After weeks of uncertainty, we now know the future of the Tucson Roadrunners.

The Tucson Roadrunners announced they will be staying in the Old Pueblo.

“The Roadrunners staying here is a win for the region and great news for Arizona hockey,” said Fletcher McCusker, Chairman, Rio Nuevo District. “Tucson is to Phoenix as Austin is to Dallas, a professional sports super region. We want Tucson to be the AHL piece of that kind of partnership.”

Rio Nuevo Vice Chairman Edmund Marquez told News 4 Tucson the Roadrunners will play at least 30 home games in Tucson and up to six games up at Mullet Arena in Tempe.

  1. how about Utah upgrading the Utah Grizzlies from the ECHL to the AHL. The Colorado Avalanche promoted the Colorado Eagles from the ECHL to The AHL so it has been done before

  2. Swapping the minor league team where the major market team was? I remember when Manchester (AHL) and Ontario (ECHL) swapped leagues, and how quickly the new Manchester (ECHL) club was no longer in existence, and these are both minor league franchises.

  3. This is GREAT NEWS! The residents of Tucson love the Roadrunners! My wife and I enjoying to Tucson a couple times a year. Just another reason to get outta Glendale, if just for a few days a month. We'll get down there for sure. The Roadrunners can't replace the Coyotes; I don't think they will. The down side continues to be Alex Meruelo! If the NHL/ AHL wants hockey to grow and flurish, GET RID OF MERUELO!

  4. The NHL is such an embarrassing league. Its like they do everything they can to get as few fans as possible.

  5. The Milwaukee Admirals have been the Nashville Predators' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate since Nashville's inaugural season in 1998-99.

  6. thank god con man and fraud meruelo was not able to strip tucson hockey fans of their roadrunners ,hey brodie ,, you basically state that there is no hockey in phoenix .why did you not mention we hockey fans in tempe and phoenix metro area have our NCAA DIVISION 1 ASU sun devils hockey team ,who play hard are fun to watch and we suppport ?! C'MON MAN !

  7. I thought from the beginning of this saga that the Grizzlies would get moved to Phoenix – temporarlly – and then there would be an affilation swap somewhere down the line, once the Coyotes got back up and running. In any case, at least in this case, two wrongs don't make a right. Meruelo has enough problems without having two Schrödinger's cats on his hands. Let the current situation ride, win the auction, and go full steam after that. The Roadrunners will be fine in Tucson…The Grizzlies need to find a long-term home though. The… 😒…Yeti(s)… 😖…will suck all of the air out of the Salt Lake market. They have to. St. George?… 🤔…Who knows where those guys will end up…

  8. Six games for one season isn't horrible. And, if Meurulo gets the land, he can get some agreements to keep Tuscon as his future NHL franchise's affiliate. Heck, as was mentioned downstream, the Admirals had free agents in the 1997-98 IHL season that were property of the Predators.

(EDIT: The AHL currently plays a 72-game schedule, with 36 home games. That would mean that the Roadrunners could play possibly three weekend two-game series in Tempe, or six random weeknight games at the Mullet.)

  9. Brodie said don't replace the major league team with a minor league team. It might flop and turn off the market to a replacement major league team. So the Ballers shouldn't replace the Athletics?

  10. haha did anyone seriously think phx. would support ahl hockey let alone with the team owned by crook merulo? If you believe that shit you are full of it.

  11. Efff the Meruelos. Please, NHL, tell me you're not stupid enough to let that family own again….
