck yeah you know he’s going to take it but anyway but you you said you you know you always had to work every night you had to always show up the Bruins didn’t show up for playoff games this year it was staggering they had the game against the Toronto where they had one shot in the whole period I don’t mean to be I’m like I said I’m not a huge I don’t follow every game regular season mean jack [ __ ] excuse my language you don’t get any President’s Cup what you make another 20 grand on your bonus these guys are making seven two eight n whatever the regular season it’s when you put that puck down in the playoffs when you make the playoffs as youbody knows and watches the playoffs it’s a whole another level it’s a it’s awesome to watch I watch every playoff game I could watch one a month during the season it’s a just the intensity the Rivalry that and forget about rivales Montreal against Boston get trying to get into those playoffs that was it’s different so I say let’s concentrate onget about the regular season getting the playoffs unless kick some ass in the in the play who cares how you finish the regular season as long as you’re you’re going to make the play home my advantage though to the Jacobs I don’t know is this being recorded yeah the Jacobs want the you know it’s a revenue yes it is yes they want money they got what they five six seven I don’t even know how many home games yeah yeah they want the revenue um what do you make of the goalie rotation that I don’t know but I know Swan played out of his butt yeah and uh I would sign that guy as far as I could I don’t care you don’t have a luck streak like this this wasn’t a luck streak you know a couple game this was a unbelievable kid that’s playing well he wants you know he wants like 8 million a year done sign him I heard we were talking about this yesterday with Andy Brickley in my golf tour the other and uh Bob Beers we were talking about that exactly um that uh some of the top goalies are making 10 I said 8 million sign him I mean that seems like a barget right now yeah I mean uh you get three years out of you know it it’s you know so and he’s only 25 years old the the one thing that J I want to ask you about that I I find as a player that was in a similar a position where it’s like you know you’re always looking over your shoulder because somebody can replace you if you don’t do your job but you also get to a point where you say I can do more did you ever have to like deal with that as a player like I could be more than just a fighter because you brought up the fact that you were one point off of being an All-American so clearly you have the skill to do other things did you ever have that in your mindset like I could do absolutely not no no I was the highest paid per shift player in the history of the game I played 2 minutes a game three minutes a game when I went to LA I played it was funny I was talking to Bernie Nichols a couple months ago he goes uh he had 70 goals and he says you sh assisted on six of them when gret traded for me I played 20 minutes a game I didn’t want to play 20 minutes I was exhausted you no matter how good shape I was but no seriously we I had a rooll I didn’t want to get out of that role the fourth line left wing protect the guys growl at them whatever when Terry you know I never nobody ever tapped me on the shoulder and said go out there and get the guy I knew my job and I think that’s why to this day I played such a long career because I didn’t know I was going to play that long 480 games in the NHL is a long time I mean the average is two 160 so yeah I’m very happy with it Bruins did a really good job I think with the Centennial Celebration I I know you were you enjoyed awesome yeah seeing all the mates yeah oh the 100 I was invited the 100 I gret Wayne Uh cam called me and says you’re invited he said you’re 101 oh you weren’t on top 100 player you were number 101 no but I was a 30 I was only 30 guys on the ice and I was one of them so go figure I think was I think it was voted by the uh the F uh the um writers because I’m not very very good to the writers you know I always stuck up for my teammates then too yeah but yeah then the 88 team was was was fantastic we had a ball up there I I can’t wait to do it again in a 100 years I I I’m just fascinated about grety and you said Bor so both what was it about those guys that separated them outside of the obvious inherit they they helped me yeah both of them helped me both of them spent time with me I mean Ray is one of my dear friends gret I still see him down so Wayne was a whole different breed there’s not I hate to say this Ray ways was one of the best players that ever lived but gretz had his own way around he had eyes behind his head when I tell you he had eyes behind his head I first get to Washington Capitals I’m playing with Bernie Nichols 70 goal scorer Hall going to be Hall of Famer and gretz on the left side I’m taking over Dave seo’s job and he said just stand there in front of the net I’m going to get it off your ass kid 14 goals later in the season like wow three of them went off my ass off my ankles you know he he didn’t need protection same with uh Ray he didn’t need protection he this was a uh I swear to God uh fighting was a kind of a I think it was a theater theatrical you know and they nothing was faked nothing I wanted to kill these guys they wanted to kill me so um but then when it was over you guys were were you friendly afterwards some uh this came up uh I don’t know a couple years ago that Chris NY and myself hang people in Falmouth here my my my friends here that come to my restaurant um know Christen Island because we met here at the Shark Tournament I invited him on my boat over in Oak Bluff Knuckles but I never knew him personally before outside of hockey Dave Brown I just met two years ago after 35 years being retired so no I never hung around with him I didn’t want to hang around with them that was my job I wanted to kill him yeah I love it I love it yeah um he’s such a nice guy though you know uh Chris NY met them it’s like they’re all nice like Patriots you’re all good guys right but you you meet these guys and you know you meet guys that you kind of like you’ve seen on television and in the 80s and did you have a TV in E uh we did we used to go to Christy’s Pizza matter of fact on the it was on the corner of Bennington and Maran Street we used to go to Christy’s Pizza and we’d watch you know obviously the Bruins games and we were you know so because those were the big bad Bruins right that’s why I said you guys the fans changed now they’re all soft well all he’s all over me because the Bruins they get they get bumped in the second round and a day and a half later they’re all on a on a jet going somewhere rolling dice uh in the middle of the aisle and having some Beverages and I’m not mad about that like they just want to Stanley wgg’s upset about that cuz he thinks they should what do you what do you think you should go home and work out no but you you don’t get on you don’t get on a plane not even a day after you lose it and it looks like you want a Stanley Cup I mean have some emotion we’re sitting here critic what are they supposed to do you get it should hurt you I’m I’m sure it always hurts every time I lost two stealing Cup finals I didn’t go home and cry going at beverage and gone on a bicycle I didn’t have enough money for a a I lost the Super Bowl and it hurt I wasn’t sure it hurts but nothing can do about it move on oh well I mean give us some time at least I mean we invest all this time into watching you put all the Blood Sweat and Tears and then we’re sitting here you know crying holding that you know our grandparents are rolling over in their grave because they just want to see a team win wow wigs I mean and next thing you know they’re they’re over there you have too much Tom Brady in you yeah well my God it’s just yes and that’s what we’re playing with I had I had it with B but it’s it is what it is I mean I don’t know if it was the next day they did this by the way it was a day it was a day it was the day a couple days after was posted on uh couple days yes it was posted what Sunday night they lost they lost Friday night and then they were on a jet I think they posted it Monday yeah so you know what the grieving period was over for them very quickly yeah didn’t look like it was too hard trust me These Guys these guys fought I mean they fought tooth and nail there they they did as good they can uh thank God for sing though yeah thank God for sing all right you are you’re our local Legend can we have a round of applause for Jay Miller thanks for having us last night we had some great pizza Courtyard thank you where is that place it’s I think it’s in katat the courtyard good you’re right it’s in katat all right all these people out here flying Bridges funny they said they’re going to bring a guy in that owns a bar that’s competing against them I don’t compete against somebody that has a water view uh slips they’ve done a great long they’ve done a great job I just want to say this is unbelievable because I had my 30th birthday party here with the whole Bruins team yeah when they had the Gazebo outside and they only had like six slips yeah this place is unbelievable I am so happy to be here and thank you for the inv I think you had your 30th birthday you had the Glenn Miller Orchestra play live here you’re just my age so don’t I’m not you’re older than me okay you’re much older than me we had fun that’s why Greg’s extending this we had a lot of fun but I’m 1. We need more slack in the rules to allow players who can , defend the others when refs turn a blind eye . Obviously refs can miss calls and ( Let them play ) , but when it’s time let them police themselves a bit too . NOT Ol’time hockey , but keeping them honest .
