I was just 5 years old when the Panthers first started. My dad grew up playing hockey in Rhode Island as a kid before he eventually moved to South Florida. He was so stoked to have a local team to cheer for and take his kids (my sister and I) to the games.
At one point he got a job as a bar tender in the arena when they moved to Sunrise and would sneak my sister and I in with him on an ocassion or two to “check his schedule” and we’d get to sit and watch the game because back then the arena was hardly sold out.
Hockey is the one big thing my dad and I connect with. To see OUR team come so far and be so fucking good these last two years has been such a delight. Especially with me living all the way out on the west coast. We text and call each other and share in all the joy (and ocassional sorrow) the Panthers give us. To see all the fans they have gained, all the people they have brought together over the years, words can’t properly describe the feeling it brings.
I can’t wait to share all the excitement and drama of another Stanely Cup final with my dad!!
