[The CBJ Center] As first discovered by mark_scheig , Frank Seravelli on DFO Live lists CBJ as one of the teams he’s watching to potentially acquire Martin Necas. Vancouver and Calgary were the other teams listed. Seravelli also says he wouldn’t be shocked if a trade happened by Saturday.

Not sure how good Seravelli is but this would be cool

All things considered, I’d assume Don has a pretty solid idea of what Necas is, what he could be, and any underlying issues anyone other than Carolina would be aware about…

I would be very interested to see what Don’s got cooking

I like Necas, but I do *not* want to overpay for him.

He’s had one 70 point season, which is good for sure, but every other season has been around 50 points iirc. That’s not bad, but it is something I’d worry about because people usually don’t come here and do better right off the bat.

I mean yea of course people will manufacture rumors since we got Waddell. Doubt it happens they need their GM in place before making any moves

Former 1st round draft pick who scored 70+ goals on a 2 year prove it contract. He just turned 25 and is gonna want a payday to carry him through his prime. Easily he could cost $7m.

I don’t see how we could possibly afford him with just $23m in cap space and pending RFAs in Sillinger, Chinakhov, Marchenko, Nylander, Johnson, Texier, and Bean. The following year we have Voronkov as an RFA. It’s only after those 2 years that Laine’s contact is up so no major relief in sight. I assume Silly, Chinny, Marchenko, and Nylander are locks for contracts and at $4.5m average AAV amongst that group that’s $18m. I personally would like to move Johnson but assuming he wants him signed we could use up all the cap space just on those signings.

Buying out Elvis (something Waddell has hinted he’s not interested in) would save around $4m for a couple of years which still doesn’t cover Necas. Maybe trade Provorov to Carolina to help offset the upcoming departure of Burns for Necas?

My real question is why would Carolina trade away their best pending RFA when they have $26m in projected cap space, Burns coming off the books after next season, and their core is still signed through next year? They also have all their draft picks this year and a 1st and 2nd next year. Seems like the only reason the Jackets are included is because Waddell is here. Otherwise a team that came in dead last in the conference would not be connected to adding immediate and expensive firepower.

  7. If this complicates us keeping our core of RFAs, I’d be skeptical, but if Waddell can maneuver some contracts via trade or buyout, have at it.

I’ve always liked Necas but I just don’t know if he’s worth the asking price both in return and contract.
