As much as I love Silovs and what he did stepping in, we absolutely lost a major part of the team when Demko went down. The team plays with more confidence and generate more offense when Demko is in net. Silov gave us a chance to win every game, but Demko would outright win us a game if it comes down to it.
I have had a ton of arguments with casual fans who only watches the playoffs about this. They all said “Silovs made some big saves”, “Goaltending isn’t the reason we lost game 7” or my favourite line of “Demko gets injured a lot, maybe we should trade him for some offense and have Silovs as starter next season.”
My counter argument to those people would be, what if one of McDavid is out and they have to play Draisaitl as 1C and Nugent Hopkins as 2C, and the Canucks won the last game by the score of 4-3, RNG has 2 points in the loss. And would anyone said “well the Oilers scored 3 goals and clearly offense isn’t the problem?”
They are people that haven’t watched the Canucks play this season. They don’t understand how much better the team plays overall with Demko in net. They can’t compensate the idea that having an elite Vezina calibre goalie in net is a difference of winning/losing a series. For example, if the Rangers didn’t have Shersterikin in net and have to play their third stringer against the Hurricanes, there is no way they would advance past the second round.
The margin of winning and losing is so slim that with the amount of games decided by a single goal, a Vezina calibre goalie makes the world of a difference.
I will die on the hill that if Demko is in net and given how shaky Skinner was early in the series, we could have won 3 of the first 4 games and end the series in 5.
Rest up Demmer, come back healthy next season and we are ready to take that next step with you.

Notice he said “We’ll”. That must mean Lindholm, Zadorov, Joshua, and Hronek all signed team friendly deals. It’s the only explanation.
