The writers note that Seattle is not in a position where they need to free up cap space, but that the savings could make sense in the coming years. And with a rising cap, the retention slot is almost more problematic than the actual retained salary in the coming years.
Personally, even if they want to buy out Grubauer, I don't think it makes sense until they have to pay Joey. Still worth discussing though.

Question from a newish hockey fan here – would buying out Gru and adding Driedger to the Kraken be something worth looking at? Don’t just tell me I’m stupid, lol, explain the why or why not? Still learning here!

Driedgs has just 12 days left on his contract. I don’t see other teams wanting to trade for him if they can just wait and potentially sign him without giving up anyone.
