Toronto Maple Leafs latest rumour roundup on Mitch Marner and Jacob Markstrom, salary cap going up

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to be linked to top goaltenders on the trade market, while the team isn’t prepared to have Mitch Marner waive his no-trade clause just yet. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti give their thoughts on the latest rumour that the Leafs wouldn’t approach Marner to waive his no-movement clause unless they had an offer worth accepting. They also look into how the salary cap increase could impact the Leafs’ decision to trade Marner. Mike and Dave move on to another report about the team being a potential destination for Jacob Markstrom in the trade market, but would the Calgary Flames be willing to make a deal with Brad Treliving? They end the show by discussing the end of an era and the Florida Panthers taking Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

  1. Willie and Matthews took more than the entire cap raise. No relief for these guys until,Tavares gone (at least, at $11m)

  2. You'd have to be a real narcissist to think other GM's are going to be paying attention to leafs media coverage for news on the marner situation.

  3. Think Leafs will get a cheaper 1B goalie, with the hopes that Woll can stay healthy. That means guys like Talbot, Allen, Keumper (some salary retained), Blackwood etc. Those kind of guys. Focus has to be on upgrading the top 4 D. I'm pissed about the end of cap friendly. Why the Capitols are doing this is a total mystery to me, it's ridiculous.

  4. Dofus a real weak general manager caved in without any negotiation skills whatsoever that led to this disaster that has been run back year after year. That's exactly the definition of insanity trying the same thing again and again and expecting a different result this team was poorly constructed based on doofuses mental midget skilled Mickey mouse players that he started drafting and avoiding tough Canadian kids with size weight and drive. I realize these types of players are really hard to find and you really do come across one in the draft however we have to exceptions Nies and Cowan and Minten to a lesser degree. The new GM has made overtures that the defense needs to be overhauled and I hope that he stays with that mindset. We need to trade minor cancerous childlike afraid player just like Inga hammerstrom who valid said he could go into the corners with eggs and come out with none broken. A perfect analogy how minor is so fragile the way he plays in the playoffs when things get tough play if you can trade him and get a reasonable return we have created a lot of cat space to pursue the overhaul of our defense. Hopefully Woll can overcome his injury bug and invest in another goalie with some of the savings from Mariners contract. Just my thoughts on a die-hard Maple leaf who started watching them in 19 69 has our family moved to Canada in 1967 the last year they damn well won the Stanley cup Go leafs Go

  5. Marner may be an asset but if the Leafs don't extend him before trading him the Leafs will only get pennies on the dollar for him.

  6. Leafs are waiting for a great offer to go to talk to Marner? Marner has already said he is only playing out the rest of the year. Who is offering a haul for a year of Marner? A contender, presumably, but most of them are up against the cap. So I guess they could get him retained by a third party, with the majority of has salary paid, that should be cheap, but what would a team realistically offer? A mid player, a prospect. I just think when the Leafs finish the season, Marner is on the roster.

  7. If the Leafs didn't sign JT, would they have kept Hyman, Kadri? Marner on an expiring contract won't bring what you think, nor can many teams afford that hit this upcoming season. They have to retool their salary structure.

  8. Leafs will not get a fair deal for Marner cause it's the Leafs. The only positive the leafs have with Marner is letting him play out the year and have his and JT's money come off the books. No team will give what the Leafs want and need.

  9. To get a competitive advantage over the Leafs for the long term – other NHL teams best not trade with the Leafs next year. If the Leafs sign & keep Marner to another contract – that is the best outcome to weaken the Leafs for many more playoff disappointments. 😀

  10. The Moronto Media at it again. Pushed out Kadri, so he could win a Cup and now in the process doing the same with Marner. Only the Media would trade a Career +110 player who has scored the most points in the Playoffs, runs the #1 PP & PK, made it possible for Tavares’s career high 47 goals, and assisted on over 330 of Mathews 360+ goals. Meanwhile their #1 D man is a Career -9.

  11. Nylander deserved a raise I was ok with that. But if the Leafs keep Marner he doesn't deserve a raise unless he shows in the playoffs.

  12. A new piece of marner information is made up everyday** Simmonds doesn’t know crap, stop with this unsubstantiated garbage day after day please!!! If they don’t cite a credible source, perhaps don’t talk about it at all and come up with your own content?

  13. Markstrom, what a waste of assets. Hope the flames still hold a grudge because the leafs giving up a 1st round pick and other assets with Woll and Hildeby coming up is pure stupidity. If the leafs can't make a deal before the season starts with Marner maybe they should wait till the TDL. Let Mitch know their not bring him back and see if he will waive to a cup contender than he still gets to go to UFA market.

  14. It’s too bad the No-trade clauses everyone gets because there would be so many more trades happening and a handful of teams that would ‘not’ get approved by the player would be the highest bidders for him.
