Ireland just in time the hockey world has ascended on Buffalo for the scouting combine at Harbor Center we are within a month from the NHL draft there are rumors about the Sabers pertaining to trades in the NHL draft we’ll get to what has been said the philosophy of trading the first round pick and what the Sabers could get I’ve got four different forwards that all make sense for trades that would involve the Sabers first round pick should they make a deal all of that is coming up a little bit later on on today’s show I’m glad to be back nothing happened right I said I my phone on me that was it no I had an iPad no laptop if any massive news had the Sabers traded for Brady kachuck I would have chimed in in some way somehow but we didn’t get anything as expected nothing big of the sorts no movement really at all in the NHL the playoffs of course continued on and the Panthers back to the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row Edmonton makes it to the Stanley Cup Final mcdavid’s first appearance in the finals in his nine-year NHL career it’s been nine years now for McDavid you do get some of those hot takes once in a while from those I saw one from uh from the Miami area this week about how mcdavid’s an underachiever because his nickname is MC Jesus and it took him nine years to get to the finals but no anyone that watches the sport consistently knows he’s the best player in the world he’s going to go down I think is one of the top five players that’s ever played this sport I think he’s the best player I’ve ever seen in my life and I would contend that he’s right up there with Wayne Gretzky as the two best hockey players of all time uh little bit of a ways to go probably for him to really get into that territory but I think he’s on his way to that level of um of Legacy so McDavid in the finals is very cool the Oilers I still don’t think are a very well-built team but they’re better than they’ve been they’ve got a couple of nice defensemen they finally landed on a guy in Evan Bard they had been searching for the defenseman right they thought Darnell nurse was going to be a true number one he’s fine but he’s definitely not that they tried old man Duncan Keith at one point in time they land on buard Evan buard is a stud he is not that far back in the K Smite odds and I think he’s definitely uh going to going to be considered from here on one of the better defensemen in the NHL I think he is dynamite the goal tending finally held up for Edmonton that has always been a problem of theirs and Stuart Skinner who looked like he was starting to lose it in the second round got benched for Calvin peard gets back in played well against Dallas he’s the biggest wild card of this series but Browski on the other side he’s figured it out multiple strong playoff births in a row like four in a row for bosski in the postseason I don’t have a lot of concern about him Skinner is the one what version of steuart Skinner are we going to get because he has a CH he has the ability to sync the series on his own for Edmonton make it a quick four or five game series if they can’t get saves I expect Florida to get saves I have no clue if Edmonton Edmonton’s going to get saves they’ll need two to win but there’s a good chance I think that they don’t because they have a very Rocky Florida on the other hand the story for me about Florida I mean I think they’ve been the best team in hockey for a lot of this season they’ve certainly I think been the best team in the playoffs I can’t hate them I know like they’re in the sabers division but like come on Florida to Buffalo there’s not a Giant rivalry there and I know they are infuriating to watch right they bully you they’re the new Bruins I like to call them the new Bruins because they are going to kick you in the tee while they’re beating you 4 to one on the scoreboard they are going to bully you they are the modern version of Chara Maran and Lich they they have they are that kachuck is of course at the front of the line of that mentality but they are gonna fight you if they lose they’re going to fight you Florida is has that in them which makes them easy to hate I can’t hate them and the simple reason why for me I just respect too much how they’ve done it how they’ve built it and I think the kachuck trade a few years later is just one of the ballsiest trades that’s been made that I don’t think many GMS in the league would have made I think there’s a lot of cowardly GMS in the NHL that would not have made that Matthew kachuck trade Florida there’s a bills tie in here too if you’re a Bills fan um that you could figure out here along the way Florida got good with Jonathan hubero with barov with bosski with eblad they had a nice team they won the President’s trophy three years ago for the whole regular season they were the best team in hockey but then they got to the playoffs and in round two they got swept by Tampa so third year in a row they had made the playoffs but three years in a row they had not got past the second round and in backto back Seasons they got beat by their division rival they their biggest rival in the Tampa Bay Lightning there are a lot of sports franchises and sports teams most I would say more than 90% of them that would go through a run like that especially with the history Florida’s got which is basically nothing they went a decade plus not being relevant in the NHL at all the mo the most stories you saw nationally at the Florida Panthers were about whether they were going to move or not but then they get pretty good three straight playoffs but they go out in the second round a lot of teams would have just kept going like all right we’ll run it back we won the President’s trophy seems learning how to win in the playoffs right not what Florida did they did not sit on their hands and keep going the balls to take their alltime leading score at the time in Jonathan hubero off of a 115p point season and use him as the main piece of a trade to get Matthew kachuck from Calgary take the big swing your all-time leading scorer McKenzie weager who was on your top pair a first round pick on top of it more stuff like what a move what a trade and it has worked totally but the emotion attached to a deal like that not everybody would have done it Florida did and it’s worked for them and they currently have a team that is purely built from Trading and free agency and you hear a lot in the NHL oh that doesn’t work you can’t build your team that way well Florida’s done it and I think more and more in today’s NHL you can build your team like that and I like to see a team get rewarded for being aggressive being willing to overpay on trades being willing to take big swings say goodbye to people Florida does that and now they stand here in the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight year and do you want to know how many players on their entire roster that’s going to play in this series have been drafted by the team three three players there will be 20 guys dressed every night in this series for Florida and three of them were drafted by the Florida Panthers Anton uh I start the top barov Alex barov Anton londell aodc bled that’s it everybody else was traded for or signed they really hit big buying low on Gustav forsling who was a waiver claim and has suddenly become a legit top pair defenseman but I love the way Florida has built their roster I’d love to see the Sabers just take a little bit of a lesson from the way Florida’s done it which is not be afraid to make big trades not be afraid to say goodbyes to mean a lot to you huose number is going to go in there Rafters one day and they said goodbye to him after his best season they were right to do it age contract stuff and whatnot kachuck has completely turned that team around other moves have turned that team around a lot of former Sabers have turned that team around Sam Reinhardt not a kachuck level swing but a swing he had one year left on his deal Florida brought him in not knowing if he’d sign a contract or at least they didn’t sign one right away and they traded a great goalie Prospect in Devon Levi they traded a first round pick they went out and got Sam Reinhardt and Sam Reinhardt scored 50 goals this year and has been great for them in the postseason as well it is amazing to just look at how many former Sabers are on Florida they they have like the 2018 Sabers it’s like the Panthers they’ve got Reinhardt they’ve got Evan Rodriguez who is playing in the top six and has been very strong for them they have uh Brandon mour of course who has been a reliable top four defenseman they have aoso playing in the bottom of the lineup once in a while he’s a scratch sometimes kulakov is out there even I mean that’s a crazy amount of former Sabers on the other side by the way we have Vander Kane for Edmonton and seeing all these former Sabers it maybe I want to spend more time with this on a future episode but I dug this statup on all the success that some of the former Sabers have had in the postseason because it’s it’s like how how are they all getting success in the playoffs how is it all of them are going to other teams and doing well like were they really that talented they were here’s a stat that’s not going to make you feel great but it leads me to a different point that again maybe we’ll spend more time with another time Jack eel Sam Reinhardt Ryan O’Reilly a Vander Kane and Robin Leonard I picked those five players in part because that was the Tim Murray blueprint those five those five are going to lift me to success eel Reinhardt O’Reilly Kane Leonard the big Murray swings those five players since leaving the Buffalo Sabres have 134 playoff wins the Buffalo Sabers in their entire franchise history have 124 playoff wins crazy not even the point of bringing that up though the point I want to make and again we can expand on this in the future there’s an individual that I think is more responsible for the Sab playoff drought than any other player that’s Rasmus ristan because the only guy that has played more that played more minutes on the Sabers than eel Reinhardt O’Reilly Kane and Leonard the only saber that played more minutes than all of those guys during the the eel era was ristan and Stan did by a lot play more minutes he has not been to the playoffs he has zero of those 134 playoff wins he h is the only one that has gone to his next team and given them nothing Vegas is happy with eel Florida’s happy with Reinhardt and Montour and Rodriguez and probably to a lesser extent ofo even uh the blues obviously were thrilled with with O’Reilly the Oilers are happy with a Vander Kane and the Sharks for a Time we’re happy with Vander K till the off I stuff uh Vegas until the injuries we’re happy with Robin Leonard he was good enough to replace Mark Andre flurry every other one of these Sabers has gone elsewhere and those teams are happy with their guy Philly they I mean they would probably pay how much how much would they pay to get out of that wrist line and deal right now he’s the one guy that has not been good elsewhere and he’s the guy that played the most minutes on the Sabres during the eel era coincidence I don’t think so more on that though in a future episode we got a long offseason to get to when we come back some rumors about the Sabers trading their first round pick why it makes sense who they could get all ahead here in the lockdown Sabers podcast we are presented by game time game time makes getting NBA Finals tickets even faster and that shouting on ESPN or Fox Sports a free 247 sports streaming Channel locked on sports today available on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app so finals on Saturday got some time before there the Sabers and bual I should say hosting the NHL combine this week all the top prospects in town all the GMS all the teams coming to Buffalo all together no better time to talk with other GMS about trades so interestingly maybe not surprisingly here we are in combine week and couple of different tidbits Corey prman from the athletic in his mock draft yesterday puts in in the sabers column when he gets to their pick at number 11 that League sources have told him that the Sabers are open for business and trading their 11th overall pick later that day Elliot fredman from Sportsnet says the Sabers 11th pick is on the table as much as any other pick any other team is available so makes sense right the philosophy everything lines up the Sabres are on a 13-year playoff drought they already have the number one Prospect pool in the league they don’t need that they need to win right now they are acting like they want to win right now Lindy Ruff is out here talking about win now so naturally that team makes as much sense to trade their pick as any other team does 11 still somewhat valuable those later first round picks I think more and more as the years go on teams are realizing are not that valuable 11 not bad you could still get something of significance I don’t think you’re going to get a lot but you could get something for pick number 11 I think it is okay to just say flatly I’d be upset if they don’t trade pick 11 I don’t think you have to include the caveat of well if they find something that’s worth pick 11 then I want them to trade I don’t want them to trade pick 11 just to trade pick 11 I don’t think you need to include that in your opin op of whether they should trade the pick or not part of the reason why for me I just don’t think it’s that hard to find players that are worth the 11th overall pick or worth the 11th pick plus Prospect you know you package that in to some bigger deal or you trade it one for one like I I think you find a way if you’re motivated you find a bunch of different types of players available out there that are worth pick 11 pick 11 is not worth Brady kachuck straight up we’re not talking about a crazy asset I mean at the end of the day any team acquiring that asset knows I’m probably not getting that player unless there’s an anomaly like a Zack Benson I’m probably not getting that player in my lineup for two probably more three years is probably more like it um Isaac Rosine was a 14th overall pick of the Sabers a couple years ago he’s in 2020 uh three years ago he’s still not here so and he probably won’t be next year but we’ll see you just you gota wait so there are is a consequence of that that’s just not going to be as valuable of an asset so it makes sense for them to trade it I think because it’s not valuable as valuable as you might think it is the level of player you should be able to get like it’s not you know if you get a lower end second pair defenseman for pick 11 like I think that’s kind of fair value if you get a lower level top six forward for pick 11 I think that’s probably fair enough value I think the bigger issue at hand is not can you find a guy out there on the market that’s worth pick 11 or can you find a trade that makes sense for you that includes pick 11 I think what’s more tough or what’s harder is can you find in your current situation in this drought as one of the punchlines of the league can the sabes find players out there that have no trade protection can they find guys that have trade protection but would be willing to sign off on going to Buffalo that is probably the tougher part the Sabers could try all they want they could find that dance partner the GMS always tell you is so hard to find they could find that dance partner be willing to pay the price and still not get the deal done because of the player power involved in it and if that’s the case then you don’t get credit right you could figure it all out and if the guy tells you no well Kevin Adams doesn’t get credit for making that trade well we won’t remember that or we’ll mention it um so to me you can flatly say I’ll be disappointed if they don’t trade the first round pick I think they should trade the first round pick I don’t even think you need to include examples and I think you can say that and you could be right now there are examples I’ve got four forwards that I think all make sense and are all realistic for the Sabers to acquire that would include in a package the first that’s when we come back here in the lockdown Savers podcast we’re brought to you here on Sabers podcast okay I’ve got four names four players that I think to different degrees all would work all would make sense for the Sabers when it comes to uh when it comes to really who’s worth 11 who could you see actually accepting a trade to come here or who doesn’t have trade Protection Plus these are all guys that I’ve that I’ve seen in different media articles um or reports are on some level available this summer or are being speculated about in the trade wins starting with number one guy that we always talk about that I think is probably the most commonly mentioned um idea for the Sabers in a trade this Summer that is Mr Sam Bennett Sam Bennett will play in the finals for Florida one year left on his deal no trade protection whatsoever and Florida has Guy have guys to pay starting with Sam Reinhardt Anton londell as well they are I think going to trade Bennett to make room for other guys play EAD to down year or maybe do that now Bennett makes sense he makes a lot of sense to the Sabers 11 overall or Bennett straight up without knowing whether he would sign I think that’s a key here the Sabers and is no trade protection you might have to make that deal not knowing if he’ll stay I could defend doing that they might have to take a risk like that if they want this type of player if they want to swing big on hitting the perfect type of trade you might have to be willing to take on some risk and the risk in this one would be you might have to trade for Sam Bennett with the risk of it being a one-year deal and then you lose him for nothing and you’ve lost your 11th overall pick that’s a risk I might be willing to take it the risk because he’s the perfect type of player third line Center can score perfect defensively he’s got that attitude he’s got that physicality I don’t think there’s any player that makes better sense for third line Center than Sam pennett player number two that makes sense for the Sabers in a trade involving pick 11 pavl bevic of the St Louis Blues also expected to be available for trade this summer coming off a big year 63 points 27 goals for St Louis he has been a 63 or more Point guy all three years that he’s played for the St Louis Blues little bit older 29 years old he’s also in need of a contract one year left on his deal difference bich and these other guys he has some trade protection 12 team no Trad list something about though the Russian Factor the European Factor makes me think that some of those guys are more willing to just kind of go wherever uh I don’t know why I feel that way but bvic I feel like could the could be a guy the Sabers get their hands on the big risk for him would be are you willing to pay a 30-year-old on whatever contract that would be and two are you going to be able to get him to wave his no trade claws because I would bet the Sab probably on that list but I love the player he is tremendous offensively and as good defensively you’re talking both ends of the ice great player one of the more underrated players I think in the NHL I think he makes the Sabers a lot better right away like we’re talking maybe their best forward right away best let let me say best Winger best Winger right away if they were to to acquire him option three for a trade that would include pick 11 which neev by the way I think probably you got to give up more than just pick 11 you might have think of a prospect on this guy maybe you get for just Pi 11 and some throw Trevor zis two years left in his deal in Anaheim he’s got no trade protection whatsoever he is coming off a year of injury where he only played 31 games only had 15 points in those 31 games kind of fallen out of favor in Anaheim he’s a very one-dimensional player he’s great offensively he is very bad defensively he is a center now that’s key because if you want a third line Center I I kind of feel like this is replacing middle stat although I kind of think middle st’s a better player I think you’re doing your best to replace middle stat um by acquiring zet he’s flashy he’s got these highlight reel goals those are cool he’s a good offensive player even a very good offensive player but got a lot of work to do in his overall game become a dynamic player in the NHL but you could get him Anaheim seems to not like him as much as they did uh the no trade protection’s big as well I think he’s a very realistic idea for the Sabers finally option four in the trade market this guy like zrus by the way born in the state of New York born in the same city as Alex tuck Joel faraby from Syracuse Philadelphia Flyers forward in his fifth year last year had 22 goals a career high 50 points also a career high for Joel farby Joel farby he has got no trade protection again a big key when it comes to looking at different Sabers options he has had his name in the trade rumors in the last little bit Philly in a little bit of a rebuild this year look at the amount of picks that they’ve stockpiled two first round picks this year two first round picks next year two second round picks this year two second round picks next year they are stockpiling picks they got more late around picks in addition to all of that and faraby is someone that got into it with torella a little bit there was reports about him being unhappy with his role at the end of last season put on more of a third fourth checking line role by John tordella when baraby kind of like zerris not a very good defensive player he’s a ve he’s a good offensive contributor um I think he would be a middle six Winger for the Sabres and be a good one but you’re not expecting him to come in and be a shutdown player uh he’s not a center so you’re not asking to be third line Center he’s a left Winger so middle six left Winger Joel farby but I like the player I don’t know if he was a saber fan growing up like Alex tuck did but the Syracuse connection makes me think he’s getable and that’s a big part of who do you trade pick 11 for well you got to start with guys you think you could get and I think Joel farby local connection local enough at least maybe he even knows Alex talk from his time in Syracuse I’d imagine he does good player uh even if he’s not a perfect player but a good player contract control age works at only 24 years old uh not a perfect idea but I think a good idea and I would be into the idea of the sa trading pick 11 and like pick 11 and Roseanne probably what it would take get fair if not even a little bit more than that um I be open to that be very open to that because I like the player even if’s not so there you go Bennett levich zis and spab four names to keep eye on when it comes to the Sabers if they were to trade their first round pick which by a lot of different reporting it looks like they uh they very well might do all right that’s going to do it for us today here on the lockdown Savers podcast glad to be back we’ll be covering everything going on scouting combine really more about trade rumors and whatnot prospects will start to dive in a little bit closer to the NHL draft and free agency can’t wait for that we’ll start diving through some free agent options as well and on the Stanley Cup Final I want to expand on that ristal line intake by the way uh coming up I I just more and more feel like he is the guy to focus in on why the team wasn’t good when they had eel and Reinhardt O’Reilly and whatnot we don’t have to blavor that too much uh but just thought I’ve had recently talk to you next time here in the lockon saers podcast part of locked on podcast Network your team every day

The Sabres are rumored to be looking to trade their 11th pick in the first round of the NHL Draft. Who could they get? Sneaky Joe goes through possibilities like Joel Farabee, Pavel Buchnevich, Sam Bennett, and Trevor Zegras.

Plus, more former Sabres are headed to the Stanley Cup Final. Does it say anything about past Sabres teams?

  1. They should draft another undersized forward who never hits and won't see the NHL until they are 25

  2. Love the Sam Bennett trade idea!! . As far as Pavel Bushnevich trade idea goes , I say make the trade BIGGER and see if you can get Colton Parakyo in the trade as well as Power & Parakyo were a very good D pairing for Team Canada at last months World Championships.
ZERO interest in Zegras ! Lastly if im trading with Philly id go after a centre like Morgan Frost instead of Farabee.

  3. Just saying you want to trade a pick or player away without consideration of what youโ€™re getting in return is for sure a recipe for loosing. Also, if the sabres turn it around this year it might be the last time we pick in the top 11 in a long time.

  4. Iโ€™d take Pavel Buchnevich. But stay away from Mitch Marner and Trevor Zegras. And please donโ€™t trade Dylan Cozens after one bad season.

  5. Before you make trade for anyone please vette them well and make sure they fit culture and WANT to be in Buffalo. no more Hall or Staal etc.
